I get excited about Halloween coming up in the next few weeks. I know my kids are counting the days til they can go trick or treating. They have their costumes as I bought them last year @ 50% off. I would of hoped for a lower price but by then it's only the ity bity sizes left. Though I was pondering making costumes for next Halloween as my oldest it seems will be near the top of the size range for what I've seen & she'll be 9 next year and as thin as a rail. Have you made your own costumes? if so what ones did you make?

Making Halloween costumes can be very inexpensive and it also allows you to have family time. There are many creative costumes you can make at home with stuff you have lying around are you can purchase items from a local goodwill for pennies. Ive posted a few creative do it yourself costume ideas on my website WWW.MOMAVE.COM please feel free to leave feedback and comments.Happy Halloween :)

One costume I made for my daughter was Laura from little house on the prairie, her favorite book series when she was eight. It was a dress, apron, bonnet, and bloomers. I just sent it with her so that she can have it for when her daughter is large enough. It will not be for a few years.

We always made our own. It was more imaginative, and I did not have the money. My kids have been a lot of interesting things. In their schools often they were not allowed to wear costumes or only were allowed to wear literary or historical costumes. So one year my son wanted to be Charley Chaplin, my daughter wanted to be a bride. Everyone thought they were bride and groom. One year he was a robot, she was a roller skating mime, etc.

I HATE Halloween...always have...because of the costume thing. Could never afford to buy anything for my kids and mom never bought us anything. Now a days it is even dangerous to trick or treat.
But buying after this holiday this year for next year...its a good idea, but a gamble. what if the kid has a growth spirt, what if that isn't in fashion next year, or not cute or a number of other things.
Making them seems to be the best way. I'd checkout FamilyFun.com magazine..they have tons of great and easy ideas for halloween costumes every year.

When I was a child we made our own costumes about as often as we would buy costumes. I remember one year I was a shaggy dog for Halloween and we made that costume out of paper grocery bags and newspaper, it was actually a lot of fun to make the costume. Then there were a couple years while I was growing up that I was a bag of jelly beans. It was a clear plastic trash bag filled with all different colors of balloons, we got a lot of compliments on that costume.

Halloween was always my most favorite holiday as I truly made a big deal out of it. I loved to see my kids all excited and dress so cute. I use to sew all their costumes and great reviews form all the moms and teachers. I have made costume like, rainbow bright, witch, snow white, the joker batman. Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. Batman and Cat-woman, Wonder-woman and the bionic man... Elvira and Count Dracula.. Oh my they were countless.
What I use to do is go to the craft store and get the materials on clearance and boy was I excited sewing these ever so cute costumes.
This will be a rough year for me as they are young adults now so they buy their own and I will not but get to see pictures as they do not live with me anymore, but when those cell phone pictures come through I am sure to shed a tear.

Halloween was so much fun when my boys were going out! I made most of their costumes, usually with the help of thrift shops. The thrift shops had masks, old shirts, sometimes whole costumes but usually just pieces that I could put together and then sew a cape, a sheet, whatever to complete it. How about trading with other mothers?

hi 3snugglebunnies Its been a long long time since my son went trick or treating, and if I remember he went as a skeleton one time and t he last time as a computer , fitting in that he grew up to be a computer programmer. We here at Gold C rest will have a costume party like we did last year. It was such fun and the prizes were fifty and twenty five dollars.George our resident president, a likable chunky fellow borrowed Sandra's large dress and bra with stuffing in it and silk stockings and dressed as a lady. We almost had hysterics from laughing so hard. oNce he lost the stuffing in one side of his bra. I really enjoyed the party although I had not come in costume myself. I have been trying to think of an inexpensive costume I could make and my creative gene seemed to have fled the scene. My little girl went as a fairy and everyone raved over the costume my mom made for her. I had almost forgotten that. we lost lisa Rose when she was eight. oh that was so hard, as for so long I just could not come to terms with it, you just do not lose your children before they have even had a chance to grow up.

I've thought about it. I'm not really crafty though, so it didn't get far. One year though I created a Mickey Mouse costume for my 4th. I just bought a black turtle neck, red pants (at Salvation Army).. sewed white buttons on the red pants, and borrowed a friend's mickey ears hat.. then I painted his nose black. Looked good to me. I also sort of created a Hannah Montana costume. I bought the wig at Walmart.. but the rest of the outfit came from the Salvation Army... my oldest son wore that costume a few years ago then my daughter wore it last year (with different clothes, again from the Salvation Army). I haven't a clue what we're doing this year. I did buy my daughter a witch costume last year 50% off.. but I don't know if it will fit her. I keep all the boy's costumes from year to year, so maybe I have something one of them will wear. The oldest has decided he's not trick or treating this year so I don't have to buy him a costume thankfully. Hopefully I won't have to buy more than 1 or 2 costumes this year!

I have made several costumes for my kids over the years. My favorite was a clown costume that I made for my oldest son when he was about 3. Because it was a clown costume obviously a boy or a girl could wear it, which it ended up getting passed from kid to kid in my family and also my sister borrowed it for her two children. But my favorite costume was a costume that my husband made for our oldest son. He took a garbage can (new of course), and cut the bottom out. He hot glued coke cans, potato chips bags and all around the side...even put a little graffiti on the side. Then he took the lid and glued all kinds of garbage to that and made it so it could fit on Nick's head. Nick got so many compliments on his garbage can costume..he even won a prize at his school for best costume.
