Yeah, just around the block, but it was easily 1200-1400 steps and last year I couldn't have done it!
Since last summer (09) when the temperature finally broke I started walking at Maggie's. I figured out the other day that walking to and from the mail it was over 400 steps, and since I wasn't winded doing that anymore, I would try around the block.
I don't know if I'm going to keep doing it, but it was such a lovely cool evening I decided to try it.
I did feel a bit of a "burn" because I'm so out of shape, but I wasn't winded or feeling too tired.
I know, I know, it wasn't very far, but it was for me!
I feel good about this, and hope to do more... I've been trying to get the roomie to start walking, maybe in a mall (she doesn't do outside.)
So, have you done any exercises that you have been working up to lately?

I've been trying to work up to 5 minutes on my stationary bike. The problem with the bike is that the handles go back and forth as you pedal and my arms get tired so quickly!
I've also succeeded in taking the stairs two at a time! I'm trying to build up knee strength and boy, did that hurt the next day!! But I can tell the difference when I walk, having done the stairs that way for a week.
Congrats on the walk around the block!! That's a great milestone and I hope you can at least double it before it gets too cold!

I want to go back to 100 crunches in three directions. I did 10 three times in 3 directions last night. I may try for a 4th one soon. My husband has been walking 1/2 to somewhere and 1/2 a mile back. Eventually, he may be able to easily do 1 mile or more.

crunches? like swatting down? if it means too much knee bending, I'm so not there! I hurt my knees the first time falling off a horse and I've only done more damage to them since. They aren't to the point of replacement, but I suspect they would be if I tried that!

No, crunches aren't squatting down (I had to read that a few times to get what you meant-I kept reading like swatting a fly.Luckily the next sentenses explained and helped me know what you were saying). Squatting down is called squats. Crunches are modified sit ups. Knees bent. You only come up an inch off the floor or whatever distance contractrs your stomach muscles. Old style sit ups cause back problems because the lumbar region isn't supported.
I have bad knees, too. There is NO weight on the knees during the crunches. The bent knees force the lumbar against the ground and to stay there during the crunch. Most people who have back injuries are told to strengthen their stomach muscles with crunches. I put my hands in a fist under my chin so I don't pull on my neck and head. I learned that in a video because I was always getting yelled out to not pull up with my arms on my head and neck, but no one told me that, but the work out tapes were from someone who had also gone through physical therapy. You blow all your air out which pulls in your stomach some, raise up an inch, that works your muscles more.
For my bad knees, I used to walk up and down stairs at work. I built up muscles on the side of my knees that you would not believe, but I think my knee caps, like my Moms are arthritic and decintigrating. So no, I'm not doing squats and they're not good for most people any way.

Awesome elic, it doesn't matter how far you go as long as you just go. Once you get use to it, you will be able to go farther.
Going around the block is a great start! Just do it a few more times to get use to it and then try just a bit further. No need to walk fast, just do your own pace, it's exercise no matter how you look at it.
I walk to the bank and to the store when needed. It's probably about 10 minutes away but I don't count the steps, I just go. I should walk alot more also but it is more fun when you have someone with you. I get bored, haha.
It would be nice if your roomie would do it. Maybe you can tell your roomie you would like her to help YOU out by walking a bit, when you are actually helping HER out also. Sometimes that reverse psychology works.

That would be nice if she did some on the cruise and fun at the same time! Hopefully, like you mentioned, she will come back feeling more revved up and will keep on moving around as this is so good for her..and you.
I don't have much choice as far as the heat and the cold, no car here. If I need to get something, I have to go regardless which means if it's hot, I go in the morning. If it's cold, I just bundle up and make the most of it.

I have been saying in my brain everyday, I want to get back to exercise and then everyday I put it off, saying I have to do this then I have to do that. You have inspired me with your post and I vow to take a walk around my neighborhood later today. It has rained the last two days but I think the sun is starting to come back out.

That's a good start. Eventually you should be able to walk farther and feel better about it. Takes time to get a regular program started and stick with it. I have a bad back so have to be real careful about doing alot of walking or lifting. My husband and I walked about a half a mile last weekend and I did ok with it but would like to get back to walking a mile or more. Don't think I can do it everyday but need to get out there atleast 2-3 times a week. We walked on a walking/biking trail just a few feet from a lake and it was so pretty. It's about 5 miles from our house and was extremely crowded because it was a beautiful morning.

I have bulging disks which prevents me from doing too much at one time. I sure feel it the next day and some days can barely walk for a couple of hours in the morning. My weight is good but still need to get that heart rate working. The walking/biking trail that we were on was dangerous. Some of those bikers were flying around the walkers. One wrong move to either side of the trail could have been a disaster.

Ouch, I feel it for your back, mine isn't "bad" but I have problems with it along with a lot of other body parts. my feet and chest are my big issues tho...
We have some lovely hike and bike trails, but I don't want to drive miles to get to them, when the block is about all I can handle...

I did walk the block in the early morning for a couple of days then something happened and I walked it at night and next day something stopped me again from doing the morning which I prefer so I dropped it. (I ran into a very nasty person who kicked my baby dog in the guts. I was so mad and so upset. Why do people have to be so damb nasty and vicious towards defenceless animals?)

This guy is dangerous and feared by the whole town. I'd been giving him the benefit of the doubt till now...stupid me, thinking if I treated he and his woman like decent people that they would behave that way. These people are something a dog drops that stinks.

I prefer morning walk instead of night walk.I love to go to walk on near by hills o in gaden. Our city has this lovely garden at the center and many people do come there for morning walk. There are jogging tracks made of red soil and lot of space with green grass where you can walk barefoot. I love to go there for every morning. Its been one years I haven’t miss my morning walk.

I am NOT a morning person, just getting out of bed is work for me, I tried walking for a bit in the morning once, and that didn't even last a week. I just don't do mornings well. Besides, in Texas, even mornings can be warm and the sun is hot as soon as its up, so its not worth walking outside until the weather changes.
I have been collecting cans at my clients on work mornings, that gets me out and moving around before I actually go to work, I hope my feet feel better than they did today when I get up tomorrow.

it is good that you were able to do that. I hope that you are more healthy now. as for me I have not done much in the way of excersise even though I need too. we have a tread mill I put together last year and we hardly ever use it.

Congratulations! That would be a far walk for me also! I think it is a far walk just to go to the bathroom and that is probably half of the distance you walked. Try and keep at it and you will probably be able to go further! If nothing else, it will probably make you feel like you have accomplished something. You shouldn't have to worry about the snow, like us people up north do, so you might have a lot of nice evenings.
I try and exercise everyday, to keep the muscles that I still have toned a little. I can't do anything real strenuous, but every little bit helps I guess! I would probably be in worse shape if I didn't do anything. The days I do exercise, I seem to feel better about myself.

I counted the steps from the bedroom to the bath and it was about 80.
If you can take some music with you that will make it seem to go faster, and you can keep pace with the beat. I exercise to music and it always seems to make it easier. Good luck!

Fantastic! Walking is such great exercise--I walk with a neighbor sometimes, although it is a struggle to keep up with her. I have been trying to do some physical activity every other day--walking, swimming, WiiFit, and thought I was doing ok, until I took a strength-building glass at my friend's gym. A week later, and I am still recuperating! I guess that is what I need to work towards--being able to take such a class without being in horrible pain for 6 days.

Good for you!! I would keep walking, its very good for you. I usally walk a lot even to work every day, which isn't a really long walk but a regular walk. But I am on a leave right now and have not been doing my walks. I really need to be walking everyday, as I was diagnosed last year with rheumatoid arthritis. If I don't walk everyday I could eventually have trouble walking and doing anything. Wish I lived near you, we could be walking buddies, thats what I need someone to walk with everyday and someone to give me heck if I don`t walk, lol. Keep up the good work, it is worth it! :)

It is very hard to get back into exercise if you have been away from it for awhile. It is harder after surgery, when I had surgery a few years ago, I had been walking and biking. It was painful to get back to exercise again and it was a long time before I started walking again and I have never picked up the bike again. But once I started walking again I felt better, some of it is the fresh air too, I think. I only walk and use this exercise machine I have (when the weather is bad), but thats when I actually do it. Lately, I`m having a hard time getting back into it again. But you have inspired me I`m going to try to get a walk in tomorrow.

Yeah, I've never really been into exercise, so I need an excuse, like looking for cans, to get out and walk. Austin is a large city in Texas, and while I have been walking to the mail - only twice did I drive over, and once was because I knew there was a large bag to pick up. Not to say that I walked every day, if I drove by it on my way back from shopping, say, I would pick it up and continue to my client's apartment. But the only day I just drove over, it was about 103º (like about 32º C)

Walking is great, and the important thing is that we should never compare ourselves with others. Just be happy about our own progress..
I take a walk almost every day as long as the there is no ice on the streets. Even when there is ice, I can go out while it is light so that I can see where there is some sand to walk on. I hope I won´t fall this winter, my back doesn´t like slipping on the ice.
It is possible to do exercise indoors, but it is always refreshing to walk outdoors and meet other people in the street. I like to have a goal when walking, it is a bit more meaningful that way..

very true, I went to the mail box twice today, and then when Maggie sent me to the store, I walked there too, don't know if I'm up to the whole block tonight, since I've already done all that and cut up cauliflower and made more sandwiches for the rest of the week...

I had to read that last sentence three times before I finally got it.
I have not done much in the way of exercise since my hospitalization back in July. I really was weak when I first got home and knew that I'd have to work to get my strength back. However, that was nearly 3 months ago. First, I couldn't go outside because the instructions with the medication I was sent home with said to stay out of the sun. When that was all gone, it was just too hot. Then, it was too wet. Today, I did walk to and from the bible class, 3/4 mile each way. When I got home, I negated the exercise by finding this huge chocolate chip cookie that had been hidden in the freezer for months.

I hear that being weak, I was knocked for a loop by the shoulder surgery, I expected it for the reduction, but the shoulder really was hard - of course, since it was my right arm and I'm right handed, well, I'm probably lucky the roomie set me up with food I could eat with one hand!

Good on you ElicBxn! Sadly I haven’t started my walking regime which I promised I would start as soon as the weather here warmed up. We are in spring now and the temperature has been just right lately but lately other commitments have put a stop to our walking. My husband and I are determined to get ourselves into some sort of shape before we travel to the other side of the country to visit his family in January. We have four months which is plenty of time but we have to start now, so no more excuses for us!
