How did the statement, "Doing ____till the cows come home" get started?

Yeah, my aunt got a ride in it for her 80th birthday, and we went to watch...it was taken in the first pit stall at Dover about 2 weeks before last year's june race.
It was actually one of his retired cars and is now used for giving people rides around Dover.
I'm a huge Jr. fan as well...

i've read this before..basically, had to do with farm life..the farmer took the cows to the grazing field in the mornings, and they would all come home at night..so basically, they worked till the cows came home and the day was done.

actually, that was Groucho Marx who started using the phrase as an indefinite time....now why he did that, I don't know.

it had to do with farmers, i think. and when they came home it was time to go in or something, not sure.
