Where should the BP fines go to?

President Obama's point man for on the Gulf coast's restoration Navy Secretary Ray Mabus says that a significant portion of fines against companies involved in the spill should be placed in a fund for Gulf restoration.
Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., support legislation that would require that at least 80 percent of the civil and criminal penalties charged to BP under the Clean Water Act be returned to the Gulf Coast for long-term economic and environmental recovery.
Every Governor and local politician has their own plan
So what do you think about this? Also don't you think that every dime of the fines collected from BP should go to the restoration of the Gulf Coast?

IMO, every dime should go towards restoration, both environmental and economic. I don't see why anyone else should get any percentage of it.

Just kidding. Yes, I do think that would be a fitting way to use that money, and if there's any left over, I'm sure there are other spill areas that could be cleaned up.

I think some of the money should go to the Gulf Coast for restoration, etc., but all Americans paid for the Coast Guard, Administration, etc. resources involved, not just the Gulf Coast residents. And I feel that way about other fines collected for other reasons.

i think that the fines should obviously go mainly to restoring the gulf coast. I agree that at leasts 80 percent should go, but maybe even more. Some of them money can be used for other spending and things we have such as the school systems and other places that need it too.

was it? fines are usually a punishment, not a donation specifically for something. i doubt all the speeding fines go towards road upkeep for example. that said yes, it seems right that the money should go towards restoring the economy and environment of the areas hit. if schools in that area need more resources i don't see a huge problem with some of the funds going to them either, they are for the families of those affected. of course i do not think the money should end up funding something like a nice little payrise for senators or a nice little extra subsidy for the oil industry...

Yes, the fines should go to restoration of what BP ruined but you know they won't. They'll disappear into political causes. The jobs lost, wildlife destroyed and land ruined will remain unchanged. Any time you give our government money it goes to their political machine, not to the people--same with our taxes, we have no say how they are spent. We are truly robbed, taxation without representation, no say in how they are spent and any fines levied against those that harm our lands are directed toward the ruling party's needs.
