makes Jack a dull boy... I haven't indulged myself all that much lately, but I do really love freshly baked bread. Used to be, when I was grocery shopping, that I would check out the bakery, and pick myself up a loaf of something fresh. And then I'd eat it, plain, straight out of the bag. I remember doing that at my first house, and my cat, Pounce, who was just a kitten at the time, climbed all over me to get at that bread. I never saw a cat so crazy for bread, before or after. Anyway, I love the stuff, white, wheat, sourdough, rye, whatever, as long as it's freshly baked, and not that chock full of preservatives stuff over in the bread section. Germany was a paradise for that very reason. :D And then there are my children. "Mom, the bread has chunky things in it." "Mom, the bread tastes sweet." "Mom, the bread tastes sour." "Mom, I want white bread." "No, not buttermilk, that tastes different." Sigh... But I'll make bread connoisseurs out of them yet. They have no choice. Until they grow up and do their own shopping anyway.

You and my hubby would get along great . . . he's a bread kinda guy. He loved getting stuff from La Brea Bakery when he used to work that way - that's super fresh compared to the La Brea Bakery stuff that's sent to the supermarkets out here. One day I want to get one of those bread machines . . . we had some of that bread at my friend's bridal dinner and it was soooo good. Mmmmm - so hungry - must be near lunch time!!

I should bake some bread at home, but I have never done more than bake that frozen stuff. It's probably chock full of preservatives too.

I tried making homemade bread years ago . . . perhaps I would be a better bread baker these days (I haven't tried it). My past attempts weren't that great. I made these cute teddy bear breads (some Christmas recipe I got from a magazine). Cute - but hard as rocks (I should say boulders - they were huge). I ended up giving them to my dog - ha ha - he appreciated it!

Ugh I really do not have much to contribute here as now all I want to do is run over to the grocery store, oh darn car is in the shop, darn.. I am going to forward my address to you as I will take all the fresh baked bread none of your kiddies care to eat. As I love all fresh bakes breads, I certainly will not complain or scream.. I want BREAD, please...

It may happen. If I am buying regular loaves, son does not care for the healthy bread that I like from Sam's Club, but he loves onion buns, sourdough, and a wonderful homemade herb bread I have created here at home. I have seen kittens, especially, climb up on a counter and drag a loaf that it three times as large as they are. There is absolutely nothing as good as a savory fresh bread.

Pouncy was the one and only cat I ever had that went crazy for bread, but I'm sure she won't be the last...

I bake my own bread and buns. When I bake my own bread I make sure that it is loaded with all the nutritious ingredients minus the preservatives. Freshly baked bread is a sure winner and the aroma of hot bread from the oven always fill my kitchen.

dawn & zandi hi... Love the bread when they are just out of the oven, gives me memories when my mom used to bake them & other goodies when we got home from school... When we step into our house all that smell will grab us kids to the table, even the neighbors kids will come to our house just to taste them.... Been thinking for a while these days to bake my own, but don't know how... Thanks dawn for this discussion, really brings back the good memories of my childhood.... zandi, can I please have your recipe for baking bread, please, I never really paid attention when my mom was baking her bread... Don't know what happen to all her recipe books when she past away.... Thank you... Have a great day mylot friends...

When I manage to get down to Atlanta, we stop at a grocery store that has fresh baked bread...and I mean it is usually warm when we get it. Well one time on my trip down to Atlanta I picked up 2 loaves of french bread...nice and warm. Well we polished off one loaf before we even got home. By the time I pulled in the driveway my 14 year old complained how he was so sick. Come to find out he not only helped me eat the one loaf, he also eat the other loaf. Next trip to Atlanta...we buy 3 loaves!

Nope, nothing like it. My stupid grocery store's bakery only seems to have white bread though. Not enough variety...

I feel the same...I love bread any kind. Prefer sourdough but a good rye either grilled with something on it or plain with a slice of good cheese. I don't eat alot of bread these days as it lays right on my belly afterwards..but when I can have something a bit different I go for it. Walmart carries a nine grain that is to die for.....but hard to toast as it's so dense.

There is nothing like beautiful fresh bread from the bakery, yum! My daughter will not eat brown bread of any kind so I buy the white stuff which is fibre enriched, not the same but the next best thing! Kids should eat whatever there is in the house that is true and that’s why I never cook two meals, one for us and one for the child…No way…She just has to get used to my cooking (LOL)!

I love fresly baked bread! It reminds me of grwoing up when my grandma would bake bread! She would make it from scratch! That is by far the best bread I have ever tasted and probaly will! I bet your kids nbever had that experience! Maybe you should tell them that is how bread was made years ago! I wonder what they would say then?

I never had that experience, much less my kids. Their father's mom bakes, but not bread.

I actually don't know a lot about bread because I haven't had a lot of opportunity in my life to try a lot of fresh breads. There was a bread company here for a while that I liked to visit on a regular basis, but they've been gone for a while. So now for us it is typically whole wheat bread in our house. However, if I understand it correctly, if my husband was able to do it himself, he would have our family eating German Brochens all the time.
