He showed me the recipe. It only uses pumpkin, spices and brown sugar. He put a little butter into it. Part of why I wanted us to have a pumpkin pie was so there would be some milk in his diet (my husband doesn't drink milk, but he will have it with cereal or in some thing).
Amazingly, it tastes good, but I do kind of miss the milk and eggs, it's good, but missing the richness that I've grown to know and love. So that defeated one of my purposes in having him make it. But the other purpose was to use up the pumpkin that I bought.
So have you ever used a recipe that was different from a traditional one that people are used to? Did it turn out well? Did people like it?
I really liked his potato salad with oil and vinegar instead of mayonnaise. That was terrific, people asked me for the recipe for that. But I think the lack of milk and eggs, I don't think people would ask for this one. It also makes it really, really dark. I thought he had burned it. But it's the lack of milk and eggs. Also the amount of brown sugar and spices I think make it darker.

I have made a pumpkin pie for my son before without the crust because he does nto really like the crust, but I have never tried making one without the milk or eggs. I think it would totally throw the pie off. I am sure it is still good, but as you said, I would miss the milk and eggs.

LOL, that was a good way for him to get out of the milk, can't say I blame him though I hate milk myself. I don't usually drink it at all just in cerel and in cooking, like your hubby.
Has he ever tried skin milk, I hate milk too and I can drink that sometimes. Just to get it into me I will sometimes make egg nog or chocolate milk. Chocolate milk though would not be a good idea if he is on a calorie or sugar restricted diet.
I get some milk into me through meals, potatoe scallop, corn chowder, fish chowder; does he like any of these? I also take Tums with calcium to get the calcium that I'm missing from not drinking milk. There is cheese too, I add it to meals like salads, pasta, etc., if he is not on a low cholestrol diet.
My mom would like his pumpkin pie recipe, although she loves pumkin pie she would probably try it as she is lactose intolerate and must take pills to be able to use milk products.

I drink skim milk. He drinks whole milk, it's either that kind in his cereal or nothing at all. He doesn't like egg nog, he doesn't like chocolate milk.
He does eat soups that most people think have milk in them. Look at the cans or ask at the restaurants. A good restraunt uses milk and/or cream, but in the states, most of the canned stuff you buy has modified food starch-no dairy at all. I used to count soup as dairy, but now I don't unless I know it is. He eats cheese at least one meal per day.
Your Mom would probably like it. It's not custardy or rich, but it is good.

I don't add it to soups. I was brought up with just broth from cooking soup bones. I'll have to find some recipes for cream of this and that which are actually milk or cream. I love chowders and scallops.
He hates milk because his Mom mixed 50% powdered andd 50% skim. So he wouldn't drink it. It has to be real milk and to him that is whole milk.

Oh, I don't know how he can drink whole milk and yet not like milk, me I find the whole milk more yuk.
I didn't mean soup you buy, I meant soups, chowders and scallops you make yourself, I use whole milk in them. I make most of my soups or add to store bought soups, such as tomatoe soup, or cream soups, I add milk to those. These would be the only ones I would count as dairys. I use it in many dishes because I don't care to drink it. :)

Lactaid milk, I tried that one time. Yuck, so sour. I'd have to put tons more sugar in it. After an operation, I couldn't drink milk without having the runs and I tried it, it was horrible! I ate yogurt until my body finally had the bacteria stick and switched to non fat milk so my intestins could handle it better. Glad yogurt and skim milk work. I'd have had to have used lactaid pills.

If it didn't have the same richness and moistness then I wouldn't want to eat, I'd think it'd be too dry.. though not sure until after I'd tasted it. Hmm, I hadn't made this personally but an aunt and cousin made a cheesecake from a recipe of Suzanne Somers, it wasn't appetizing at all, though I do believe I ate the whole piece to be nice.

It wasn't dry. The butter he added (that wasn't in the original recipe) and squash or pumpkin as it cooks goes from hard and dry to moist on its own.
Yeah, I had to get the eggs and milk out of my head to enjoy it, but I liked it.
Suzanne Somers probably had a diet one. Diet cheesecake is quite disappointing, isn't it? It's like diet quiche, some things just shouldn't be made into diet food.

Your last statement is very true. Diet quiche doesn't have egg yokes, only the whites and it has skim milk and only veggies, no bacon and only low fat cheese. By the time you do all that to it,it's either bland or gastly

haha see I didn't know the recipe!
Yeah it was a diet one as she has a diet plan, I forget what it's called somersize maybe? she has her own sugar and all that too. I've never had diet quiche though I have had quiche... only certain things can actually be called diet and still taste good!

I made German Potato Salad back when I was married to my first husband because I knew he like it. Mashed potatoes and sourcream. Wasn't too bad but I didn't care for it much. I made a great American Potato Salad and like it just fine. I also made lemon squares and added my own ingredients. My family loved them. I usually add new ingredients to most regular recipes. Spices them up and gives them more flavor. I think a cook who doesn't test things our isn't much of a cook.

You, I and my husband like to experiment, but some people hate to experiment and some people hate anything new. I've never had that kind of German Potato salad, I've had hot potato salad that was called German, but it was pretty much like any other only hot.
I tried lemon squares once and they didn't turn out. They work out great for my friend, so I let her keep making them. I'll probably try again, but I don't have the money to waste on messed up results.

Hi writersedge. I believe cooking should be a never ending exploration and a way to express your creativity therefore I would recommend not to follow any traditional recipes anyway because people are naturally different and you should adjust traditional recipes in your desires. Just my opinion :D

We generally make it the first time according to the reciope. See what the result is and adjust it next time to our tastes. Some stuff is like perfection so we don't change it, but some of it needs help. Also as people age, as we have, people tend to add more spices because our abilities to taste and smell aren't as keen and in my case, I'm used to mild hot peppers and not I'm moving on to medium heat. So time does change some things. Thanks and take care.

Oh yum! I love pumpkin pie especially the one that I make. I make my pumpkin pie with milk and eggs. When I first try a recipe I make sure to do it as it says on the paper but then if I decide to try and make the recipe again I might change a few things here and there to create something new.

The difference with my pumpkin pie isn't the ingredients, but how I get the pumpkin and that is fresh. so I guess it isn't new, but different considering how most people eat out of the can today..Personally I don't know if I'd like a pumpkin pie without eggs or milk, that is what makes it a custard and like you said, more rich and creamy..Oh wow, why are you talking food, first onions and now pie, my tummy is growling...lol

Because I was checking the onions on my window sill and sampling my husband's pie! I've used pumpkin from the can and from the actual pumpkin. I was actually hoping he'd use half for a pie and half with meat and a stew kind of thing, but he didn't.He used half like regular hard squash baked in the oven. Oh well.
Pumpkin with a venison stew in it is wonderful if you ever get to do that.

you can make stuffed potatoes, buy a big potato, cut in 2 pieces remove the inside leaving little more than bark, use chicken or other meat that you like, put some tomatoes in small pieces and bake... it´s really great
