I watch shows like Supernatural, Haven and several others. I was just wondering how these people make a living? On Haven the main character told her boss last week that she was staying in Haven and to heck with her job. On Supernatural they traveled all over the country, payed for gas in a gas gussler, etc. how was this funded? Any ideas? Can you think of other shows that the characters don't seem to have a means of making money?

That's TV for ya! And here we thought is was only use soapers(daytime soap operas) that thought this kind of thing! All these characters life high on the hog, new clothes constantly, eating out..etc etc...yet none of them either have a job or show up to it every day! But how they earn their money isn't the point of the show so that'd be boring to watch them do their desk work on the show! But still...it just gets kind of annoying that they all have so much....yet never work!

And they are always rich families...never unemployed and struggling. And if they are...they still have money for new clothes and all!

They won the lottery. They received an inheritance. They have a trust fund with a healthy monthly allowance. I don't know.

They are unrealistic aren't they? LOL...I haven't thought about it but there are a lot of shows where people are traveling around and never have any means. I wish I knew their secret.

I had the same thought while being addicted to Enid Blyton's books while I was a youngster. These characters have picnics, eat a lot in their adventures, yet there is no mention of a toilet in entire book! Sorry, I was not of the age where I had enough money to bother about it! Most of the shows in India are the same. There is a large family having a palatial bungalow of a home, people talk of "Projects" worth billions, and yet everybody is in the living room for the entire show! When and how they got this project is beyond me! I think the entire point of a show is to draw our imagination to the fantasy of a worry free life. Had they shown the nitty gritty of normal life, the show would be boring. There's no point in looking for a fact in the fiction. Just forget the logic and let your imagination be taken over!

A worry-free life? What a concept, huh? I am just too curious about things to just let the fiction take over. I used to go to movies with this one friend of mine and after the movie we would cratique it. These same time of questions would come up.

interesting question - haven't really thought about it. perhaps the characters are into something illegal that's why they have the money, LOL.. writers should make better characterizations including the characters' job or source of living.

The only time you'll ever see characters on tv or movies worry about how to pay for things is if it's part of the storyline. It's not that the writers are out of touch, or are so rich they never think about money. It's more about having a limited amount of time to develop storyline, that most everyday things just aren't important enough to mention. When you're watching tv or a movie remember, everything mentioned has to do with moving the story along. If it doesn't, even if it was part of the original filming, it will get cut by the final edit.
