I know that in today's mad, mad world we can pick up ready made babies clothing (well any clothing if it comes to that)for far less than it costs to make your own. But I just love to see a baby in hand knitted clothes,I think they look so cute and I also think it makes them look really loved and cared for. I have been knitting like mad before the birth of my recent granddaughter, this picture is of her in a cardigan and mittens that I knit for her, she is 4 days old on this picture taken today. Do you still knit your own clothes or is it a dying craft?

Hiya chem, My Mom knitted me a couple of things for my first Son and I also knitted a couple of things too. I liked doing them and they fitted him well. One Day it was so wet and cold outside that I just had to put the baby blue coloured Coat I had knitted him on top of the Hearth that was around the Gasfire and try to dry it on there it got singed and I felt like crying after all the work I had put into it.

Hiya chem, Never thought about it like that as it did get singed by the heat off the Gas fire as I did´nt think that it would do that. But it´s better my Coat got singed than your Granddaughter getting harmed. That was a close one. If I had been your Daughter I would have gone beserk I surely would.

Yes, I think knitted clothes are the best, whether for babies or anyone! I knit a lot and know a lot of people who do. There are entire communities online for knitters, magazines published just for them and an entire industry caters to them. I think knitting is far from a dying craft. I love to see young people take it up. It usually surprises them when they find out they can create something all their own.

Well, you have a chance now with grandchildren! :) Also, as your daughters get older, they may take it up again. My oldest daughter started crocheting when she was in her mid 30s and really got interested in it. I never thought she'd do any needlework!

I find knitting boring, but then again, I don't do large projects with much interest, not cross stitch or needle point. If I can't see a lot of progress I'm ready to chuck it and do something else

I guess even a dozen rows doesn't do it for me, too much work for not enough reward... how long is she going to be able to wear that cute little outfit?

It will probably come as no surprise to you that I don't knit. Your question did prompt me to wonder how many people that I know do knit. I can only think of one: and I can't say that I've seen any evidence of her doing that for a year or so.

Yes it certainly does seem to be a dying art. At one times as soon as a pregnancy was announced all the females in the family (sorry if that sounds sexist!!) rushed to get out their knitting needles, but these days there are very few people who actually seem to be able to knit, perhaps the fact that the clothes can be bought so cheaply has put them off!

I don't knit my clothes, I crochet them! But to answer your question, unfortunately, I think both knitting and crocheting are dying arts. Though, if we made an effort to teach our children and/or grandchildren the craft maybe we could help to save it. Do you sew your own clothes as well? I try to sew as much as time allows, but it has gotten really expensive to do so.

I always did sew. When my three eldest girls were young I made all their clothes but it has just become too expensive now - you can buy them cheaper!

Hand knitted clothes are unique, unfortunately I don't know how to knit at all. My mom is good at it and she has knitted some clothes for my son. I really appreciate to it. I wish I could know how to knit. I love China

Hi! Hand knitted clothes are one of my favorites especially shirts, sweat shirts and coats.I just love wearing them during rainy season and Christmas time...and me too, I love to see babies and little girls wearing knitted clothes. When my daughter was still a baby, she had some knitted clothes...it wasn't a lot because knitted clothes here in our country are quite expensive. I also remember when I was still young I had some knitted clothes too and I really love wearing them. They really look so nice, dainty and elegant. :)
