Why do you think the stereotype is for "Crazy Cat Ladies"? You hear folks talk and joke about it, even young folks when getting out of a frustrating relationship will joke "I'm just going to become a crazy old cat lady and not worry about it!" I have never heard someone say "I want to be a crazy dog lady" or "A crazy bunny man." What do you think? Why are cats the animal of choice for "Crazy ___ ladies"?
I would especially think it would be more like "Crazy dog lady" because dogs earn the "man's best friend" title.

ahahaha :). When I adopted my first cat, someone told me "oh if you have one, it's not much more trouble to have two." So we ended up adopting a second one a year later.
Then since two are no trouble, so we ended up adopting a third... and then a fourth... then we realize four are WAY more trouble than just one haha.

I agree they are like potato chips you can't just have one! We have 3 & I'd like a fourth but hubby says no. I'll gladly trade his dog for a couple more kitties!

Actually, all the crazy cat ladies I know own at least one dog, in addition to all the cats :)
I guess it's cats because they are relatively low-maintenance, compared to all other pets. Especially if they're outdoor cats, they can survive by themselves for a long time, and are more than capable of getting their own food, if the "old lady" forgets or cannot feed them.
Probably people also pay attention to them, it's weird to see many cats in one place, since they're not usually social animals.
I got branded by my friends as the crazy cat lady for owning just two. I didn't even "own" them (who could say something like this about a cat?). They just walked in one day and refused to leave.

I am the "Crazy Cat Lady" on Facebook, but in real life I only have three cats. I had four cats, but Frisky passed away from Feline Leukemia in April. I am still do my best to get through it.

It's strange that you would bring that up because just last night as I went outside to feed all my strays I was telling myself not to become a "crazy cat lady"!! I feed the neighborhood strays, poor things, and I've become so fond of them that they now have names. If I weren't allergic to cats and didn't have two dogs, they'd all be right here inside my house!
People use that stereotype because, I think, it's so easy to become a crazy cat lady. Lonely people who need to be needed are so common. Cats are everywhere and breed like crazy so it's easy to collect them and become that crazy person.
We have had crazy dog people in my neck of the woods this past year. Many people have been found with dozens of dogs in their house so it's not just cats--although people usually cite cat ladies because they are such common pets.
