He "drives" his wheelchair to work everyday

Hello everyone,
It is monday morning for me now and a beautiful week stretches ahead of me. This morning I saw somebody in a wheelchair near my workplace. Occasionally I have seen this man "drove by" in his wheelchair, it is a high-powered one with automatic functions or something. Today I got close enough to him to read something on a poster that is at the back of the wheelchair.
It read, "Perhaps it is my sole purpose in life to serve as a warning to others".
Somehow this sentence touches me as I imagine maybe this wheelchair person is trying to teach us about determination and perseverance.
What do you think of this sentence? Have you met anyone or any event that touched you recently?

How sad that this person has to be in this condition. I have to say that just yesterday Saturday I learned something new here on myLot about a member who he and I and so many of us interact on a daily basis for several months. Yesterday he started a discussion about how we handle with blind people.
He uploaded a personal you tube video for us to view, along with pictures and an internet article to show to us that he is actually blind. I was so amazed by this information I learned as not in a million years could I have guessed. Apparently from the article it shows that he has special equipment that he uses to be able to work online.
This was an eye opener for me my friend as although so many of us on a daily basis have trials and issues we simply do not understand that they are truly not as much as the one you mentioned and this myLot member.

You have also told us an inspiring story, I wouldn't have imagined any of our mylotters like that. These are the people whom we can draw a lot of inspiration from and also learn about our own "disabilities", when we complained about the little things but we forgot that there are many others who did not even have the basic things.

If he is to serve as a warning to others, then perhaps he did something that was not suppose to be done that is why he is now stuck in a wheelchair. I think it is something that is connected to his past, maybe he got into an accident while driving drunk or driving to fast or something like that. I think it would be good to actually ask him what he meant by that statement. But I do admire his determination to continue on with his life despite of what happened to him

@ silver. I thought the same thing...driving drunk. And yes, he seems to be determined to get a message across to people and seems to also have a good attitude about instead of just wallowing in his misery. People like that and the other people I have also read about in this discussion should be an inspiration to all of us who have complained or moaned about trivial things in our lives.

That was also what I thought when I first read that, but it doesn't matter. I think I can learn something from him just by looking at his situation.

Only he and the friends around him will know it, unless I approach him and ask....it is a good guess but knowing what really happened is not so important as long as we can draw a lesson from it.

This is sad :( Yea for me, I've seen a video some time ago, which is about a 20 something year old man. He has no limbs and has difficulty going out. But, he somehow is successful in his career. I can't remember exactly but I know some bits here and there. He was giving a talk on determination. He was telling a story and then he demonstrated himself falling down. Well, people would say, how will he ever manage to climb back up, when he has no limbs? To your surprise, he managed to climb back up and he told the audience that, if I can do it, why can't you? His story has touched many of the people down there and around the world. After this talk, almost all the people cried and hugged him after this talk.

I have watched this video too, I was so touched that tears came into my eyes, especially the part when he picked himself up and the the students went to hug him. It is amazing that such a simple act like that can touch our hearts and inspire us.

I saw that video as well when someone posted it on mylot. It is a very inspirational video and I remember seeing many girls in the audience crying they were so moved by his speech. He was making the speech at a school and after the assembly was over he sat on a desk and people came by and hugged him and were crying and talking to him. He had the right attitude but even after that I still look at my life and wish things were different.

Hi shaggin,
I guess it is quite common for us to feel unhappy and not motivated at times. Also we don't have to keep comparing ourselves to these unfortunate people. Just adjust our own attitudes from time to time, make sure we know how to perk ourselves up after feeling down, that would be good enough.

He is an inspiration to many! I see too many people by me with their hand outstretched asking for money. I work 3 jobs to keep my family going. If I can do it - then anyone can do it. Kudos to him for his determination!

my kids are teenagers and still have that feeling of entitlement. My 16 year old son told me to just tell my main job that they are not paying me enough. If it was only that easy :) he will learn soon enough...

Your son being 16 years old should be able to take up some part time job, maybe then he will understand the concept of working and making some earnings. I had a holiday job when I was 14 and I earned a little of my own pocket money for the next month.

Hiya tomi!
He definitely meant to tell people something by that poster, although it is not so obvious unless one gets close to him or is behind the wheelchair directly.
I know it is very difficult for him because the roads and pavements around my workplace is not easily accessible to someone in a wheelchair. Sometimes, he may need to go one big round to arrive at a certain destination.

while reading it i cone to remember a person i come across in you tube.the video is entitled "man without limbs"im crying while viewing it.i feel so overwhelmed to see those person who is determined to live their lives inspite of their incapabilities.if these person can do it, why should we normal people lose hope?we cant afford to give up in life if we only come to see the point why they are trying.my heart goes with them.suddenly to see them we maybe able to realize how great we are to be normal and have a strong body but how pitiful of us be pessimistic and having a weak heart on simple things and failures....

I have seen a similar video, this man has only hands and the upper torso, but he is determined to live his life properly. It really touches us to see people like that, struggling with their lives and yet are more happy than we are. They bring hope to us.

oh!! i would really be inspired by this. You know i was too in a situation like this. I was riding the mrt train and there comes a group of disabled people and they were in their wheelchair since there was a space between the platform and the train, i offered to help her and she told me she can do it already.
She did! and as if she was on her foot stepping in on the train! :D It was inspiring that she and her companions are living the normal life and she has a smile on her face that she has a happy life - and a complete one. So i felt guilty that i was even complaining about my body!

Hi chiyosan,
It is good when trains have the facilities that cater to the handicapped. In recent years, there are many more elevators and ramps constructed for this purpose. I guess this lady you mentioned is quite accustomed to using the public transport, but I think it is nice of you to offer your help.

mmmm.. pr0bably tat person met an accident that cause him to use that chair. probably, before the accident he was a bike driver or a wild person who do drink n' drive.. so that might be the reason why that statement is on his chair. probably. . .
so yes, that statement is touchy, we should always becareful and always, always thank the man above for all our blessings and the blessings that we never thought of having!
have a great week! and God bless!c".)

hi bluemoonpavilion yes there is a lady here who is wheelchair bound but she is always so up and makes jokes and even plays bingo with the rest of us.she never seems down but is full of fun and often has cheered
me up when I felt a bit down. I admire the way she looks at her disability and I try to be more positive about my own handicap because while I wear a heavy brace on my left shoe, I can still walk'and get around and do for myself.so I may stump along with my quad cane but I am not so bad off after all.I loved that sentence. it makes me think.
she always has a smile and a kind word. I do respect her greatly.

Hi Hatley,
It is good to hear that you have a source of inspiration at your side. I guess you have also brought some happiness to others around you.
It seems trivial when we compare our own little sufferings to people like your friend there.

I feel badly for someone who has diabilities. Life is hard enough without extra obstacles in your way. I have to give praise to someone who would drive his wheelchair to work. he doesn't let his diabilities get him down.

Actually we rarely see people on wheelchairs here, those that we see often are those with severe disabilities and usually sell packets of tissue by the roadside or are street performers. We seldom see a person like this man who is just a office worker like we are, going to work everyday. Even we grumble sometimes about having to get up, go all the way to work. Think of how much more difficult it is for him.

It is really great to have thoughts like this. We have suffered but let our suffering be a warning to others so that they will avoid it.

I am sure he has good intentions, and who knows, the sign may actually warn some people. It is not a typical thing that a person in a wheelchair would do. Normally, they would try not to draw attention to themselves.

Yes, disabled people are ridiculously perseverant. Each one seems to push for normalcy. I have gone out of my way to help the disabled, the elderly and children. Not enough do. My children also have learned to help those people as well. We could, ourselves be disabled and will be elderly. We all remember our childhood. My son wonders if this man is looking for conversation about how he ended up in a wheelchair. My son is guessing it was a car accident or something. If I saw that sign I'd be asking.

Hi, I appreciate what you are doing out there and you are passing on the message to your children too.
I guess it was a car accident too, the way it was phrased. Maybe he did get some conversational strike-ups in this way, and he could be sharing his story with more people and benefitting them.

In our place, there is this institution for those in wheelchairs. I am very inspired by those people because even though they are handicapped, they can do what we can. They can play basketball, work as if that they don't have their wheels on. They are very inspiring, and full of hope. This people also remind us that we are all blessed and lucky to have our both feet move freely.

If you watched the paralympic games, you will be touched by the hard work these people put in. They needed to put in much more effort than normal people. Indeed we are blessed and fortunate as compared to them.

Hm, I wonder. Do you suppose it is intended to teach us about determination and perseverance, or was it meant as a warning not to do whatever it was that ended him up in a wheelchair?

How sad. Because I am really sad about this person after hearing about this. But I think this person have great self confidence so he doing every work through his wheelchair. I there are many fewer person who have really a great self confidence. And they never think about handicapped and always doing hard working. I salute them.

To have that kind of self confidence, he needs a lot of support around him. I would think that his family and colleagues help him out so that it is possible for him to continue working in his state. He also has to bear people's looks directed at him for being so different in this working environment and hectic society.

yeah these words talks a lot for other who watches , these are the warnings which he wants to express , some times when people met with a accident , he do want others to aware of this so that others wont affected , many does this things , eg a level crossing accident occurs , if some affected by that , would convey this message like some or the other way

I appreciate that this person feels confident of himself enough to put that up to warn others. At first when I read the message, I wonder what it means, I think the wheelchair could be a consequence of his wrongdoings, so that's why he wants to send out a warning.
