A lot of people will lie just to cover up the bad thing(s) they have done. The reasons why people lie are as follows;
they are trying to avoid punishments. If they have covered up the bad thing they have done then they will be successful not to experience what should be done to them if ever they are proven they have done such thing which is usually a punishment.
They would want to keep it a secret. They will be hiding what really happened so these people involved in any acts will just not tell you the truth or keep you from knowing all of it.
These are some reasons why people lie. what are your thoughts guys, please share. thanks.

People lie either to protect themselves, or protect others.
All the con mans are liars, but not all liars are con mans.
If everything is black/white in this world, imagine how many marriages will break up, and how many children will be heartbroken.
We can't go without lies, but lies also hurt us. The boundry between good lie and bad lie is as thin as a sheet of paper; often we blur it so we thought to make a bad lie feels like a good one.
Lying is just part of human nature, and we'll live with it until the end of our days.
