Do you self medicate?

Some say you shouldn't, that you should always seek doctors advice before drinking any medicine. Well for me if it's a simple illness and I've already taken that medicine before, I will just self medicate, like if I have a cough or flu or some aches and pains. Others self medicate using natural herbs which infact really helps. Let's face it with the high cost of medical check up, we can just Google our illness, check our symptoms and follow the treatment. How about you, do you self medicate?

All the time. I just don't always have the money to go to the doctor or pay for prescriptions. So even though it would be best to see the doc, I often end up just taking something over the counter or trying some home remedy.

I am almost 77, haven't had a medical checkup for over 30 years, and I'm still working every nice day in the summer. I stay away for Doctor's visits because its the Dr.'s job to find a problem with your health, which he will do. I have enjoyed good health for over 30 years and I want to keep on doing it. The Doctor will tell you how to get better, but he will not tell you what to do to stay healthy. I practice healthy living and read up on alternative medicines. I take quite a few medications, and so far so good! I'm feeling good, and having fun, and have no intention of going near a Doctor.

good day to you santosmarichris,
With reference to your main topic, as to self medication, my answer is yes. As for me, there is nothing wrong to do a self medication, as long as, you know the pros & cons of taking this.
The self medication that I am doing is somehow a reflex medication. Wherein, I dont really drink a lot of medicine. If ever I dont feel well, I used to put a liniment oil on my feet, then, massage it. After the massage, I will wear a socks to prevent the cold air to enter on the feet pores. I will also rub a small amount of liniment on my arms and start to massage it slowly to release the unwanted air and tension. Lastly, I will massage my two hands, to feel more relaxed.
In addition, I also see to it that, I am taking 7 glasses of water as part of my self medication. Since, our body needs a lot of fluids especially if we dont feel well. Aside from that, I also observed an 8-hour complete sleeping cycle. As this will give more relaxation to the body to develop a strong stamina and resistance.
Thru the method that I have mentioned above, I feel more comfortable and relax rather than taking a lot of medicine which gives me a drowned feeling. And these procedure makes me well again faster.

Yes, I usually self medicate because going to hospital is too expensive here. The doctors always ask you to do a lot of unnecessary examinations. That's totally a waste of money. So if my disease is not so serious, I won't choose seeing a doctor.

There are times when I self-medicate if my condition is not that serious like a fever or colds. But I don't just take antibiotics because I'm afraid of the side effects of it. If ever my condition did not improve, then I'll try to call my doctor and schedule for my check-up.

There are lots of hypochondriacs out there who always think something is wrong with them and invest tons of money on self-medication.
I self-medicate with exercise and a healthy diet.
It's all the same really.
I say go for it and quit lettin doctors steal your time and money.

I self medicate most of the time, even when I see a doctor. If I'm sure of what's wrong with me, I research and follow guidelines for natural healing. I was told by a doctor about 15 years ago that I'd be on kidney dialysis before 10 years was up. My lab results have shown a very, very slow progression since that time. I'll probably die of old age before my kidneys give out and it's not because I take a bunch of prescription medicines, either.

I do not really get sick as I believe in prevention being better than the cure. I eat a pretty natural and healthy diet, exercise regularly and also make sure I get plenty of rest.
If I was to get sick though, then I would probably self medicate with herbs, rest and by eating as healthy as possible. If that did not work, then I would see my friend who is an Acupuncturist and Chinese Herbalist for advice.

For me it really depends on what kind of ailment I am suffering from. If I have a cold or something like that, of course I will self medicate because they are something that I've been dealing with regularly since I was a child. However, if I have something more complicated like a potential strep throat or something like that, I won't self medicate because the course of treatment can be different at different times.

I will often trying to solve my health issues on my own. Going to the doctor is a last resort. There have been times that i paid a doctor to tell me something i would have already done myself.

Friend for minor illness i always prefer home remedies, most of them are herbal usually, here the doctors fee is very high, one has to wait for hours in the clinic, so for minor illness like cold, cough, mild fever, i keep tablets at home too..
Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

Yes I do but those illness that is not so serious. I also use herbs and tea if I have a simple colds and cough. If the illness will last for three days, then this is the time I go to the doctor.

The onus is on us to continue well with what has worked well before through what has been prescribed by the health professionals. It saves time and money and perhaps lots of frustration to consult the doctors again and to be prescribed with the same. I do self medicate too.
Normally it's just as effective. But I also think sometimes that if it doesn't work the second time around then I would seek a second opinion or an alternative treatment.

Hi there! I am do self medicate but before doing so I would call up our co-worker who is a doctor and ask for her advise though I don't necessarily go to her and have myself checked. Sometimes when i have simple cough, colds and flu I would simply ask her recommendation for the best medicine I could get to treat/medicate whatever it is that i am suffering from. However, when I think my sickness is no longer ordinary I would normally seek medical assistance/intervention and have my self checked and wait for the prescription before I take in any medicines. I don't like medicines that's why I am not what they call "trigger happy"... It takes a serious reason before I buy medicines especially high dosage ones. Thanks. Have a good day and happy mylotting.

Hi! Yes i do for simple illnesses but for other illnesses i am not sure of, i usually consult a doctor. There are illnesses that we could not identify except by submitting ourselves to different diagnostic procedures and that is the time that i consult a doctor. For me that happens very seldom because i am a nurse and i usually know the medicine i have to take for simple illnesses. I also suggest that we should always consult a doctor so that we are safe.

I self Medicate because my wife and I are both physicians.. I think you shouldn't .. self medication may make your condition worse by taking the wrong medicine... or your ailment might complicate further if the root cause is left untreated. A thing about herbal medications... They are not always effective and they are not always cheap, Please compare them to the real thing before buying... buying a wrong medicine is a waste of money.

A sister of my wife was involved in an accident.
Due to the advice from her friend, she bought some Chinese herb and ate.
After eating the first time, she felt very bad.
Her head was so pain and almost made her crashing into the wall.
We quickly sent her to hospital.
She was recovered after an injection.

It is alright to self medicate if it is just a common cold, fever or headache. I usually do that. But when the same sickness recurs in such a short time, then I suggest you go to a physician to really diagnose what is wrong with your body.
