Why do people rely on technology?

Back in the 90's when I started elementary school, I couldn't imagine a day where people would be rushing to stores for the latest iPhone, laptop, or video game. I could imagine consoles, maybe, but not specific games. Now here we are. It's 2010, and I see kids everywhere walking around with digital cameras, cell phones, PDAs, and iPods. I couldn't imagine this 13 years ago; it's hard to believe.
So, why does everyone rely on these luxuries?
We were all taught in Middle and High School that without these advances in technology, there would be no advance in science, and ultimately, vice versa. I think, as a people, we rely on these products for different reasons. iPods (or any other digital music player) keeps us listening to music; music has been shown to have therapeutic benefits, as well as express moods and situations. Computers keep us connected to the internet, let's us play games, and keep businesses alive. Cell phones, although sometimes high in radiation levels depending on the phone, keep us in contact with those close (or far) from us, and without cell phones... well, what would you do if you were in an accident in the middle of nowhere, and could not call anyone, knowing that you would have signal there?
There are many reasons to rely on technology today. what are your thoughts?

I think people rely on technology because it makes life easier. For example now, a cellphone is a necessity because a lot of businesses need to keep in touch with their employees instead of using the home phone or landline. As far as the Ipod goes, I think it is still a luxury because our phones nowadays can still store music so having an Ipod is unnecessary. Another high tech device that I still consider a luxury and not a necessity is the Digital Camera because a lot of cellphones nowaday has higher than 5 Megapixel Cameras as an additional feature.

Thank you for your feedback. You have provided some excellent points. I can understand how phones can store music, although mine can't; it's still possible for me to go out and get one though!
Also, seeing as phones have cameras and music players programmed in them, this reminds me of something I was also going to ask about: Memory Cards. While some devices have high storage, people still go out to get their x gig microSD cards. I feel as though it isn't necessary, unless you store a lot of photos/songs/videos on your devices.

I know it is outdated and all but taking pics on a regular camera is fun. I love taking in my film and looking back on the pics. I love the digital for things like weddings and times that cant be recaptured if the film gets ruined etc but with practice, you can learn to take really great pics on a regular camera.

Technology does bring lots of benefits in our life. With technology, we can enjoy life more with activities like gaming, movies, music, travel etc...
Anyway, i do think life without those hi-tech stuffs are good in certain part. Especially relationship between family and friends. People nowadays are addicted with machines and seldom talk to neighbors or even same person staying at their own house like parents & siblings. Also, we are unable to enjoy and relax in some nice environment without our phones by our side. Wouldn't it be great if we can forget about work for a day or two and enjoy the nature without bring any high-tech stuffs along :p.

It would be great to forget about work for awhile and enjoy life without sending texts constantly. And I agree with the lack of communication completely; I don't talk to my family as much as I used to, and after living here for two years I can still say I don't know my neighbors at all.

hi Elaine,
I grew up in the 60s and early 70s. I remember the days before we even had calculators and even when they were available, we were not allowed to use them in school ever or for any reason. I remember in the 80s when the insurance company that I worked for switched from the micro-phish to computers. We still kept paper files as a back up just in case the computers went down. Also, we all knew how to do our jobs without the computer. I have to say that I love how much simpler life is with all this technology but I fear that people have no idea how to survive without out it. I also think that much of our creativity and problem solving skills, survival skills has been dumbed-down as a result of it and our dependence on it. So many kids these days do not know how to fill out a check, count back change or do math without calculators and computers. Many kids can't write legible cursive because they use computers to do their homework. when I was a teen, we did not have computers, video games or I-pods to entertain ourselves. We found ways to occupy ourselves with our friends and alone. Beating boredom took a bit of creativity and we didn't have a choice but to get creative. Entertainment was not at the touch of a button. So while technology has its place and is a great thing, I think we've lost a lot of good things as a result.

It makes people's lives better and easier. And more interesting. Not to mention fun. It's too late to go back now, not that anyone would want to. Everything will keep getting more and more high tech, who knwos where it will end up. People already can't see themselves living without all these things. I can't even imagine what life was like before all this and I don't want to find out. And it'll always be like this. People from next generations won't be able imagine what life was like now whereas we can't imagine what life was like in the past.

Nowadays technology is very useful. You don't need to go to library as internet has his own answer to do some of your home work. There are site that are very informative. That why technology is there to help us and to make our life easy. If we only used it in a right way.

Technology has grown through out time. If you go back even further cars were a luxury, a telephone and TV were also considered Luxuries. Now you can find that most people have TV's if not one, one for several rooms in their homes. Look at kitchen appliances, one use to beat batter by hand, bread kneaded by hand, now there are machines to do those jobs. Opening a jar even there are machines for that.
As our sciences grow, we grow with it as it is brought out to the public. Actually Technology is alot further than what is available to us as people. It is only let out at slower pace. Look at our economy as our lives change with Technology, it changes what is built, which jobs will change, so the economy changes which causes those huge changes like what we are going through now. We no longer buy those landline phones like we use to, yet each home has a cell phone for each member of the home for the most part now. We no longer have the need to buy Desktop computers because laptops are more convenient for again each person to have their own computer and takes up much less room.
I could keep going in how so much has changed just in my life. So much has changed in 50 years and it will keep changing. That is what I have taught my children as they grew, that they needed to grow with what was going to be needed in the future. This way they knew to expect change and roll with it as it comes.
Technology will always grow, nano technology is now becoming more and more in our life than most realize. They just use the products because its easier... Not many know what goes into the products that makes them work.
Life is growth..

Technology gets more and more advanced with each passing year. We rely on it for som many different reasons. some of us need rely on technology for educational needs. Some of us rely on it for entertainment purposes. yet some of us rely on the latest technology to further our employment or just to enhance our futures.

People rely on technology because you can use it in the most convenient way. It is the basic of necessity. One someone needs an instant and most comfortable thing, the user will gradually depend on it. He will come to seek for it. But depending on technology will have a negative effect. Psychologically, behavior will usually change and become impatient. Physically, it may harm our health because of radiation.
