Who can tell me why every student in every grade have to study English ?

That is true that students in China are paying more and more attention in learning English.Their primary goal is to pass exams ,especially the college Entrance Examination,English weighs a lot in it.As we all know,this exam is very important in a student's study life and the future in China.Next, as the communication among the whole world has been more and more strengthen and English is now the most powerful language in the world, sometimes we need to use it in our future career(Although the chance is not so large).Also,if we want to do some study in a certain field,the English materials are important.So I think for someone it is important to learn English, but not for all.

Learning English is such a "must". In my opinion, it is a universal language everyone must learn. A language barrier can sometimes hinder a person's overall outlook and cannot build a person's confidence. Communication is an important matter to consider in our everyday life. Whether we accept it or not, the English language is universal.

Well, since I am an English Literature and Language major, I will tell you "why?" First of all, there are there are 53 countries that speak English (http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/93121?ref=W_Ask&utm_source=Ask) around the world. English is a central language according to wikipedia.org and several other languages. The language originated with Old English which began as early as the 5th century, and originated as a Germanic Language. Then after the Norman invasion in 1066 CE, the English began another transformation into Middle English (read the Middle English version of "The Canterbury Tales" by Geoffry Chaucer to see what Middle English was like), then around the 1500s, the switch to Modern English began. William Shakespeare is of course one of the first known Modern English writers (notice how I said "first known"). Well, why is this all important? English is like Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and French. There are many people who speak these languages and there is a market for these languages, and in order to communicate with the rest of the world, you should know English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and French. Another thing, most of the (and I quote) "great literature" in the world (remember this is only what I hear from other English and Language majors) comes from the English Language. Seriously, think about this for a moment: Chaucer, Shakespeare, the Classics, the Romantics, the Victorians, and so on, these works of literature all come from the English Language. You talk to any English Language major and they will tell you that English is a language that you want to learn and master as much as humanly possible.

I was not in China, but in Peru and I also had to study English! It was not easy, but I am glad I studied it, as it opened many doors for me! But I reckon that now that China is growing and becoming more successful, it is the turn for people in other countries to learn Chinese! Why should we expect the Chinese to learn English if in the same measure, we don't try to learn Chinese as well?

I remember many years ago when I was in school reading that in China students are required to learn to speak English. I think its very important because so many people come to the United States or interact in important ways with people in the United States and its very important if people from other countries want to get in touch with people in the United States that they learn to speak english. I am sure you are probably young and do not realize why you need to learn english so much. You enlish sounds ok to me. You are typing on mylot. If you had not been taught english at school you would have very little you could do online as most sites are in english. You would never be able to be a member of mylot or understand anything that is written on here if you had not been taught english.

English is an international language which is extremely useful in almost every part of the world and you will find that in whatever business you will be in when you leave school it will be helpful to have knowledge of the English. This is probably the reason most students are required to learn it. I have learnt that no matter where I have been in the world the fact that I speak English has always been helpful.

well, English is a requisite when you wanted to work abroad or deal with business people from different countries. it is a vernacular that has to be learned because is an international language. i think we can choose to learn or not. chinese language is also a must in some Chinese companies here in the Philippines. applicants or candidates with some knowledge in the language is preferred. you can treat the English language like that.

English, is an international language that use by businesses. This language also used to communicate in the outside world if your not familiar for the language in which people in that country being used... There are many reason for us now to learn English. If we want top explore in other side of the world or make business to other countries other than US... If you want to go to Europe, you need to learn basic English. So, you understand what people say into you...Even if you go anywhere in Russia, if you know how to speak English...you can communicate with people there because they too...learn English... No way?! That's pretty interesting to know..It's like here in the US...spanish has become almost a necessity...and it's not our country's language. You call an 1-800 number to hear "For english press one"..then it goes straight to spanish. I can't believe that it would be mandated for every student in every grade.

I am answering this discussion from my scenario and feel that it's similar in your country as well. My mother tounge is HINDI and working in software Industry which is not in HINDI so to work on global projects and earn money, have a good growth, career, we need to know english which is international language. Most of the work we do is for international community and not for the domestic customers so will have to learn english.

English is the global language which all of us are supposed to know if we want to be successful in life. In our country, English is the medium of instruction, so in order to do well in school, one has to know English well enough to understand the lessons.

As a student also comes from China, I held the same opinion as you: Why should we all command the other nation's language? Is it necessary for English to be a main subject throughout the whole educational systems in China? But now I think the answer is a yes. We do have lots of reasons to learn it, mostly due to the globalization and the high-speed development of society. Everyone will get in touch with the ourside world, and it's hard to imagine that we can live a high-quality life without knowledge of English. What's more, I think the proper second language study is a good way to know our mother tongue. As the form of language represents the form of living, by contrast and comparation, we will get better understanding the Chinese culture and linguistic system. You'll find a lot of fun with it. Consider this, and maybe what we need is to set an positive attitude as well as a new conception toward English learning. The problem lying in it is that we think learning is test-oriented, rather than use-oriented. Learning, especially language learning, is and should be performed in the daily life. Students will command when they find it is useful and interesting. To achieve this pattern of studying, we need the effort from both students themselves as well as teachers and schools.

see English is an international language which we have to study to compete with our life..see if you don't study English then how can you study science or maths or social or any other subject so English is really very important..

its the same in our country since its the second language used here. i guess its not because you just need to graduate or go up another level in study that is why it is being taught in school. i think it is taught since its the major language of the world and so that the students won't be left behind. you will find it useful almost everyday in your life specially here in our country since most of our mediums are in English.

i won't tell you why you have to learn english but i know that it is important for us to learn second language.it doesn't matter which language as it is based on how much important the language used in our country.learn second language or more is a fun and exciting activity.if we do like to learn carry on if we are not then we don't have to~
