What's the most common surname in your country?

Philippines

Common surnames here are Abad, Bautista, Cabatingan, Cabrera, de la Cruz, Cruz, Diaz, Domingo,Evangelista, Fajardo, Garcia, Hernandez, Jacinto, Mendoza, de Leon, Lopez, Legaspi/Legazpi, Padilla, Ramos, Reyes, Sanchez, Santos, Tejada, Torres, Villanueva, Yap, Zamora. There's a list actually but more often, these names are used when it comes to fictional characters. The most popular example would be Juan de la Cruz. Usually, of Spanish decent and Chinese because of our history with them. My surname is not that common but here in my area, particularly Cebu, there are quite a lot. Once it's being heard, I am often asked like, "Hey, do you know (name of the person with the same surname as I have)?" . It's a little funny but there are times where it's coincidental that I really know the person. Is your surname common in your country? Do share your stories my friends. =)

Yeah, if you live in the United States of America, we such a diverse mixed group of people that there isn't really standard surnames around here. I could tell you that Smith, Jones, Edwards, Watson, Wells, Miller, Wilson, Lee, Garcia and Yang are the most popular surnames, but that wouldn't be doing it justice because that only be about less than one percent (1%) of all of the surnames in the United States.

Well, here in the U.S., we have people from across the globe living here, and some people have more then one surname, some people have more than one name. Yes, Yang, I think, is Chinese. Anyway, like I said, in America, there really isn't a popular surname.

hi totallyundecided I am from the US and live in California. the most common surnames, Smith, Jones,Clark, Brown, Johnson,Peterson, we are the melting pot of the world. My maiden name is horribly common , Clark and I found out that it can get really messed up when doing genealogy on my Clark family as so many people here in the US are looking for their Clark ancestors too and a lot of them come up with some of the given names of myown Clark family. For ex I was looking for thomas c clark and I think one hundred or more people were looking for their gr grandfather t homas C clark too.,But just three actually did have my Thomas C clark as a relative too. then I found I have cousins I did not know I had, so much fun really finding all my real cousins. The surname of my husband Garland Hatley is more common than you would expect., there are singing groups, bands, other organizations with the last name Hatley and none are related. but go to washington State and in a few miles there are all the kin of my deceased Husband. lol

Hi, Hatley. My grandma who's also in San Francisco that she has a neighbor who's last name was Johnson. And Johnson is also a popular brand for a baby powder. My other grandma, gram's sister, had this plan of tracing our family tree because in our area here, there are a lot of us who have the same surnames yet we're not related so she just wants to find out. It's amazing sometimes how we can meet our long lost relatives. Hi, bing, yeah. Most of the surnames are also names. But I think it only applies there in the US.

oh, hello Kabayan.:) I am from Aklan, a province with less populace compared to other provinces. My surname is quite familiar in our town because maybe other members of my family are politicians there and my elders earned our towns mate respects. But given they are not politicians or not too popular, i'd say my surname is not common. It has a spanish origin and it sounds spanish, too. We are only few in our town or province with that surname.:)

Hiya TD, Most common Surnames in this Country for example are Gonzalez, Perez, Lopez, Rodriguez and Munoz actually that one sounds like this Munyoz but I can´t put that in here as you already know. Rodriguez has an accent on the I but not in English. Those are the most common Surnames there are many others but you could fill a whole Library with them.

Hiya TTD, You´ve got it. Cabrera is also quite common like Garcia as well and Hernandez I like the first name Hernan that is a nice first name. Quite an old fashioned one that comes from the Middle Ages I think. We could go on forever. In this side of the Country the surname are of Basque origen like Goni, Basagoiti, Goicoechea, Uranga but to me they are all alike.

I'm from China and live in Shanghai. In China, the most common surnames are: Zhao, Li, Wang, Zhang, Liu, Chen…… Sometimes the spelling of them are different in Taiwan, Hongkong and China mainland. For example, Cai is spelled as "Tsai" in Taiwan, and Zhang is "Chang" in Hongkong. China is a country with a long history of ancient civilization. Theoretically speaking every surname has its source. The history and reality of 643 Chinese surnames can be found i the comprehensive family tree. We can get surnames's source, history and route of acivities of our ancestor in "A collection Surname", that Chinese called "Bai Jia Xing".

Chen and Chang - i do hear them in shows and movies. But I love how it has evolved since most of your surnames has a source. So it would be good to trace them and know your ancestors in the past. It will be a great adventure.

In my place we could identify the origin of a person by his surname. In one municipality all that live there has a surname that begins with letter F, in another, all of them begins with letter R and in the other all begins with letter M. Maybe that was really intended when our place was invaded by Spaniards.
