algebra help

I've spent days on this problem and I can't figure it out. It's due tomorrow. I don't want the ANSWER. I just need help with trying to come up with HOW to solve it. I can't find a way. There are 2772 pages. How many times does the digit 6 appear in those pages? I'd say counting them would be faster than making an equation for it at the rate I'm going. Can anyone help me with this?
