It is possible to replace the motherboard. It can't be fixed by anybody but a specialist, but it can be replaced. It's cheaper than a new computer, but not by much. Go ahead and treat yourself to a new computer. I have three extra working machines. I would sell you one cheap if you lived close by. Shipping is expensive, so you are probably better off finding one locally.

Yes, that is a good deal. If he really can save your personal stuff, it's worth it. I lost everything once upon a time, and I promise it did not make me happy. Now I use an external hard drive to back up everything.

I don't really like eMachines because of the quality of the newer builds. Don't get me wrong, we still own one that we bought in 03, but... idk, in the last few years their quality has gone to crap, in my opinion. We got my mom a desktop pc in 08, and for some reason or other, I have lost count of how many times we've had to replace the power supply. We've necer had a mother board issue with them though :/ Anyway, five years isn't at all young for a computer, at least in my house. Think of it this way: Your comp lived through XP, Vista AND Windows 7... Lived through all those update bugs, everything. That's not bad at all.
