It is alarming to see high rate of road accidents as a result of drivers talking while driving. Drivers did not take into consideration the risk involved when their concentration are distructed while on their mobile phones. The recent research has estimated 16,000 deaths from 2001 to 2007. http://sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/Talking-to-death-texts-phones-rb-4239420383.html?x=0
In Malaysia it has become a road offense to use cell phones while driving. But drivers are undeterred by the penalty imposed on them when caught talking on their mobile phones behind the wheels. The roads have become the deathbeds as a result of these reckless drivers who still prioritize their mobile phones over the safety of other road users. Even when you think you are a careful driver but accidents happen when others don't observe the road safety rules. Do you agree that cell phones be banned while driving?

Hiya zandi,
A Driver was coming up on the right hand side of us from out of a side Road and he had his Mobile Phone stuck right to his ear and he was so busy talking away and going so fast that we had to swerve right over the other side almost. He was heading straight for us. I told my Husband "watch out" because he could not see him as well as me as it´s one of those Roads that come out of an Urbanization.
He just stared at us and I just looked at him and turned away.
I feel I saved us from a nasty crash and him as well yet he was still with his Phone in his ear gabbling away.
Mobile Phones are not to be used here either but they still do and the fines are heavy.
We were lucky as the other Driver was indeed very careless in his attitude and attention to the Traffic on the Road.

Hiya zandi,
Oh I did thank my lucky stars believe me I did. Dangerous times we live in. No sooner we were out on the Motorway a Porsche came belting past us at over 230 kilometers an hour.
He was not going to hit us but we thought heaven help him if the Police catch him. It carries a Jail Sentence now.
Very nice Porsche though beautiful white colour and of course very noisy.

It has been, here, and is in a lot of US states. You can still talk on the phone if you have a bluetooth device however, where you don't need to use your hands or a headset, so you can just talk, same as you'd talk to someone sitting beside you in the car.

Well, yes, but if that's the case then they'd have to make it illegal for people to talk while they drive with other people in the car with them, since that's talking as well. Or singing along to music.

Hello my friend zandi458 Ji,
So nice of you for starting such discussion, it has been banned here, but no one takes care of that. Till awareness is craeted , nothing would happen. We should try and miimise the use of cell phones to bare minmum, but then what these Cos. will do, who want maximum SMS etc to earn money. Take care.
May God bless You and have a great time.

I think, the cell phone should be strictly banned while driving ot moving through the way. Recently among few unfortunate people, two teenager girls lost their lives in my surroundings. They were in the first year of their degree college and they were passing unmindfully by talking with their cell phone through the railway track while the train came and hit them from the back. Probably they did not hear the coming sound of that train or may be they never had heard the whistle of that train. Anyway, they had given their life before their new life has to be started. Very unfortunate and sad to hear this news. Like this instances there are several mishaps in the previous times also but till now few people do not care of their life by using the cell phones in transit or while they are driving.
If any phone call comes in a sudden, the people should stop at the side of the road, power off their vehicle and then only they should attend the phone call. Because life is more and more precious than a particular cell phone or a phone call at any cost. I request to all my friends here and outside Mylot that be careful of your valuable life. This beautiful life cannot be compared with any cost of any mundane realities. Life never comes twice.

Hiya zandi,
Have seen at least two People crossing the Crossings with the Mobile Phone in their Ear. They do not bother to look if anyone is stopping for them they just stroll across the Road. Just as bad are the Runners that run straight in front of the Car with their earphones on they just don´t look anywhere except straight in front. We narrowly missed one today who shot across the Road like a Gazelle. Very fast Runner indeed but a Car could actually knock him down.

Yes, I strongly believe that talking on the cell phone while driving most definitely should be banned. Where I live there have been so many accidents caused by such carelessness. People who want to talk on cell phones when driving need to use common sense, and realize how dangerous it is not only to themselves, but they jeopardize the lives of others.

Definitely! In Australia it is against the law to have a mobile phone in your hand while driving. The only time you are allowed to talk on the phone in a vehicle is when the car is legally parked, the engine is off and the handbrake is on otherwise there is a hefty fine. It is a law I agree with for sure but sadly I still see people using their phones while driving and taking the chance of either getting caught or having an accident and hurting or killing an innocent bystander! I turn the phone off when I am driving so that I will not be distracted by it ringing or be tempted to reach for it. Distractions like that are killers in cars on the road.

Hi Zandi, long time i didn't join in your discussion. Yes, it's true that the government should banned drivers from using their cell phone while driving on the road. I bring my cell phone with me whenever i am out from my home. But, while driving, i never answer my phone although it's ringing. I always trying my best to put the safety of the people who is riding my car and also the safety of other road users. I think everyone of us should put this good practice in use now.

Talking on a cellphone when you are driving is a distraction. It is dangerous for the driver as well as everyone around them. it only takes a moment for your attention to be somewhere else if you are engaged in conversation on a cell phone. Drivers need to be aware at all times. Cell phone use should not be permitted unless drivers are not mobile. It is just safer for everyone.

Yes, of course. I had previous experiences on this - the driver of our company car using his cellphone for texting while driving. Fortunately, there were no accidents, but it was scary.

Yes, I agree that the cellphones should be banned when you are driving. It is better to focus on driving rather than talking in the phone. It is not only dangerous for yourself, but also for others. The accidents can occur when people are careless. I hope one day there will be such a rule here.
I love China

The law here prohibits using cellphone but sadly it is not strictly implemented. Many drivers are still using cellphone while driving without being apprehended. I believe it should be strictly enforced because this could really bring accident. I mean you can't talk while driving without getting distracted. It has been the cause of countless road accidents so I wonder why the government can't fully implement the law.

There might be reasons why these culprits are not brought to justice when accidents happen due to their faults. As in most cases, corruption is one factor that makes the law ineffective. It is high time that the Government law enforcers do a proper cleaning in their department to see that their personnels run a clean job without bribery.

It has been decreed that using a hand phone without the aid of a hand free device while driving or riding a motorised vehicle is forbidden. Unfortunately weak enforcement, and the attitude of the law breakers, have made the law a joke. I also feel that the punishment is not severe enough to deter law breakers.
As it is there is a lack of enforcement officers. Even with a generous hike in starting salary, many qualified citizens are shying away from the job.
There should be some changes to the punishment. The fine should be increased. Repeated offenders should have their driving licence suspended or revoked. There should be no leniency in this matter because the actual loss after an accident has a cumulative effect to the society and country.

I agree with you fully on your views. There should be no compromise when it comes to road safety. The law should be strong enough to see that drivers do not make a mockery of the law. Many drivers flout the law thus resulting in loss of of lives in road accidents caused by these unscrupulous drivers.

I absolutely agree with you here in Australia it's an offence to talk on the phone when driving...I think the best thing to do if you get a call just pull to the side of the road to answer the call...or let your voicemail pick it up...at the end of the day it's a question of common sense don't you agree?
