I Hate Not Having A Mouse!!!

I use a laptop computer so even if I don't have a mouse, I have the pad that I can use but I hate using the pad. It's so clumsy compared to a mouse and I have to use both hands to operate it whereas a mouse is an easy one-handed device. That said, I also hate cords so I try to have a wireless mouse, which works great except... For those of you who don't know, a wireless mouse comes with an emitter that plugs into the usb port and sends and receives signals to and from the mouse. These emitters can be fairly large, sticking out from the computer about 2 inches or more. I had bought a wireless "notebook" mouse, which had the 2 inch emitter and it worked great for about three days...until my daughter dropped my computer onto the floor, landing on the emitter! You guessed it...the emitter broke wide open. Amazingly, I was able to get it to work for a couple of weeks, duct-taping it closed. Now my emitter has died so I need a new one and am back to using the nasty pad! Now, my question is this: Is it possible to just buy a new emitter without having to buy a whole new mouse? One would think it would be. Anyone out there have some similar experiences? How did you solve the problem?

For me, a good old-fashioned wired mouse will do. I do hate the mouse pad in notebooks. I still haven't discovered the equivalent of a mouse wheel+control maneuver in a notebook mousepad. I use the mouse wheel mostly to scroll up and down documents and to zoom in and out in the work area. It is very disconcerting to hit the control key and scratch on the pad with nothing happening at all. I wonder, how to do it in a mouse pad, anybody?

LOL, really? That's one reason they should never be here or else they have a lot of explaining to do. Seriously though, maybe they should conduct surveys and be sensible about it. This whole discussions made me remember of an "innovation" that went the way of the dinosaurs. It was a keyboard with only eight or so holes in it. Inside the holes are the corresponding letters you have to press: i.e the first hole is where you insert the left little finger. Press forward for letter q, down for a, backward for z,left for caps lock, right for s and so on. What they did not foresee is that most of us mortal typist must constantly look down to see the letters on the keypad or get lost in the process. It is just a natural habit for most of us. I actually flunked my blindfolded test in keyboard operations because even though I have been typing for years, my eyes would always look down to verify that the key I wanted is still there and have not gone elsewhere. Even for the two raised bars on the f and j as homing keys, I could not help but look down on them as I type. Maybe as I advance in my typing skills, or my eyes could no longer recognize the letters, it would be high time to do touch typing with eyes on the monitor screen or on the copy board. Ironic isn't it? When folks invented the notebook pad, they must have forgotten that we have to rely on the good old trackball and optical mouse to point icons on the screen. I suggest, they should do away with the useless pad and cut down on production costs. But as you said earlier... they run their production department. Of course, they really do.

Hi there alaskanray: I see it. Manufacturers should log in here to get hints about the things they do. A while ago, during the advent of the notebook, one company actually placed a trackball on their units near the keypad. I wonder why did it didn't catch on?

I am also using a laptop and my mouse is not working anymore. For me it's still more comfortable using a mouse.... unless I use my husband's macbook. Whenever I use it, I'd rather use the pad instead of use a mouse. :)

I prefer using a wired mouse and to me it is so much easier to use that. I also hate using the pad, I can't stand using both of my hand to operate it. I tried using wireless mouse once but I felt it's kind of heavy and I wasn't really comfortable using it.

There are different models of the wireless and I have found that some feel heavier than others. The one my daughter broke the emitter to was a dream to use and I loved it. I would buy that model again in a flash. The one I bought to replace it, the buttons are harder to push on, it's bigger and a little clumsier. I much prefer the other mouse. Everyone has their druthers.

well actually i dont think you have to buy anything. actually the electronics components do not break with a little bit of soldering you will be able to work with your previous emitter or if it still dont work look the frequency of the emitter from the mouse manual or find a datasheet on net you will be able to build a new emitter by using discrete components as a hobby project and believe me it will be fun

um...you need equipment to do that, not to mention some know-how. Anyway, they don't sell the emitters alone so I had to buy a whole new mouse. What a bummer!

well you need a simple soldering iron and a solder wire nothing more. if you can do a hobby project then it is fine otherwise i am sorry you will have to buy the whole set again or this time buy a wired mouse

well, who knows. I never tried this before, but usually wireless mouse comes with the adapter as well. So, I think you should buy the whole new one, as the new wireless mouse might not be compatible with your previous adapter. I prefer non-wireless mouse rather than the wireless one. You have to change the battery of the wireless mouse whenever it runs out of energy....

This is true but I had a wired mouse and using it in bed, the wires broke inside the cord after a few weeks of use because I had to keep flipping the cord out of my way.

No, you cannot buy a separate emitter from a reputed company products..Buy the whole set or else use MOUSE WITH WIRES if you dont like the touch pads.

LOL...diff'rent strokes, I guess, eh? I don't mind a wired mouse so much if I'm at a desktop but I have to use my computer from my bed and already have enough wires trapping me when I have to get up. One more wire and I'll scream. I don't like the cords cuz they get in the way all the time!

I'm sure I'd throw the laptop if I had to use one because damned if I could figure out the mouse. It was enough of a challenge just doing the regular one on a computer with it being on the right side. I'm sure it just takes time to get used to it. Good luck to you. I'm a technotard so I guess I'm lucky I can type.

Who ever thought that a mousepad would be a good idea . I can see why they are needed on a laptop to make it a fully functional contained unit but they are the most awkward things to use. The first thing I did when I bought a laptop was to buy a mouse. I have been using wireless optical mice for years and I don't think I could use anything else now. I think you could try ebay for just just the USB emitter. As far as I know once the mouse and the emitter are form the same manufacturer they should be compatible. I have used the same Logitech emitter for both my laptop and the desk top no problem at all.

I think you should purchase a mouse for your computer. Because many times it creates problem while working on computer without mouse. So now you should purchase a good mouse for your computer. Sometimes I also try to work on computer without taking help of mouse. But I feel very problem without it. So I think mouse is an important part of a computer system.
