well, they are going to go get their shots today...maybe I can let them outside with mom and she can show them how to go out there!

I'm sorry for laughing...
First of all, remove the shoes, put them up high where the kittens can't reach. And then try a different kind of litter. If they don't like clay, try pine, or vice versa. And keep the litter box very, very clean. There are also products that you can buy that will attract them to the litter box.

It's ok.. the first thing I said to my daughter was that the whole poo in the shoe thing would be funny later..
They haven't even done anything in it.. Mom used to be a stray and she goes outside..she won't touch a litter box.. and they seem to think it's food. Sigh...

Because it is still kitten, can you remove the litter from it? Don't let it stay close to the litter if possible. You should also make a substitution, something that can attract your kitten so it will forget about eating the litter.
Also, make sure your shoes are safely put so your kitten cannot poop in there.

Maybe they're hungry? Maybe your litter looks like kibble? Make the area where the litterbox is far from the area where the kibble is. Place their kibble or cat food in a their own kitty dish, so that they'll know that this container is for food an this container is for poop!
For training them in using the litter box. Place the litterbox somewhere dark, or somewhere where they aren't exposed when they're doing their business. (Just like you. You wouldn't want others seeing you poop right?). After eating (normal cat food, not the litter), place them on top of the litter box, then rub their paws at the litter. Do this until they start pooping on the litter box.
Also, when they start rubbing your legs, they wanna poop, so it's also a good time to place them on top of the litter box.
Hope this helps you out :)

They have plenty of food, and momma cat is still being a good mom and letting them nurse.
I don't think they are shy because they pee on the carpet right in front of me!

Since you say they are kittens I would strongly suggest for the meanwhile that you remove the litter box for a bit.. They are still very young and are not quite sure between the difference of food and or liter. I would imagine this would make them a bit ill if they continue to eat the liter.
Good luck with this.
