The Elevator Accident: seven people injured.....

Philippines
October 4, 2010 5:51am CST
The one thing that I feared the most...finally Happened.. Just recently, an elevator in a Condominium building somewhere in Quezon City went screwed after lowering down the 5th floor. coming from the nine floor, it went smoothly until it reaches the 5th floor. I don't think the rope from that Elevator won't fall down, unless the management was lacking utilities. i think it's old, if it's new, then it could have stop with it's breaks when the rope went loose. I haven't been going out for atleast a while. but from this day fourth, i would look closely on the elevators before i go in. otherwise, just take the stairs, there's no harm done and it's a good exercise. How can you avoid a possible Elevator Fall Down...

My goodness I can’t believe that it happened! I have often had thoughts of the elevator I am travelling in and console myself with the idea that they are always thoroughly checked and nothing can ever go wrong...Until I read your discussion that is! I am relieved no one was killed! I will reconsider my next elevator ride I think...

It's always better to take the stairs instead of the elevator unless of course you need to go to the higher floors. It's difficult to tell by just looking whether the elevator is safe or not. The cables holding the elevators should be regularly maintained because the up and down motion causes stress on the cable. It's the only thing that will ensure safety but a lot of building administrators skimp on this service thus leaving the place wide open to an accident.

Hello advocate, well, there was this elevator in a hospital that freaked me up because it's almost 70's old. i came back there years later, that's when i realized they replaced it with the new ones. i believe they got lazy with this kind of maintenance.

this is one of the things that i fear most too. that's why i am so afraid of riding the elevator when getting to my auntie's condo unit in libis. plus the fact that i have fear of heights too. imagine 32 floors up and down, oh my. anyway at least the building was new so i guess the elevators were in real good condition. i suggest also those who owns buildings with elevators to keep and maintain closely their utilities because accident can happen anytime and anywhere with anyone. i think i'll always pray when riding the elevator from now on. happy mylotting!

Hello Angel Kaycee, Lucky for them that it went wrong at the 5th floor, what more if it happen on the 32nd floor, there's noy way those people could have survived.that's right, you should pray while riding the elevator.

I used to believe that getting trapped during brownout is the worst that could happen to me inside the elevator. This is the first time I realized that something even worse could possibly happen. It could fall at anytime, my goodness! How could the Building Administration overlooked this fact? Who are responsible for the construction of that elevator? They must be answerable to all this. Now I developed some kind of fear. I don't feel like using the elevator anymore in whatever circumstance. Imagine that sometimes there are people who do not want to use the stairs even if going to the second floor only. People always prefer to use the elevator. Now I think more people will use stairs more often especially if it is only up to second or third floor. But how about if we would go up to the highest floor of the building like 11th or 12th floor of even higher? Nhahh! I'm glad I don't live in a condominium and I'm glad I'm having office at the 3rd floor of our building. I always take the stairways anyway because I found it a good exercise. Now this incident should prompt all building owners to have regular elevator check up and maintenance. This accident should never happen again.

well this happened to me once and the reason why i have a little phobia with elevators. but it only dropped 2-3 floors and no one was hurt. well i have seen malls/buildings that havent changed their elevator even if its older than most of the residents there.

I guess we just have to cross our fingers and hope that what happened to them won't happen to us. Our office is located at the pent house but this building is a very old one. I think this was constructed in the early seventees. The evelatots are old too, in fact there had been several instances where it stopped in the mid floors and the unlucky ones have to crawl just to get out.

Hello ybong, let's just check the elevators just in case we ran into one. well, they should have replaced the elevators, knowing it can posed dangers to people who go inside of it. wow, that's really scary, what if the crawling guy got his body sliced if the elevator fell down.

hi letran oh thats just horrible, how could they be so lax in maintaining the ropes and such. thats criminal. We have two here one much larger thatn the other and every so often they have to be repaired. I guess it would not be so bad an accident if something let go as its only two stories here. but still a lot of us here are from 60 to 90 so if somethingfrayed on these we could get hurt too. I cannot easily take the stairs as I have one leg in a brace making it hard to climb up and down. I guess its good that they do maintain these in a retirement center. Do be careful Letran and take the stairs if need be.-

Hello Hatley, The rope is just part of the problem. i think either the breaks didn't work or there was no breaks in the elevators at all. I'll take the stairs if it's not needed to be. yes, just imagine having that problem in your place, that's managements liability.

I am always saddened when I hear news about the accident. That may be, accidents happen because the conditions of old elevator rope. Hopefully can soon be overcome, and elevator accidents do not happen again.

Hi LetranKnight! Where exactly is this? I live in Quezon City and gosh I got scared! I mean, one can never totally avoid accident like that. We can never predict when will it happen! When an elevator door opens, you will never know if it will break down seconds after you come in, right? I always have this fear of being trapped in an elevator. But I really wish I will not experience that! Who would want that, anyway? Nobody does. I often go to a condo and elecators are really scary!

Hello Jheiem, well, i hope this serve as a warning to you. check the elevator for it's features, if the elevators aren't new then, you should think twice about going into one.

I'm sorry this happened. It would be scary if an elevator stuck with you. I live in a small town, though, and I don't have to deal with elevators much. Yes, I agree. It would be better exercise to take the stairs. However, if you have bad knees like some elderly people do, it's better to take the elevator.

Yes, I agree. It's the owners and managers who should make sure that the elevators are working properly. My parents and I were on vacation in Florida one time and I took the elevator for some reason. I was going downstairs but I don't remember why. Anyway, the elevator stuck with me for a few minutes. It just quit working all of a sudden and I opened the doors and I saw I was between floors. When I closed the doors and pushed the button again, it worked. That elevator was pretty slow, anyway. I think they all get slow the older and more used they get.

Hello Cyrus, My mom is kinda old so she can't take the stairs. but when ever i come with her. i always do my best to accompany her specially when it comes to elevators.it's the ownder and the managements job to take care of these problems so that people's lives won't be in jeopardy.

Hello letran, I am also afraid when riding an elevator esp with old buildings. It creeps me and i hate riding alone either, better wait for a company or take the stairs if it is not up to 10th floor. I hope the building maintenance officer will always check elevators, before something happened (usually they make moves after an accident..so bad )

Hello Jaiho, Yes, it is really a problem. the Management probably lacked maintaining those elevators. probably didn't have breaks, that fell down too easily. they should replace the elevators with breaks once the ropes had been cut.

I have this silly fear over being trapped in an elevator, does not help since I was once trapped inside one. Each and every time I get in one I get chills down my spine and fear kicks in. As soon as I reach my floor and the doors open a huge sigh of relief is immediately immersed. Elevators are mechanical, and with all computer, technology and mechanical items in life they have a tendency to cause failure, unfortunately the accidents can and are usually fatal.

Hello Hardworkinggurl, Well, I don't get nervous when there's other people. what's really chilling was if you're alone in the elevator then a half bodied ghost gets close to you as you push the open button.this accidents won't happen if the elevators had been replaced.

Hi! I'm kinda scared riding elevators too, I'm thinking I'll get stuck there for hours or the elevator will fall down. Gosh, that's so scary. So, if I'm going into a building and I'm visiting on the 5th floor I'll just walk up the stairs, and now I will consider 2 more floors, lol. It's good exercise, anyway.

Hello SantosMarichris, The big problem is suffocation and heat.well, stairs are really a good idea just in case the elevators don't do good. unfortunately, for large and big buildings that has different level of elevators. there should be at least, a few stairs or something just in case of emergencies.
