When someone says "japanese food" what do you think of? I think that most people would answer "sushi" or "ramen." ...well ramen actually originates from China, but it's a very common dish in Japan, too. Anyways, when I think of japanese food, I think of all sorts of things; japanese bakeries, mochi, dorayaki, rice balls, tempura, udon and other noodle dishes, umeboshi, furikake rice, fruit-decorated cakes, curry rice and fish dishes of all sorts.

It usually makes me think of Japanese Maki. It's one of my favorite when eating in a Japanese are restaurant.

My experience with Japanese anything is quite limited. I have tried sushi once and found it bland and uninteresting and finicky to make. I tried a sip of saki once and found it to be nasty tasting. I've tried udon noodles but didn't know they were Japanese. I prefer pasta and tempura means fried...doesn't it?

I think of udon, miso and urigiri- I have yet to try true japanese rice balls but I hear they are simple but yummy.

Konnichiwa! Nihon no tabemono wa... totemo oishii desu ne! Okay, my Japanese really fails (but I took it for 5 years, haha). I've tried mochi (are these the sugared bread roll type things?) and I've heard of tempura and udon noodles. I don't eat fish, so I really haven't had the chance to try much of their kinds of foods (because they have such a fish-oriented diet!). Japanese food though is definitely underrated (except for Sushi, of course). Good discussion. (Nihongo ga dekimasuka??)

Japanese cuisine has been my favourite. It uses a wide range variety of ingredients and the food itself is prepared with sophisticated skills. The presentation of Japanese food can be seen as part of Japanese ideology and culture. Sushi, raw fish (sashimi), and very spicy green mustard (wasabi) come into picture when someone mentions Japanese food. For Japanese food lovers, such as me, we are attracted by tempura (deep-fried veggies and sea food), takoyaki (octopus dumplings), teppanyaki (stir-fry), square-shaped bento (a lunch box type of set meal, with meat, vegetable and sundries all placed in little square cases). And never forget sushi on conveying belt! It is a special eating experience that you will never encounter in other cultures!

Well, as a Japanese citizen I can't answer sushi or ramen As you have mentioned, we have a wide variety of delicious foods here, and non delicious ones too. There are many sweets produced with beans, many fish products like oden, now that the cold weather has come back, many different kinds of grilled meat, different kinds of noodles and soups too... Well, depending on what area of Japan you go to, there's a different typical food product from there, and usualy each area have really delicious typical foods

sushi, takoyaki (octopus pops) and onigiri (rice balls w/seaweed) are the stuff that comes to mind when i hear Japanese food. i would love to eat at a Japanese restaurant with a Japanese ambiance and lots of sort of Japanese food with friendly Japanese people around. In short, I wanna visit Japan and eat.

I also think of ramen but then it's also common in Korea. Other than that the first would be sushi as you said, then tempura, onigiri, sashimi and wasabe? haha.. i don't even know if it's a japanese dish. now, i'm hungry. XD

One of my favorite foods are Japanese foods (next to Filipino's). Ramen, sushi and tempura are my favorite ones. I just made California maki last weekend and everyone at home loves it. They were very happy to eat homemade japanese food.

I am actually one of the most people you are talking about who answered Sushi because in most Japanese restaurants here in the Philippines, Sushi and Maki are their staple foods. My favorite is Maki though, in particular California Maki because I love how the rice blends well with the mangoes, fish, cucumber and Japanese mayo. Add some wasabi on it and it is a surefire delectable dish!

Yes, i instantly think of sushi. I love it. Anyone who doesnt know about sushi, or dont even want to know (because they dont like rice, fish, or whatever ), think its disgusting at the very first moment someone mentions it haha. But there are lots of different types and pieces. Sashimi, makis, uramakis , and many different types of each one. I really love sushi , and I like it more with some wasabi .

When someone says Japanese food i think of Sashimi. Sashimi is one of my favorite Japanese food. And did you know that you must eat Sashimi before the main course or else you'll get a stomachache.
