Are pitbulls dangerous?

Are pitbulls inherently dangerous and no amount of training can help them? When I see a pitbull, 9 times out of 10 it is not trained. It acts wild and angry. Every breed of dog can act angry and wild but I see an unreasonable amount of pitbulls that look like they can't be trained at all. I've also noticed that most breed of dogs serve some type of purpose to people. For example, one breed can be used by law enforcement and blind people while another breed may be more suitable as a pet. But what is the purpose of pitbulls? Ive never seen a handicapped person use one. Ive never seen any police use them. It just seems there is something very wrong with this breed.

Also, do you want to know why you've never seen a handicapped person using one as an AID dog? Because, due to stigma, you cannot get a Pitbull certified to be an Aid dog, regardless of the dog's temperament.

Thanks. I didn't know that. Its something I was always curious about because I see aid dogs all the time. The most common breed I see is the German shepherd

Pit bulls are terrific animals! But unfortunately people who shouldn't own them (inexperienced people) do, and that is why pit bulls have gotten such a bad rap. By nature pit bulls are not aggressive towards people, but because of their fighting history they can be aggressive towards other animals. I have a great website that I think you should check out if you are really curious about this: http://www.maricopa.gov/pets/pdf/pitbulls.pdf As for your question about pit bulls serving a purpose...I have a true story for you to share about a pit bull named Weela... "One day while outside watching one of the kids in her family, suddenly body slammed 11 yr old Gary that sent him flying. Lori (mom) saw the whole thing and was surprised since Weela had always played so well with the kids. Surprised , that was until she saw the big rattle snake sink it’s fangs into Weela’s face! Then she understood Weela had been saving Gary’s life! A few years later, Weela saved the lives of 30 people, 29 Dogs, 13 horses and 1 cat. Heavy rains caused a damn to break on the Tijuana River. Weela would pull 30 to 50lbs of food across the river to feed stranded animals when it was needed during their month of being stranded on the island." There are TONS of stories of heroic pit bulls! I think you might gains something from reading their stories :) http://www.understand-a-bull.com/Articles/HeroicPitties/HeroicPitties.htm

I have a pitbull/boxer mix and she is a sweetheart. But she does get aggressive when a stranger tries to touch her. I as a person wouldn't like a stranger to just come up to me and touch me. I have trained her the basics but I will get her another trainer so that she can learn more. I don't think that pitbulls are dangerous to have. They are very loyal, as can be seen by my dog, and they are very and I mean very protective towards their owners and family members. I think that if they are well trained they can be great dogs. But there are those people that don't train them and use them for dog fights and hit them. I've seen people mistreat their dogs and it truly disgusts me, because not only is it horrible but it does cause them to be aggresive towards people. I've actually never seen a handicapped person use one either or police. But I have seen police use boxers which is what I have. My dog actually looks more like a boxer than a pitbull but if you look closely she has the nose of a pitbull which is longer than a boxers. But in conclusion I don't really think there is anythin wrong with them. It's because of irresponsible people that they get a bad rap. Hope that helps.

I've heard from when I was little that if a human and a rottweiler were stranded on a island, the rottweiler would eat the human. But now that I'm older, I know a few rottweilers who are little scardy cats. There may be some dogs who tend to be more aggressive depending on their breeds like you have mentioned but I think mainly, the way they are brought up has a big factor on how dogs behave.

I don't think that pitbulls are vicious or dangerous by nature. Any animal can be dangerous if not tamed... but they are just dogs and can be trained. I have seen a lot of nice pitbulls that are beautiful and loving towards their own pups and children. But I have also seen pitbulls that are vicious and that fight... but they were raised that way. It's all in how you care for and train that dog.

I think they are dangerous animals. However, it is an animal and not thinking like us. They can always go crazy and eat something. Hopefully this thing will not we!

Most of the problem with pitbulls are not the dogs, but the people who own them and exploit them. I work as a veterinary technician and they are some of the best dogs you could own. I had a pitbull for many years and would love to get another. But they do take a lot of time, training and attention, as well as need a lot of activity to keep them happy. Of course there are going to be some dogs within every breed that should not be trusted, but most pitbulls are very loyal and trustworthy dogs. They just have such a stigma right now, it's hard to get people to look past that to see a nice dog as just that. People just assume that every pitbull is nasty or has been used for fighting and that's just not so.

pitbulls arent dangerous if you dont train them that way. Pitbulls are good companions and good with kids too. its just when you train them to go beserk they will. i have seen a little girl ride his pitbull like a horse and even if it looks that he is hurting a little bit he didnt get angry with the kid. i am just sad that they are being looked at as genetically dangerous dogs.

Nope, not at all. The people who sometimes have them, are though, which is incredibly sad and makes me really mad as well!
