Freebies for stocking stuffers? Any other ideas?

My 5 year old niece saw that Pop-pop got a package the other day and was upset that no one ever sends her packages. I thought about buying her a little something and mailing it to her just to make her smile, then I remembered that when I was a kid there were places you could write to, send postage or a SASE and get something in the mail for "free" (minus the cost of the postage). So I was looking online to see what I could find in that regard. I found quite a few places offering small toys, coloring books, etc for simply writing to them and requesting them (and including postage in some cases). Then it hit me. We put coloring books and stuff like that in the kids holiday stockings every year. Why not use some of those freebies to help cut the cost of stocking stuffers?
Any other ideas for cutting the cost of the holiday season? Sure most of the stocking stuffers we put in are a dollar or two, but that adds up. I help my mom fill the stocking for 4 of her grandchildren (my son, 2 nieces and 1 nephew). I'd bet that the stockings alone tend to have $20 worth of goodies, if not more.

That's a really good idea! I know when I was a kid I LOVED getting mail and was always sad that I so rarely got any.
I'd space out a few of the more "obviously freebies" type gifts for her to get in the mail and then the good stuff would definitely go in the stocking! It's a little late now, but when school starts back is an excellent time to get crayons or markers! There is nothing like a new pack of crayons and when I was little, I was ROUGH on them, so I probably could have used a new set every year :).

If you watch the freebies websites, you can come up with all sorts of free goodies for stocking stuffers, but you'd better hurry, because quite often, it takes up to 8 weeks to get them. I always use freebies for stocking stuffers, but I start gathering them up in January.

Christmas is definately an expensive time of year!
A great website is Chapmans icecream kids club. Its for kids to play games and accumulate points and then get prizes. Most of the prizes are promotional but they have some cool things on there. I play it and get the free stuff and use it for the Operation Christmas child boxes that go overseas.

I'm not sure where your from but the craft store Michaels always has free crafting events. Some of them are pretty nice... like jewelry ones. Check those out because most of them you can make for free.
