I've just watched my first Studio Ghibli films, borrowed from a friend who said i'd really appreciate the detail of the animation and fantastical stories. She's given me Grave of the Fireflies and Howl's Moving Castle. Grave of the Fireflies is very powerful and I was really moved. Plus it's not a dubbed version which is even better. Shown from what we wouldv'e called the enemys side, to me it's just the side that gets ignored too often, the human side. I'd totally recommend it to anybody who is bored of Hollywood happy endings. In your opinion is there another 'must see' that I can get hold of and what I can expect?

Studio Ghibli films are excellent must-sees! If you haven't watched it already, I highly recommend Spirited Away; or if you prefer watching these films in Japanese, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Sen and Chihiro's Spirited Away). It's a superb fantasy film, in which a ten year old girl wanders into a world of fantasy; witches, monsters, etc. It has a very impressive storyline, and I love it. Once again, highly recommended, if you haven't seen it already.

I'd honestly recommend any movie made by Studio Ghibli. All of their works are fantastic and amazing in their own ways. My first recommendation would always be Princess Mononoke since I have a really soft spot for this film. It was one of the first anime movies I ever watched and the reason why I became interested in anime. The story's setting is based on ancient Japan and the gist of it is about the struggle between man and nature. The movie can be a bit violent but well worth it. Another would be Spirited Away. The story is kind of reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland in a way. It's about a spoiled child getting sucked into this fantasy world and she must find a way to go home.

My favorites of Studio Ghibli are "Spirited Away", "Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind", "Castle in the Sky", and "Ponyo". There are loads of others that I haven't seen or just didn't really enjoy as much that I know others would recommend like "Kiki's Delivery Service", "My Neighbor Totoro", and "Princess Mononoke".
