The Colors of Autumn.......why????

Where I live, in the Autumn the leaves of some trees change color, they become bright yellow, red, orange, brown and sometimes purple. It is beautiful to see and many people over the years have taken photographs of the change and painted many beautiful pictures. After they change color of course they fall to the ground and this is beautiful to see as well. The autumn winds swirl those leaves around and blows them all over the place and makes a lot of work for some. I have always loved this time of year. I am a curious person though and seldom is satisfied just knowing that something happens but also wants to know how. Do you know why the leaves change color like that? Can you tell me what causes those brillant colors?

WE have a weather man who is also a science teacher. Leaves make chlorphil which is green for the sunshine. Sunshine and chlorophil work together during the warmer months in plants. As it gets colder and less sunshine, the plants produce less and less chlorophil to prepare for winter. Once the green color is gone,we see the true color of the leaves (at least that's my understanding of what he said). Not all the colors are brilliant. Oaks are usually a brownish to auburn.

Oh, I see must be the cold temperatures start the process of change, that makes sense. The leaves fall and the tree goes dormant for the winter, which is good as there isn't much in the line of food for it if it depends on sunshine. Yes they are browns and dull until you mix them with the colors of red, yellow and orange.

It is a feeling of warmth, almost like people we are born, we blossom and then we die. Pretty much like the leaves, some of us are born become either nice, warm and kind and saddens us that we then passed on. Fall is my favorite time of year, not hot, not cold sort of in-between as warmth.

Yes, I like that workinggurl, we are like the tree. Fall is my favorite season too, nice to be outdoors. :)

My students just went on a field trip with a naturalist. The green that we see masks the real color of the leaf. As the leaves die off to save the tree during winter, it stops producing chlorphyll.

Oh, so the green is really behind the change. That makes sense. Thanks for your response.
