I think it depend to the smoker how long it will take before they can stop smoking because base on what I saw from my smoker friends. One of my friend stop smoking because her lung can't handle it anymore and it become hard for her to breathe and the other one takes months before stop smoking because she just stop it because she just want too. I really don't know long long it will take before lungs can recover from smoking but I heard that drinking milk is also good for lungs.

I suppose we can look at this like any form of addiction, it truly depends on the person. From a study I read one time it takes a full year of non-smoking to have the lungs to actually begin the healing process. I understood from the article that after five years of non-smoking you can preserve a good 15 years recupment to the lungs. This study was done at a hospital I use to work at.

I am a former smoker and it took me four or five unsuccessful tries before I finally quit on 2/9/05. It takes about a week to get overthe physical addiction to nicotine but the psychological attachment is always with you. I believe that it takes about a year for the lungs to recover.

As long as the person character remains slave to his bad habbit(smoking), he cannot quit smoking. The sooner the person become the master to his brain(thought to quit smoking), the sooner he recovers from any sort of lung problems.
