By the way, I spent ages on this site and you probably will too!

I enjoyed seeing where certain countries stood. Rather than moving to Iceland, I think I'd prefer Ireland!!! The Irish know how to have a good time & they have beautiful countryside!!! My family's heritage is part Irish & I think it would be interesting to trace back my family tree!!! That plus Ireland was #6 on the list whereas the good old USA was #96; so I'd be improving my peacefulness!!!

I seriously doubt that I'll ever go there; but, if I do, I'll be in touch for some practical pointers!!! My brother was sent there by his work & he just LOVED it!!! I don't travel anywhere without a ton of clothes for ALL kinds of weather. That's why I'll probably never get there. The airlines would make a fortune off my luggage alone!!!

I've been to Dublin and surrounding areas in southern Ireland so I can give you some advice about something if you're ever over there.
PLEASE TAKE WARM CLOTHING! Me and Mum went in August 2005 and it was freezing. Silly me didn't even take ANY long-sleeved clothing so, not suprisingly, I caught a very nasty cold whilst over there.
The people are lovely though. I'd definitely go back again but plan it a bit better than the last trip!

Sounds great! It is a pity that Iceland is in so much trouble financially though. That might put a few people off moving there! I think I would rather move to New Zealand. Not quite as cold as Iceland, but still very spectacular and a lot closer for me. I was disappointed to see Australia down at number 26. There was a time when we would have been at or near the top of that list. Those day are gone as we become more and more Americanised!

Are Australians the friendliest? Surely they're the friendliest?

It is fascinating to find out Iceland is the most world's most peaceful place. It doesn't surprise me to hear that all the countries in Scandinavia are peaceful and near to the top of the list. I worked in Finland when I was a Children's nanny when I was 18 years old. The family had three houses: a town house, a farm house in the countryside and a lakeside log cabin. We could leave the front door open and nobody or anything would come to any harm. We cycled to the motorway and left our bikes there. Of course they were still there when we got back. These Scandinavian countries have low populations and well behaved citizens. I think that the weather in Iceland would be too cold for me. I would like the beautiful landscape and the friendly people for a trip there in the height of summer.

Is there anywhere you haven't travelled to my friend? You sure get around but it's great having your insight into Scandinavian countries, as you have been there. Have you ever been to Denmark? That country is definitely high on my list of places to visit.

They're too busy fighting off volcanic eruptions and keeping warm to get involved in wars...

To be honest, I don't think this has anything to do with wars. My interpretation of a peaceful nation is of the people living there..whether or not they are killing each other on a daily basis.

I haven't checked out the link yet but my first thought is that there is no way that I would live anywhere that is so cold. Wasn't there some sort of huge financial upheaval there as well within the past year? The details are fuzzy but I think that it had something to do with the state bank being insolvent or something of that sort.

The discussion was about how peaceful the place was, not its financial situation. Let's face it, most countries are affected by this, not just Iceland.
The "peaceful" thing comes from the fact that they don't go around killing one another.

That is an interesting site.Seems the Scandinavian countries are the ones to move to. Ireland is number 6 as the most peaceful, not bad but I guess that would have to do with our neutrality. I thought the UK would have been higher up on the list though. I then checked the biggest drinkers, Ireland is number 3

My Dad swears by Guinness. I am not really that fond of it, it is an acquired taste you either like it or you don't. You know I have never been to the Guinness Estate or the Brewery I guess it is more of a tourist thing but water that looks like a pint of Guinness has me intrigued and makes me want to visit now.
The weather can be terrible here most of the time, right now we are getting lots of rain As for summer I dont remember one this year

We saw the Guinness Brewery on the coach we were on but we didn't visit it, so to speak, even though there is a free half pint glass of Guinness as a reward right at the end!

Guinness is good for you though, it's full of iron! I've been to that Guinness estate where the water looked like a pint of Guinness. If you've been there you will know what I'm on about. If not, you won't have a clue!
Great place is Ireland..but it's freezing! In summer!

I would very much like to visit Iceland. The name itself is very beautiful and unique. It promises that there will be lots of ice. I've not had the chance to go there so far. And I have not met any one from Iceland in the coubtries I have been to either.

As far as I know the population of Iceland is confined to certain areas, therefore large parts of the country are probably uninhabitable because of the terrain.

Wow the United States is number 94 on the list of the most peaceful, I'd thought it'd be higher up but I guess not.

I think Washington DC was the 5th most dangerous city in the world! That surprised me, I must say but John was telling me about some of the no-go areas in that city..he's the Fountain of Knowledge on stuff like that. I haven't a clue!

Iceland is peaceful because the people in Iceland are peaceful. Now if everyone moves to Iceland then Iceland will cease being peaceful. Overpopulation doesn't make people happy.

Firstly, let me say that I wasn't serious about everyone moving to Iceland. People who know me well on here will take that comment of mine with a pinch of salt. I was making an observation on how peaceful Iceland was because it was "top of the league" as it were. Perhaps we should all be like them rather than to move there?

Hello Janey,
The name "Iceland" sounds exciting and interesting, and i would love to visit that place too.
I could just imagine walking alone at night in the midst of nowhere and feeling safe (wow..what a peaceful life it would be)
I just wonder about the freezing cold,i hope i can survive it there
have a great weekend dear

Hi!
I believe it's a great place for woolens, so, if you find you haven't taken enough with you you could always buy a load whilst you're there.
You have a great weekend too.

I know what you mean, I went to the site and forgot I had to come back to your discussion. Very interesting, seeing that Iceland is so frigid, perhaps the frigid weather allows people to be a bit more warm with one another.

I've often wondered if they get proper summers? I know in Sweden it can be dark throughout the winter, it's that depressing but the sunny (although short) summer, makes up for it.
Iceland has some very nice hot springs that you can swim about in as well. I'd like to go in one right now actually!
Glad you liked the site.

You're right about saying Iceland is the most peaceful, but I still have no idea of moving there when chance comes. Iceland can be the most peaceful, but it is prone to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, considering its location at the middle of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Anyway, I like Iceland because of its high standard of living (all Scandinavians can die as centenarians) and its varied diet. Yet I still don't want because I've had a bad experience with volcanic eruptions in the past.

I can well understand your concerns about volcanoes, they can be frightening, especially if you live nearby.
I tell you what; Hawaii is one great big volcano but the locals seem quite happy about it..so we'll move there instead.
I could do with some sun on my back!
Welcome to MyLot!

I think they mean "peaceful" as in against every other country in the world. Whether we like it or not, many countries are volatile because they have easy access to weapons and find excuses to use them on a regular basis.
Icelanders are probably more interested in keeping warm than shooting one another.

I am not surprised to find that Iceland is the most peaceful. It has a pretty uniform population, generally all of some Scandinavian background. It is pretty isolated from other countries that might be interested in its (lack) of resources... It has a lot of cheap energy (geothermal) that can't be stolen and - honestly, only those hardy folks really want to live in that aptly named chunk of ice.
I would, however, LOVE to visit it!
