I mean, without books, we wouldn't learn about all that much. It allows others to record ideas, that can expand the knowledge of others. Leading to more ideas and more advances. Pretty much everything that we have today can be traced back to the invention of literature. Do you find yourselves agreeing with that statement?

The vedas the ancient Hindu religious verses were got by heart and and taught from generation to generation as there was no paper or any material to write upon. They were nearly 5000 yrs old { I am not very sure of the date}.Then they wrote on papal leaves. To tell you the truth I have in my house the Hindu Epic Ramayan written on those leaves which is more than 400 yrs old. They are so delicate to handle. If you handle them roughly. they become small pieces and some times powder. We have preserved them in a secluded place and we see them from distance only. They are texts of knowledge.Paper is comparatively of recent invention only. The books and texts are really wonderful. I read a lot. I spend most of my time in reading only....

Reading is healthy and wise. Now a day very few have the habit of reading. I read a lot perhaps due to my age and upbringing.Youngsters do not read. very pitiable. They confine themselves to TV and internet only. How it is good ..God only knows.may be they are more knowledgeble compared to us when we were of their age.But some how I am not satisfied. At times I think I am wrong. I am confused....

Yes I agree with you that books are one of the most valuable inventions of humanity. But sad to realize that books had been replaced with technology through e-book. Books are so important because it record the writers' ideas. Bible is the book of all the books and our basis for teaching life and guide to moral life.

I think that books will never truly be replaced. However ebooks do represent an evolution of books and they do have their uses just like paper books have for years. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

yes i do agree to what you say. even internet has eBOOKS which is pretty much like putting books in the worldwide web. Even if some may think that books aren't that needed but perhaps almost everything we know started with holding and reading a book. and if the internet crashes or for those who don't have pc and internet at home books become a source for knowledge. i like books, it makes others see you as someone knowledgeable. haha.

Yes, indeed, even when you go on a computer, there is still a form of books, in Ebooks. That really does underline the power of books. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I totally agree with you!!! Before there were computers and internet, i read books.
They gave information to a lot of things. You can learn much or the world, people, places , events etc because of books. I think reading is one of the basic in gaining knowledge and improving your self. Don't you think so?

Yes before the Internet for most of us, there were books. Books got our feet on the ground and no doubt in many ways inspired us to look into the things that we do on the Internet. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

never doubted books are the great invention of the humanity and it is was even fostered by the invention of a printing press and then further book writing became easy with the computer's and now so as to save trees the books are being available to be read on the computer screens and other devices to read.
books are great sort of things as generally said and very true," books neither demand nor complain" and these lay great foundation in building personality and ideology of human. books can change our traits, the way of thinking and on the whole, over time proves their effect on our lives.
and i guess every reader in a lifetime came across a book that inspires he or she.

Sorry, but, I have to disagree. Books would be completely worthless without a prior invention - language.
Even before writing was invented; language had to be invented first. Many cultures who never developed writing did develop language which allowed them to pass on verbal histories and lore.
Without language, a book is nothing but a bunch of paper that would only be useful for wiping yourself or burning for heat.

I don't actually consider "people" to be an invention; do you?
Any easy way to look at this is - have you every picked up or seen a book that was written in a foreign language? The book might have lots of very important information which would be very useful to you IF you could make any sense out of it. But, without the neccessary language skills, it is completely useless to you unless you need the paper it was printed on for some other purpose.

I can see that point. Of course, language would be useless without people to speak it. And people would be useless without someone to live. So really, it is a slide downwards. Still, I can see your point, if we did not have language, the idea of books would not come in the first place. Very true. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Books can really point out many things in a different light. Someone thinks up an idea and does a great service in sharing it with the world in the form of books. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I do think that books have helped us learn something. Although I don't think that it's the only tool that we have for learning. I don't think that this was ever the case. I do enjoy books. I love reading. I do think that books really are a good tool.

Imagine how much knowledge we would not have if it was not for books. Or people who taught us, had to learn it somewhere or the person that they learned it from had to learn it somewhere, well you get the picture. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I mostly agree. I'm a huge fan of books and I definitely think that the world would be a dreary shadow of what it is today if they had never come into existence. But like a few people pointed out before me, the two main inventions that back books were writing and the printing press.
I think the written word is one of mankind's greatest accomplishments. It's the first way that we were able to truly share information across space and time outside of word of mouth. What we know about ancient history is nothing but bits, fragments, and assumptions unless we have something they wrote and a way to understand it. (Think about just how long a computer hard-drive would remain readable if it sat in a cave for 4,000 years. Not long! lol That's one of the reasons I believe that the written word is even more important than technology and will speak to the generations that come after us much louder.)
I'm a great lover of books and I believe their invention was naturally just as important, but I do believe the written word is the first and greatest invention of mankind.

Computers might take longer to break down than books... but they cease to function pretty quick! Then they're pretty useless and you can't learn much from them. Imagine digging up a computer 2,000 years from now. It would tell future generations that we had some form of technology... but not much else. (I know I'm talking like all this information would be randomly lost... but hey! You never know!) Books, on the other hand, remain readable for generations!
Computers have done a lot for the world... but I also think they've done a great deal of harm and will continue to do so. I think that we're entirely too dependent on technology. If this continued, we would depend on technology to function? Then what would happen when it failed?
Hypothetical questions, but since I read lots of books I tend to ask them a lot.

That is very true. Not to mention it is very hard to run a computer where you don't have the power. Books have lasting power. Granted, they do degrade, but its still much longer than a computer. Computers have really shaped the world, but books still have a fairly decent place in this world that is being shaped by technology. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Hello,
I couldn't agree more. Books are my most trusted friends. They brought me out from deepest sorrow and depression. They accompanied me through my happiness. They are more than true friend. They are truer. When I had my last break up, I was completely destroyed. I started reading books, good books on philosophy, faith and humanity. Gradually, all the puzzles of human relationship began to untangle. Suddenly I realized everything about it. I started analyzing my own mind. Having done so I metamorphosed into a new, better human being. All because of books. Books have a large contribution in making the man that I am today. Thanks.
God bless you.

That's right. Books help us to learn from the experience others who lived many years ago. Without that, science and investigation wouldn't have reached all the knowledge they presume nowadays.
Reading books helps us in many points in our life, so we save a lot of time understanding better our world we live in. Depending on what kind of books we read, it also helps us to fly into another world, forget our present during a while.
A great book is one of our best friend.

When i was a kid, i used to read this sci fi series "animorphs." Where the aliens called the "Andalites" are a race with such advanced technology just like all other alien races (why are we always behind when it comes to that?) Anyway, the andalites even if they had far superior technology than us said the book is the most amazing invention they had ever encountered. and they said humans evolve backwards because we invented books first than super computers. they said that with computers they still had to process it for information. while with the book all you have to do is to turn the page and brand new info is acquired, not to mention the new world and imagination present. now that you mention it and i remember that point, yes i totally agree books are one of the greatest things on earth. even if we "steal" the knowledge from them, books don't lose a thing. human beings are such a threat to themselves because of their "awesomeness"

Yeah books after all that has been done with computers, still having a use, is rather remarkable in many ways. That is quite interesting. It just proves that they are an invention that has stood the test of time. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I do agree with the statement. Books give us the power over ourselves. Novels allow us to create pictures with what we have read and make use of our imaginations. Books let us travel even without spending a single cent. They give us added information which could be useful in our lives and day to day living. They are the "horcrux" of people who had been. They are our links to history and to the future. They are a lot of things to a different people.

Books are quite a bit when it all comes down to it. You really cannot get anything more useful than books in many cases. Sure the Internet is great and really simple, but it would not be anywhere if it was not for the knowledge that most have gained from books. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Yes, a lot of what we learn these days on the Internet as well. However, what is in the Internet has more often than not originated from books. Therefore, everything has a similar origin point. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.
