Politicians putting off important work until after elections

This is a little news item that I saw on my Yahoo! page (although it's about the United States government, I could be applied to all governments that believe in Democracy.): U.S. Congress punts tough choice until after election (AP) AP - A deeply unpopular Congress is bolting for the campaign trail without finishing its most basic job — approving a budget for the government year that begins on Friday. Lawmakers also are postponing a major fight over taxes, two embarrassing ethics cases and other political hot potatoes until angry and frustrated voters render their verdict in the Nov. 2 elections. I don't think that is the right way to go about it, especially in this case. There is a good chance that President Obama and most of the U.S. Congress won't get re-elected. Although the Presidential election isn't for two more years, I say the our ALL OF OUR Representatives, both the President and the Democrats (the party that I most agree with most of the time) in Congress need to ACT NOW! Show us that you are trying and what YOU STAND FOR AND BELIEVE IN! Show us what your opponents are trying to stop! This is what is needed NOW!!!

the real problem here is when the votes are actually cast after the elections. The reason is because there will be many many lame duck congressmen/women out there that can vote however they are pushed without any consequences. Not only do they not have to worry about getting it in the polls, they already lost so who cares how they vote!

bribery, lies - Money if front of group with money coming out of his sleeve and fingers crossed behind his back
That is, unfortunately, the truth. Although there are some good people that wouldn't do that, I would imagine that most lame duck politican's will make voting decisions based on how much they can get from their votes.

Too often in politics, politicians avoid taking tough decisions until the election is safely out of the way. In this case, passing a bill extending the tax cuts except for those at the top of the income scale should be a no-brainer - it would help rally the Dem base and would also put the Republicans on the spot. Howeever, it has been the case too often that the Dems are divided - and that is fatal, particularly in the Senate when you need a supermajority. The blue dogs in the house, frightened that they won't get reelected in November, balk, the Dems are split and hence I think this is the reason why they have delayed putting the tax cuts to a vote until after the elections

I agree and I believe that if they want any chance of re election, they should do the job they were sent to do!
