Do you buy brand new or used items?

Recently, I had to help my daughter set up her own flat. For one thing, she is frugal and would rather buy from garage sales than go to the shops to buy brand new furniture. For two Saturdays, we managed to spend a little over $500 to furnish her flat by going to garage sales (moving out sale). This include a couch, sofa bed, bed, tall boy, bookshelves, desk etc., And mind you, the furniture were in good condition and almost new. It is simply amazing how much you can save by being resourceful.
If you like going to garage sales, what's your best find so far?

I really don't mind if its use as long as its usable. However if the price of a new item is close to the used item, i would prefer to buy the new item. But what your daughter did is simply amazing. To save that much in buying so much, i'm speechless.

Personally, I have never purchased second hand stuff. If it's electronics or furniture (with no cloth though), maybe I'd consider it but if it's clothes or anything with cloth in it, I might not be convinced to buy anything second hand. I mean, you don't know what kind of people you'll be getting your items from.

I'm a bit picky when it comes to clothing too. I'd rather save up for new rather than buy used ones.

my clothes are secondhand.90% of my clothes I got from secondhand stores.I actually like it,because I have unique finds with great quality that I got for low prices.I got branded items from secondhand clothing stores.I also like seeing secondhand furnitures.they have kind of a history with them.

I used to watch HGtv and there were lots of shows there showcasing home improvements or renovations. What i like about the show was that they are making used of flea market items where they buy stuff for a cheaper price and yet those stuff really were of remarkable value. Moreover, it seems look elegant when used to these newly renovated homes.
I don't go to the flea market or garage sales for my stuff since I don't have patience looking for items. But my sister and aunt do.And how mazing they can find a little of everything that we use in our house.. They look pretty amazing. Those are linens, curtains and even shoes.LOL

I do not mind, at all, and I think what your daughter did was amazing! Good for her! But sadly, there aren't really so many garage sales where I live so I do not have the chance to go very often. Otherwise I would be doing it much more than I do today!

Perhaps, you can start your own garage sale biz since there's a lack of that in your place.

I often buy brand-new but I do not mind buying second-hand especially for furnitures. For clothes, some second-hand are better than brand-new you just have to be patient.

My husband and I don't go to garage sales. We go to Goodwill and until recently we've gone to Salvation Army. We actually aren't going to necessaarily need furniture at first as we've been given a lot, but the past few weeks we've seen furniture for sale on the side of the road, it's in good condition factory direct I believe.
Though we are most likely to be given furniture when we do move out.

I think that there are alot of good things that you can get second hand there are good things like clothes, bikes, elecrtical things, etc.I have got loads of things from carboot sales,Ebay and out of the paper.I think that the things that i have got are less than half price, aswell as they all look new,so only i know that they are second hand.My best thing that i have got was a second hand pc that was under £70,as the person needed the money quick for their bills,so i helped them out by buying it and at the same time got a really good bargain.

there is nothing wrong with second hand stuff as long as it is in good condition,i love car boot sales and things like that, why pay more for something when you can get the same thing second hand at half the price

I love to shop for bargains. A lot of times this comes from buying used items. There are times when used is not what i want. There are just some things that I appreciate having brand new.

well i believe there is no problem as long as you have assessed the item carefully and proved that it is still usable. i do have my experience in buying used items that after a few times that i used the item just leave it to gather dust in the backyard because it got broken already.

We do not go to yard sales as much as we would like to just because many people have them early in the morning when we are busy with work and such. we do go to thrift stores such as good will. We also go on Craigslist.com where people sell things cheap, most just to get it out of their house. Another amazing site is freecycle where you put in your area code and it shows post of people giving away all free stuff, again basically just to get rid of it. You really do need to keep up with freecycle though, the best thing is just to leave it up and keep checking it, because the stuff goes quick (I mean of course its free (: ). You have to pick it up also, so you have to factor in gas and time but most the time it's worth it. Stuff like this makes finical situations a little bit better. Even if I did have really good money I still think I would shop and go on sites like those.

It depends on the situation and our ability. I am very good at choosing good items even though they are labelled as used one. With the ability to identify the quality and durability, you may cut corner some cash by buying used items. Try your luck and you will feel lucky!
But, if the price between new and used one is not separated so far, I will absolutely choose the new one.

Some people think that buying used goods is contrary to their status as being well to do ones. So the tale starts with their going for the brand new items.
Now we can not force them into such purchase for this is too personal choice.
Personally speaking I have not so far felt the need to buy others used thing save books.
When I was university student I would hunt the road side for second hand books and I had made a good collection of them. Now I earn myself but would not mind to visit the areas where used books are sold.
Great thing I feel this action.

wow...that's cool.actually i love saving money, and getting more value from what i spend.... just because the things they sell in a garage sale is used or second hand, it doesn't mean that all the things you find there lack quality...i think if you're a wise, practical buyer and you're good at choosing quality stuff, you can get the most out of your money when shopping in a garage sale..i love sales... i also buy brand new things in the mall but it really depends .... if it's something i cannot find in a cheaper alternative store and it's something that I need, and at the same time i can afford it, i go for it and buy it and bag it home...
i don't know what's my best find so far...i think all my finds are the best.

Hi there! Wow! that's very nice to know,I admire those people who really could get great value for their money like you and your daughter. For me, there's nothing wrong with buying second hand items especially when the items you will buy is really cheaper than buying something new. Here in the Philippines, there are huge items set of items that you could buy as second hand. Vehicles, furnitures from nearby Asian countries, clothings, electronics, gadgets etc. One time, I assisted my sister to buy cabinet for his young son's clothes. This time, we went to a store of Japanese surplus. I am so surprised to saw so many great finds there. There are lots of items that was really slightly used and you could assume that its almost brand new. I happened to buy cash vault then amounting to 1,500 pesos or $33 with a size like personal refrigerator. Until now, we're using it and it never changes its form, its like new to my eyes and the eyes of someone who managed to see it. I'll never stop searching for a cheaper items in garage sales for times really hard nowadays and any one will never go wrong if they learn to save their money for much more important things. Good night!

I seldom go to garage sales because my place here it is not our culture.Hopely we do have 2nd hands shop which sells used jeans shirts with is really real bargain and cheap and there is no visible mark that it is 2nd clothes or shoes.Personally i don buy 2nd hand stuffs because i buy cheap stuffs to wear and only buy high discounts stuffs like when it is 70% discount.

Sometimes when i have extra money i buy new things but if i have a limited amount then i also buy used items, but i would still check these used item if it will be usable and also will last for sometime when i will be using it. It will not bother me if i use new or used items as long as i can manage to wear or use it.
