Why do people ask people from the INTERNET important medical questions concerning themselves? I am baffled at some of the medical questions I see people asking about themselves on here, especially when they have already been given an answer from there doctor which they have visited on the issue. Why do they not ask there doctor these questions, or get a second opinion from another doctor. I am amazed that people would turn to people from the internet, who they do not know, to answer a question concerning there health, and welfare. What are your views on this?

Hi sauravshrm. I Have got some serious health issues and have been running from pillar to post, from one doctor to another to know about what is causing me all these problems. But none of the doctors were of much help. I mean, they just tell me what to do, but never tell me what is causing all the pain and how to deal with it. I have back pain, tmj and a lot of other problems as well. The most recent is tmj and my dentist just gave me a bite guard to wear all the time. Thats it. He did not even tell me that I had tmj and what I had to do for that. I started reading in the internet about it and the experiences of people with similar problem and how they managed to control the pain. I now know that I have to change my lifestyle for that and a lot of other things too. I did make the changes and guess what, my pain has come down considerably. This was not at all dealt with by my dentist. I am not encouraging others to discuss their health issues only on the internet and not see a doctor. All I am saying is that, apart from seeing the doctor, it is always better to find out more about the health problems which affect you than relying only on the doctor. And it is good to get a second opinion too.

Hi! I think most of us wants to know if there are also other people who are also undergoing or experiencing what we are medically suffering or shall we say also having our medical woes. I don't think they are asking for a diagnosis but it is more of an inquiry to those who are also facing the same struggles. Maybe we can call it "seeking for a support system" or simply looking for someone who can empathize with what they are going through. Personally, I don't post topics about medical problems but what I usually do, i would search through the internet about topics related to the sickness I am curious about or related topics on the subject matter. But at the end of the day, i would still seek actual professional medical assistance if there is really a need for it so that i can get proper medical attention and assistance. As for those who are used to discussing their personal medical problems and sickness over the internet, I think that's their coping mechanism but i do hope they still seek professional help. Besides there are online medical websites, who knows they can also chat or confer with doctors but still an actual visit to the doctor is still the best. Aside from that, as the saying goes - "joy shared is doubled; problem shared is halved"...and a simple sympathetic and kind word can really go a long way especially when it uplifted somebody else's spirits. Have a good day and happy mylotting! :D

This kind of baffles me as well, because if it is something serious, something that could be cancerous, or it could be deadly or dangerous, YOU HAVE TO SEE A DOCTOR! Never, NEVER, mess around with Cancer, Diabetes, Asthma, STDs (sexually transmitted diseases, STDs are something that people REALLY don't want to mess with) or anything that could kill you. Now, if it's the common cold, people should automatically know to take a lot of vitamin C, drink a lot of water, get plenty of rest, eat some chicken soup, and drink some 7Up (we think this originated in California, but you drink 7Up when you have a stomach ache). For the common things, you can get medical information online, but if it is serious, see a doctor as soon as possible.

I am guilty of asking others on the internet about health issues. Its interesting to find out if there are others that are dealing with the same things that I am. Also, in my personal situation, I have seen 6 different doctors for the one problem. So far, there has been no definite help for me. Im sure that there is at least one other person out there that may be going thru the same thing and may actually have answers that I may be able to suggest to my doctors.

I quite agree that has always baffled me

I think opinions from people on the web who may have had a certain disorder or illness is a good idea. Everyone reacts to an illness differently. Other people may also be able to offer helpful information that doctors can't.

I suppose it is because getting another doctor is not that easy. I know years ago, that is when my husband and I were first married, I could not get pregnant and there was only one doctor who could help in the whole city. Also they may want a natural solution to their problem rather then relying on pills and surgery and usually most doctors will give you pills that you have to take the rest of your life and surgery in some cases. The other reason is they want to know what other people have done. Now it may seem logical to always take the doctor's advice, but when you have a doctor who is a pill pusher, it is not a good idea.

I'm sure people here know that doctors' diagnoses and advice trump the average man's take on medical conditions. However, partly from curiosity and probably from a need to compare experiences with those facing similar conditions, we see such posts made here. Besides, there are posters here with a medical or nursing background, so their contributions aren't entirely worthless. Doctors too can make wrong diagnoses, hence someone with concerns might air theirs here.

well because it is the easiest thing to do. in the internet there would be no one to judge them or humiliate them. and they dont have to go somewhere to find out whats wrong with them even if there are a lot of bad diagnosis.

Well, it's way cheaper than getting yourself checked up on a hospital. I guess they only ask about their condition if they surely trusts the site. Atleast that's what i would do. It's important to be practical nowadays but it's also important to know who you're trusting.

It's called being resourceful. I bet you do not have that quality. Now now, just to give my 2 cents on this, why do they ask for advice on the internet regarding their health when they had already asked their respective doctors of what's actually happening to them, it's because when you are gravely ill, or let's say you have some kind of disease that you can never accept, most HUMANS wants to doubt it even though it has been said and proven that they do have it, they cling on the smallest-to-zero chances of proving they do not have it, even though they are just fooling themselves. Let's say something like this, you have AIDS, you've been diagnosed to have it, tests were done and it showed that you have it. Now you do not want to accept the fact that you have it, so you go to the internet and ask about AIDS. You are hoping that you'll get some answer that will point out that you do not actually have it. Anyways, what they do is called RESOURCING. Check out the dictionary, you may find it under letter R.

Hi Sauravshrm! I understand where your getting at. It's just that when you have some medical issues or concerns 2 doctors are just not enough, lol. Of course you want other people's opinion on what they did, what to do, if you have the same issue or concern. It helps to know all these before deciding on what to do next. Whether you will proceed with your treatment, observe for a while, or go on with the surgery. Happy MyLotting!

I don't think they're exactly turning to other people here in the internet regarding the diagnosis of their doctors. I think they just want to share it to everyone so that some would find out how to deal with it, or if other people have the same experiences, they could give ideas on how to deal with the diagnosis. Of course they're aware that not everything you see in the internet is reliable. But the net is really the vastest avenue to connect a lot of people and it contains a lot of information which one could consider in what their doctors asked them to do. It could also be that they're looking for ideas then ask their doctors about them. If they happen to get across a decent solution, and the doctors ok it, then it would certainly help them right?

I don't know about others, but for me, I ask just to know how other people in the same situation deal with the problem, and what are the treatment options in some other countries. I've found at that the symptoms and diagnoses are the same, but treatments sometimes vary from one region to another, depending on the practices of each medical school. These discussions actually give me more ideas regarding what to ask my doctor. Of course I take the doctor's advice at all times, but sometimes it's good to discuss with people with common experiences.
