A few weeks back, Window media player version 11.0 got installed on my computer. After that the sound on my computer is disabled. For troubleshooting, I un-installed the WM Player 11.0 and now I have the older version. Also, if I use earphone, there is no problem with sound on my Windows XP OS. On the same computer I have windows 7 also, I do not have any problem with sound when I login to Windows 7. I am sure it is not a problem due to computer hardware but I have no idea how to troubleshoot the Windows XP OS to enable sound in the speakers. I am using Compaq laptop.

I think you may check your all sound setting in your computer. Go to control panel and their you will find an options of sounds. I think you may checked everything their. And if you don't find solutions. Then again install sound driver on your system. Because sometimes sound driver may be corrupted.

I have checked sound settings, will recheck it and if it still does not work, I will try to un-install and re-install the drivers and will mention the result here.

Performing a system restore or reinstalling the sound driver may fix the problem.

I will try these options, however, I am not sure if I had set the system restore point. External speakers\ear phone work fine but the internal speakers do not work only on Windows XP OS, does it seem to be due to the sound drivers?

check the compatability of windows media player v11. on your sound card. sometimes the higher ver of software are not compatible on your hardware config. just like vista. if you installed a lower ver of any software. it will not run properly. that's why i don't like upgrading some software installed in my computer.

I did not want to install Windows media player 11.0 on my computer. It got installed by mistake, later on I un-installed it but still Sound is not there. As others have mentioned, I am planning to repair the OS and if that does not work, I will un-install and re-install XP. Any other ideas??
