Volunteering at Kindergarden

So, my son just started K this year... I start volunteering this week. I've wanted to become deeply involved with his school, but I always seemed to be a day late and a dollar short in the process... Well, I finally got my CORI done and back (and I'm clean!) so I met with his teacher and she is so overwhelmed and in need of a helper badly! I'm starting out 2 days a week, from 8:20 until lunchtime, in his classroom. I'm excited because I get to see exactly what goes on there. Naturally, whenever I ask him "how was school" he says "good" but he never can/will tell me what they did! Who else volunteers at their child's school? Do you think it's a benefit, being there, or a distraction to your child? Do you find the work rewarding?

Kathryn is in second grade now and it has been important for me to volunteer at her school when I could from the time that she was in kindergarten. I really like being able to get in the school and see what goes on at school and also to know her teachers and such. In fact, I was on a first name basis with their old principal and the new principal already recognizes my face. I wouldn't trade the experience of being able to volunteer at school for anything, it is as valuable for us as parents as it is for our children.

Sure, I agree... One of the benefits will be that the teachers, the staff, the adminstration will get to know me (and me them) so that communication will become easier. I can usually tell when a teacher/counselor/principal is 'handling' me as a parent... because they don't know me, they're trying to be diplomatic/polically correct/WHATEVER... I don't want to be handled, I want to be talked with, in a no BS sort of way, tell me what the issues are, (good or bad) and allow me to do the same! Actually, I'm thinking of getting involved with the PTO... First meeting next week... do you do that too? What can I expect?
