Why is jueteng illegal?

There's a hearing in the Senate about jueteng where they have all crucified the alleged jueteng lords. I am not a big fan of gambling, in fact I'm really bad at it and so I am not really that interested in the issue. Watching the investigation, I kept asking the people watching with me why jueteng is illegal. They say because it's gambling. But so is pusoy, tongits and STL (Small Town Lottery). Everybody just shrugs when I point this out. So please, can someone enlighten me, what is so special about jueteng that it is illegal? Aside from the bribes of course, but that is just an aftereffect of jueteng as a form of protection. Do you think legalizing jueteng will stamp out the corruption? In the first place, are you in favor or legalizing it?

well jueteng is gambling.. if we legalize it, its just like teaching our people gamble their life... and u know the attitudes of the filipinos... and aside frrom that, it was also made knwn to everyone that in jueteng a lot of big people have committed crimes because of this. yes theres is small town lottery and lotto.. it is also gambling but it has positive objectives just like the lotto wherein the proceeds goes to charity... then in the small town lottery, the proceeds goes to the municipality where it is located, it also gives a percentage to the police department i guess.. so... u just have to live with it.

JUeteng has been around almost three to four decades already. i think if they created laws into making this legal before, then we wouldn't have problems in the first place. Tito Sotto doesn't understand that fighting this gamble makes it even more craving for more people to play with it. I have an auntie who's been playing this small town lottery for years, she never won a single number.

hi, i am pro legalization of jueteng. all will benefit if it is legalized, the country from its taxes, the people too because they will no longer be hiding betting on these. and the hypocrites saying it is not good to legalize, i guess they prefer it that they are cheated and they could not run over the jueteng men to claim their wins, if ever. corruption? there is more corruption now that it is still illegal. maybe by legalizing it, will eliminate the middleman, controlled tickets will be issued, hence lesser corruption. ann

Why is jueteng illegal? Because it subsists on the very blood of the poor whose last peso that is meant for his family's food on the table is used for a game of chance. Why is jueteng illegal? Because the perpetrators are the only ones who benefit from the game. They decide beforehand if they would put a winner, and when greed reigns, they pocket every centavo that accumulates to millions. And these perpetrators, dine in style, dwell in mansions, ride in comfort, and travel like there is no pressing matter for the day. Jueteng had kept a lifestyle for a few. Jueteng had made the poor poorer. That is why it is illegal. That is why it is a crime!

The only reason i can think of is that there are people who are earning big time from jueteng and that there are people who are jealous of it and making a noise in the guise of its being illegal. Gambling has been around since the spaniards or this could even go way back when the chinese has been bartering with us. I don't really get it when certain people look at it as if it were a scum but won't even comment if you mention any other forms of gambling around as long as its legal. Cockfights i think is illegal and yet a town fiesta is not complete without it. Why don't they just legalize it? or totally abolish any forms of gambling? I'm sure the latter is impossible so the only left is to legalize it. We should not blame the operators alone, the bettors are equally to blame. I don't gamble but i don't think i am in the position to take it against someone who wants to gamble his money as long as the money comes from his own pocket.

I guess its time to legalized jueteng since its the same with lottery anyways. The thing here is I'm sure that gambling lords will probably invent a new illegal gambling to replace jueteng. Better start implementing laws and stop protecting these gambling lords.

Jueteng is illegal because the law forbids this game of chance. Now if your question why the law forbids jueteng while other form of gambling are condoned then perhaps because jueteng has always been the source of corruption. Many officials, and many powerful people behind this game have been reaping wealth out of this so the government does not really want this game. Of course the government wanted to be benefitted instead. This is the reason why they don't disagree with the Small Town Lottery, the Sweeptakes and all the other gamblings controlled by the government. Besides they were saying that the poor people are the one who suffer because of Jueteng. Well its the poor people's fault I should say. I am also not rich but I don't ever involve myself in any form of gambling. I always believe that gambling is a sin. My God will always bless me anyway so I don't need to get involved in any gambling just to get more money. Nobody gets rich in gambling actually. All gamblers will end up poor in the long run. So I am not in favor or legalizing Jueteng. I say no to Jueteng and all other forms of gambling.

hi advocate! i also wonder why jueteng seems to be special and always an issue hen it has no difference with other games like those that you mention and even sweepstakes. i don't really mind if they will legalized jueteng coz i feel like it ont really change anything for the public coz those who wants to bet will still bet and those who don't ant don't. i think jueteng can't be legalized because there are lots of 'people' behind who don't really ant to legalize it, not for the reason of because its gambling but because lots of money will loss on their pockets... coz instead that the proceeds ill go them it will go to the government, i mean by means of tax. am i right with that thinking? that when jueteng is already legal, they will be obliged to pay taxes... jueteng is popular because its for 'masa' [em]lol[/em as compared to others betting in jueteng is just small amount.

Hello Advocate, Let me tell you something about Jueteng, it's been aroung for a long time,i mean a LONG TIME. when my mom and I was watching television, and saw this issue about jueteng. she mentioned that she and grandma use to gamble this game when she was just akid. Yeah, that's probably how old jueteng is, not to mention she was born in the 1940's. so,probably she played about it ten years later? i think creating the STL is a mistake, they should have legalized it from the beginning, making laws in this gamble...instead of creating a counter for it.

The way they do jueteng is illegal because of the red tape and the hidden way to corrupt people to steal from other people.

Well I'm not a pro-gambling person but then I think they should legalized it already. The gambling lord and some politician are the only benefiting from this thing so if it is legalized the money can now be going to government projects and charities.

I have asked the same question before not until someone interviewed on tv revealed how jueteng is actually being played. It's one gambling that deceives many from believing that there's nothing fishy about it and there's a great chance of winning of which all these are false. It's illegal in a way that it deceive lots of people who bet. The container that they are shaking the balls in it contain two compartments. One contains balls of various numbers while the other contains balls of specific numbers. When they begin shaking it, the first compartment containing balls of different numbers automatically shuts off. The second compartment opens as they pick each ball out making the public believe that it was a ball of chance. But the truth is, each ball they picked is the pre-installed ball. In this way, it's hard for those who bet to win the grand pot of money at stake. Unlike the STL, it's a what-you-see, what-you-get gambling when the ball is picked out for the public to see.

Legalizing Jueteng will not be the solution to illegal gambling. Once you've legalized Jueteng, all the money that will be collected from bets will, naturally, go to the government. There will be no more money for the Jueteng lords, police and politicians. In time, these people will devise plans or another illegal game that will make money for them again. And then the government will run after them again. It will just be a cycle. The way to stop illegal gambling is to release people from poverty so that they will not be enticed with this quick-rich approach. Easier saying it than doing it but there is no other way.
