Is it just me... or... are scary movies or movies that relate to the horror genre NOT SCARY??? They are more gruesome... maybe mind provoking... but certainly not "twitch in your seat/turn your head away" scary. There are a few new movies coming out that I want to check out. "My Soul to take" and "Let me in" but they seem to have pretty similar concepts. It's kind of sad for me to see horror movies take such a 360 degree turn because they are among my favorite types of movies. What do you guys think??

I don't think horror movies were ever scary. They can be creepy but never scary (at least if you're not under 15). Let Me In has 100% on rottentomatoes based on 12 early reviews so it looks very promising. It's the only movie I'm currently looking forward to but I doubt it will top the original. Let the Right One In was special

I think if you watch enough horror you become accustomed to them and it can be hard to find them scary anymore. I have seen a few that have disturbed me but not many that have had me genuinely scared. There is a trend of horror movies of late to be over reliant on gore or shock tactics with little or no story or atmosphere. I tend to think that less is sometimes more. I tend to like physiological horror a lot more than an all out gore fest. It will be interesting to see what they do with Let me in.

Perhaps you are right... maybe I have just seen SO MANY horror movies.. that I am immune. But, that's crazy lol and the film directors need to come a little harder than that! I agree with you when you say that less is sometimes more. I would rather see a great captivating plot that has me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out how it will unfold before it actually does.... than pools of blood everywhere and by the end of the movie... I don't understand the concept of it at all.

after watching "psycho" and couple of other really scary movies i pretty much gave up on this genre. but i love suspense movies. without suspense i don't think any movies could really draw my attention. i do agree the contemporary horror movies lack the psychological substance. most of them just rely too much on special effects. i think maybe modern life style doesn't support too much deep/twist psychological thinking style so there are really not many good stories come out to make great horror movies.
while ago a i watched a movie "dressed to kill" and i thought it was excellent, except it was a little scary to me, especially after i finished watching. i wanted to watch another movie by same director "raising cain" but i heard it was scarier than "dressed to kill", so i have not managed guts to watch.

I have never seen the movies 'Psycho' or 'Dressed to Kill' but you've peaked my interest and I will definitely be looking them up today. The last "scary" movie I watched was online and it's called 'Piranha'. It did frighten me a little bit even with its "corniness" because I am terrified of fish and sea creatures. But I will definitely be checking those movies out. I did also like 'Naina' which is the ORIGINAL version of 'The Eye'... Indian version.

"psycho" was by hitchcock, a suspense and horror movie. "dressed to kill" was by brian de palma. i saw a review called "dressed to kill" as "de palma's 'psycho'", it meant a real compliment, because "psycho" was such an immortal classical piece.

i'm not a complete fan or horror movies. but i have seen a few.
and i do have to agree. "horror" movies are not too scary anymore.
I found myself laughing out loud in "drag me to hell" i though it was pretty funny. but after about an hr it got a little bit creepy so i turned it off.
btw i was by myself watching it. lol.
but i do agree!

O wow.. lol I thought 'Drag me to hell' was funny, too... yet kind of crazy. That old lady was wicked... she knew some form of voodoo or something lol. I was like I don't think I would have double crossed somebody as sinister looking as her especially when I didn't have to... but smh. O well!!

Horror became more of a comedy genre a long time ago. Watching movies like The Exorcist, the original Nightmare On Elm Street, and the original Psycho would make your skin crawl. These days, there's no suspense, no nail biting reactions, and no having to look under the bed for monsters. You basically know what's going to happen from the beginning.

I think that you may be right. Freddy really creeps me out and in a way is soo much scarier than Jason. Why?? You may ask... because you HAVE to go to sleep sometimes... there is NO amount of medication or anything that you can do to not possibly go to sleep at some point... therefore he's eventually going to get you. In other movies... if the belief was strong enough, he could come OUT of the dreams.. or should I say nightmares. He really terrified me. Watching the Exorcism is a bit creepy too, especially when alone because exorcism is real. I think the creepiest part of that movie was when Reagan came down the steps on all fours on her back... because the look on her moom's face was one of utter terror and I probably would have ran out and left her because that's some scary ish to withness!!

I agree with you. They may be disturbing like SAW but that isn't scary. Its just disturbing. Movies no longer scare me the way they used to. Back then I get too scared to go to the bathroom. Now... Nothing... Either they've lost their touch or I've grown up. Maybe both.

I couldn't agree more. Saw is completely and utterly disturbing. It's crazy how people would sit and think of ways to torture others... that is mentally challenging. I think that I grew up a lot, too. I used to love scary movie manias that come on around Halloween time... I'd cut off all the lights... get a warm blanket and sit around watching them eating popcorn with my friends... afterwards we would be scared to do anything and wouldn't so much as even JOKE around about it lol. But now.... things are so much different.

There are so many different views on horror films. Some are just about blood and gore. Some are just about what can look gruesome and shocking. i still prefer the films that make you jump out of your seat or hide your hide. Horror films seemed to be a lot scarier in the past. Your version of scary is what counts the most when you watch a scary movie.

You are right about that. It does all depend on someone's "definition" of scary in order to be able to consider one movie scary over another. It takes a great deal to scare me now... it used to not. Some people are easily scared... but I'd hate to be like that!

You are definitely right. These movies they call horror movies are not that scary anymore. They will make you scream but that is not my idea of a scary movie. A scary movie to me is a movie that will make you feel scared even after watching the movie.

I don't even scream anymore.. and there are very few that will have me thinking about them afterwards or maybe thinking it could happen to me. I miss that uneasiness I felt.. it literally gave me a rush!!
