I'm curious to know where everyone is at for WPM (words per minute) and whether or not it comes in handy at work.
I think I'm roughly at about 80 WPM but I haven't done a test in a couple of years. It definitely is a good deal when it comes to working online (like MyLot or ChaCha..) and at my 2nd part time job, doing data entry - but isn't really relevant at my main job, at the dry cleaners.
What about you? How many WPM can you type, and does it help you in whatever field you're in? What's a "good" WPM to be at, and what's not so good?

Being able to type in today's job market as an employee is VERY important. Even if it is just for yourself, learning the basics of data entry is crucial. I type on average about 90-100 WPM.. I was a Medical Transcriptionist in the past...having to transcribe dictation audios into documents. I got tired of having to rewind back because I didn't catch something... so I learned to type just as fast as the person talking to me!!

Hello. Your typing speed is excellent. It is twice my typing speed. That's wonderful. I work on the computer many hours a day, data entry, market research, and so on. But, my typing speed is way too slow still, compared to people like yourself.

I think that being in the 80's is rather good. I took a typing course and finished at around 95. Ive been working typing for the past 8 yrs and I might have to test my speed again to see how fast Im at. I can fly by typing quite fast when I have to.
Id say that being below 60 would be quite bad......but then again, it depends what type of work you do!!

Well i recently tested my typing speed at speed test.com and my average wpm with o errors is around 60wpm.Before just a few years ago my typing speed was much much lower around 15-20 words per minute.I used to do the hen peck technique with is not really typing and i really was a bad typed. Now i am much faster and accurate and I am able to type a a greatly increased speed without looking at the keys.I took a few typing classes when in high school so I got some practice but for the most part my improvement in typing was from using my lot and surfing the internet.

I think computers came naturally to me. At an early age in 5th grade, I had a high typing spped for my age, it was roughly 40 words per min.
In my high school, I helped with a keyboarding class, and we had a program typing aid on the computer, and I took a 21 line test, and had the fastest speed of 108 words per min.
Now, I estimate that I can type 90 to 100 words per min, i don't know how fast I type on my blackberry though.

eh you are right there typing is a really hard skill to master and that is about average 80 WPM so you are doing good the problem with me is that if i type to fast then i will miss out words when i do not press down the keys hard enough or where i do not press the key at all.I think it does help me at my work as it is a semi typing job and the faster you can type meens that you have nothing left on your shoulders for when you go in the next day and get some more work and also if i get some spare time i can go on mylot so it is pretty improtant for me too type fast and i am sure it is important for you.I have never taken a test but i will have to take one soon so that then i can see how fast i type and see if it is good against the average of 80 WPM.Do you know any free ways of taking a test or not?

My typing speed is 30-35 minutes per minutes. I think this is not a good typing speed. So I always try to improve my typing speeds. I think there are also many persons who have very good typing speed and also type without seeing their keyboard. So now I also want to perfect in typing.

I'm at about 75 WPM, in English, though the number of mistakes I make is frightening. Slightly better in my mother tongue, but I haven't done any tests in a while.
I learned to type on a typewriter - I'm not that old, rather - our educational system is that outdated :) Because of that, I have a habit of hitting every key with equal pressure, and quite a lot of it, so I break my keyboard every 2-3 months. My purchase manager at work learned to list them as consumables :)
