Am I crazy???

Last night I had some friends visit and we decided to watch the movie "I am Legend" with Will Smith. As a rule I really enjoy Will Smith movies and as this was a combination horror and science fiction...also my favorite types of movies. We had been watching for about 20 minutes and so far it was pretty good and I especially liked Will's interaction with his dog. I went on the Internet to get a synopsis of the story and ...... I read what happens to the dog!! I said OMG NO! I can't watch any more. My friends thought I was kidding but I was very serious no way could I watch any more knowing what was going to happen to the dog. I told my friends they could watch it from their own home as it was showing again on Saturday night. Now I have 3 very pissed off friends who think I am crazy! I understand I was being rather inconsiderate but there was other good movies to watch. I am not ashamed that I care so much about animals but my friends said that my behaviour was not normal even although they know how much I care for my three dogs. Do you think I am crazy or not normal??

Hi. whiteheather39. I don't think that you are crazy at all. You just have your ways of not wanting to see what bad will happen. Many people are like this. If this dog was going to be hurt or killed in a harmful kind of way, then you don't want to know what the truth may be. If you don't want your friends to be angry with you, then just explain to them why you don't want to see what will happen to the dog. You have your reasons and no one should get upset because of it either.

I would not have enjoyed it because every time the dog appeared I would have cried just knowing what what going to happen. I should never have read the detailed synopsis.!!

I don't think you are crazy at all. I have seen the movie you speak of and you made the right decision. The dog was magnificent; very clever and very loyal. The first part of the movie depicts the bond between man and his dog and the two were partners in a big way. The bond was so strong and dog and man were connected at a deep level. It was devastating when he passed.

Thank you for understanding. I did watch the first part of the movie and saw just how deeply Will Smith and his dog bonded. When I read that Will Smith has to kill his dog when he realizes the dog is infected was too much for me.

I meant to also add that I received a huge shock when it happened and it took me a while to be able to watch the rest of the movie...thanks for BR.

No, you're not crazy. My son told me about the movie last year because he knows how I feel about things like that, I'm an animal lover. In fact, I can watch movies where adults die but I can't bear to even think about children or animals suffering or dying--adults have choices and defenses, children and animals don't. I prefer the original, "The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058700/. Watch that or read the novel 'I am Legend' by Richard Matheson, they are both very, very good! The 1964 movie was made in the days when people weren't so bloodthirsty, demanding that their entertainment be filled with gore, suffering and cruelty.

Like you it does not bother when or how adults die in movies but for children and animals I am a pushover. If I had watched the movies I would probably have embarrassed myself by sobbing and crying. Thank you for the tips I shall try both the book and the movie.

Since poring my last comment I have watched The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price. I had forgotten how must Vincent price gave me the creeps when I was you ....and he still spooked me. I did enjoy the movie and it was not gory at all. But I made up for that by watching " Bram Stokers Dracula" with Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins and it was one of the best Dracula movies I have even seen.

I have that ubersympathy for animals, too. Although I realize no harm is coming to these animals and that it's only a movie, a deeper nerve is touched with me seeing an animal get killed than a person get killed. I think a lot of people are like that. Why? That's a topic in itself. Maybe it's the whole "helpless" way we see an animal compared to another person. I don't know. HBO had a miniseries with Ed Harris a few years back, Empire Falls maybe? Something like that... anyway... I was more ticked off that this punk kid kicked his dog than I was ticked off that he become a legitimate murderer. Watching I am Legend and that scene was difficult for me, as I've had to put down two of my dogs before manually. But it's nothing that really sticks with me. In the moment I'm like "wow, that's f'd up," but after I don't have any lingering emotions about it. (Update as I'm thinking here near the end of what I originally wanted to say lol) Come to think of it, I have been really upset about a person getting whacked out on film before. In the final season of HBO's The Wire, I was a mess for weeks after they killed Omar. And he didn't even meet a fitting end. It was some little kid in the store! He didn't even get to anyone on his revenge list. If I would have known about that scene before watching, I wouldn't have watched. So I can't say you're crazy for boycotting I am Legend and its emotional dog-stranglin' scene.

The movie is on TV again tonight and by all accounts it is a really good movie so I will watch it and when I think the dog killing part is coming on I'll go into the other room. I watched the Vincent Price version and it was good but very obviously almost 50 years old.

no you are not crazy, your nature is just like kids. kids cant hide their emotion and same is with you. the biggest problem i think with you is that you are now kid no more. as i think your friends are becoming elder than you and their psychology is also changing, so are the one who is younger among your friend circle. so kindly ask your friends who gets rude on your nature. tell them clearly that you cant hide your emotions. ask them to take you as what you are. so this is my kind advise if you cant change your mentality. but i also recommend you to thing positively, like that was only a movie and its not a real thing. its just a story script. just horror and fiction movie and its not happening in reality. every thing is happening infront of the camera, directory and screen play crew. so think positively.

I haven't seen the movie but hear it's a good one You should have researched more and when you didn't you should have offered to somewhere and let your friends watch the movie and allow them to make their own assumptions. And, you know me, I'm a dog lover from start to finish,,, just others are not.

You're not crazy. Being sad over anything dying is very selfless and mature. Just because the dog is not human does not mean that she is not worthy of being loved just as much. You have the right not to watch something get slaughtered, fictional or not. I've seen the movie. It is very sad and I stopped watching it at that point.

I do not think that you are crazy, the only wrong thing was, you could not prioritize your feelings. Even if you love animals, it was just a movie and to be real, the dog which was in the movie is more popular than you and me. Think this way, being a dog that animal is sharing screen with Will Smith, which is next to impossible for so many of us. Instead of thinking logically, you indirectly asked your friends to leave your house, that was freaking. But do not worry about it, these things are common in friendship. I do not know what is your age, but yes, try to think logically at your level. It is very very good that you love your dogs but your friends are human. 99.99% normal people will prefer their good friends over their pet. Good friends are very important in your life. Still nothing is wrong. Call them and without any hesitation, ask them to come to your house and watch any other movie which you think they would love to watch and at the same time say sorry. I am sure everything will be alright. Do not think too much about this incidence, we are human and that is why we take wrong decisions.

I am 71 years of age and I can prioritize my feelings if I feel the necessity to do so under different circumstances. However at my age in my own home with friends who know that I am an ardent animal lover I would not expect them to be surprised at my reason for preferring to watch a different movie. I have a very logical way of thinking but in a relaxed home atmosphere I do not have to think particularly logically. In no way did I ask them directly or indirectly to leave my home. As they are also intelligent mature individuals they did not assume that I was requesting any such thing. I do not know how old you are as your age is not available on your profile but you appear to be very young when I read the following sentence..."Think this way, being a dog that animal is sharing screen with Will Smith, which is next to impossible for so many of us." Not a very intelligent way of thinking!

You're perfectly normal. This just shows how much you care about animals, specifically dogs, and how you don't want to witness any harm happening to them. They'd think you're crazy because they don't care to these dogs as much as you do, as for them they're 'only' pets.

No sweety, you are not crazy at all. I cant see anything or anybody being tortured. Its normal to react that way. Its just that some people are more passsionate about things than others. You guys couldve just switched the movie and watched another good movie.

All I could say is that you should try to draw the line between art and reality. Because it seems to me that you are taking things too seriously. You imagine things would happen to your three dogs, but you shouldn't. They are perfectly fine and safe with an owner as loving as you. But you should understand that a movie is just a movie. The directer, writer, the actors etc worked on a certain interpretation on what they believed could entertain the audience and get their message and intentions across the screen. And your reactions just means that they were successful to some degree.

ya i think your little over the top.Haha.Little only.I guess your can always walk away when that scene is appear. It is just a movie not require no over emotional about it.Being over obsessed with something someone or a subject is not good in long term.Imagine how will smith feel in the movie The legend is only companion is eaten alive by murdered by mindless zombies. He also will feel very bad.

You have nothing to be ashamed about. We all have our limits on what we can and can't watch. I have a pretty high tolerance so it is easy for me to watch very violent movies such as Martyrs, High Tension, and Hostel. I recently learned that I do have my limits though. I tried to watch The Human Centipede and I couldn't make it past 40 minutes. I was literally sickened by it.
