Not really any suggestions on how to live cheaper.
we all have to consider we can live on less if we have to . I know my hubby and I are fighting to stay afloat and we do better than most....
Just tighten the belt and pay attention to what you buy and always remember there is going to be a problem to crop up when you least expect it..
God bless,

I'm not sure that it is a question of living extravagantly. Catastrophic insurance coverage for me is $300 per monthy. Husband is on Medicare but prescriptions run approximately $325 per month. We own our home but are having great difficulty surviving on the money that we have left. Husband had a stroke and suffered a traumatic brain injury so he requires 24/7 supervision. That doesn't allow me to go back to work. Thanks for your help.

Hmm?strange how these discussions get out of whack...and I really thought I'd answered this one..
We too own our own home and my hubby too has been stricken with ALS. Tho it might be considered "lucky" he is veteran, our ins. co pays the Veterans Administration or we'd never be able to handle his medication.
I dont have the problem of 24/7 care of him as he is fairly mobile.
I don't work. I just had open heart surgery and Thank God we have been paying blue cross blue shield all these years. Hubby retired from the Navy years ago and went into the postal business of delivering mail and now I am thankful for this ins.
Still the rental rates you talk about in other countries is ridiculous.
My sympathies to both of you.
God bless

I am not really sure what to suggest to be honest. There's a lot that you'd have to consider as one person had said before. I would probably say maybe the Netherlands? I am not sure if they speak english or not but I have a friend from Belgium who is very intelligent and speaks french and english.

I'm wondering if when you talk about many of the countries in Europe if they aren't bilingual. I have a good friend who is from Germany and before she came here forty years ago, English was the traditional business language. Not sure if things are still the same. She worked as a translator, translating German documents into English.

hi LaurenInLa oh my you too my son keeps saying we cannot afford t o live here but at ther same token neither can we afford to move. so for us right now we are stuck living in Sousthern California but at least he now has a job. we are hoping we can afford a two bedroom apt again but we are now trying to save u p some money first.I do not think there is any country thats going to be all of what any of us want but the US is huge so how about moving to a state where the rent is a lot lower and there are still jobs that pay decently. try the midwest or n or s Dakota winters are dreadful but living is cheaper.

I just got out of Southern California. Housing, taxes and the overall cost of living are ridiculously high there. We lived and worked there for 38 years and after all of that time, we cannot afford to live there. I was raised in the Midwest and can't envision being there again. The only place in the U.S, that is on our list is Florida but I've read (not researched yet) that many recent tax laws are making it difficult for retirees to live there.

Most of people from my country go to Ireland or The UK, well, it's not like cheaply, but you get paid more for job then it becomes cheap, but if you don't find a job it will still be hard.

I know that the UK is out of my price range. Haven't checked out Ireland though. My husband is sick and I am his sole caregiver so unfortunately working is out of the question for me. I have to finda place where I can live on our retirement income. Thanks for the suggestions.

Cheap leaving and stable government, this is a difficult combination. I've heard that Thailand is a very cheap place to visit but how about to live there? My country is Bulgaria. The life here is a lot cheaper than in the US but maybe you'll find it difficult to adapt. We have beautiful villages in the mountains. In the recent years families from England bought houses there for the amazement of the local people.

Thailand is definitely an option. One of the previous posters from teh UK did suggest the Black Sea area of Bulgaria. Can one survive speaking English there?

Well, Costa Rica and Thailand are great places to live.
I don't know if they speak English there, but it's definitely better than busy cities.
You won't have all the luxuries, but then again, we only want them because we a used to them.
Have a good day.

Of course they are many back to the stone age or past civilization it could be very peaceful and cheap to live though lot of comfort bring by technology is likely missing so eventually if you are a city person living in a country could be compare to discovery channel description of being part of lonely planet. But if you really yearn to live cheaply even in your own country you could find a simple rural place you could stay by just living simple and with absence of extravagance. hope you could find soon..

You can live here in the Philippines. We do not have a high standard of living here.

Try Philippines. I'd definitely recommend Baguio, a city located in the northern part, considered highlands. Very nice weather. Cost of living is cheap but that will depend on your lifestyle. Exotic natural panoramic views. Rich cultural heritage. Hospital & universities around the city. And lots of Koreans in need of English tutors.
