What do you think of travel reviews?

I really shouldn't so it, read reviews of hotels that I am going to that is! Two weeks today (yippee) we are flying off to the Balearic Islands for ten days, all inclusive, in Menorca. I have visited Menorca before and really enjoyed it; however this is a different area, and different hotel, that we are going to this year. I just went on TripAdviser reading the reviews _ how can there be such differing opinions on one hotel? Half the reviews were saying how lovely the food was while the others were saying how dreadful it was! I really shouldn't bother reading these reviews as I know what they can be like, we have had a couple of holidays that got some SHOCKING reviews, especially about the food and yet we found it to be wonderful. I have come to the conclusion that the people who are saying that the food is bad are the sort of people who fly off abroad from England and want bacon and eggs and fish and chips, the ones who like the food are the type, like us, who want to taste the typical food from that area - I hope this is the case this time! I remember when we went to Morocco, it was all inclusive and the food was incredible - you could literally eat all day if you wanted to and there was SO much variety, and yet there were some (English I'm afraid)who were going out to buy McDonalds because 'the food was so bad' !! Do you read reviews of where you are going when you travel, if so have they been right or completely wrong?

I think the problem with some travel reviews on travel websites in particular is that the overall view of the hotel can be clouded by a bad experience by a holiday maker who may have not liked the holiday as much as they hoped and then blamed the Hotel for it. That's why you should always look at several reviews if you are really that bothered.

I think so, I really do like to make my own opinion on a place, we are with a reputable travel company so shouldn't be too bad - a week tomorrow I'll know!!

Hi, I do read about travel reviews before I visit certain countries. I always search for some info online and see what is the best food and tourist spots to visit when I am there for my holiday. Of course, some people may write bad and some may write nice reviews on that location. It is basically depend on individual's expectation. Some people may have high expectation and they may find that this food is not nice at all,but to some people, they may find that this food is taste great. For me, I will just read all the reviews and I will try it out myself when I am there, after that only I will know which review is right and wrong. Especially when looking for hostel accomodation, I have to read the reviews carefully. I remembered last few years when I was intended to go Hongkong,I was searching for some hostel at the convenience place. I have to read all the reviews before making the decision for the hostel booking. At last, I managed to get one at very convenience place and the price is reasonable too, the most important the owner is very nice person.

I like to find out what the travel is like, best places to see that sort of thing. I've not had to do much this year my 14 year old son keeps finding articles and e-mailing them to me! He has found some hefty walks - I think I'll leave them to him!!!

We are the type who would like the variety and the authentic food, not Mickey D's. New foods are part of what make a vacation enjoyable. If I was going to read the reviews it would only be for the fun of seeing them proved wrong.I would enjoy visualizing the people who are so set in their ways.

I love sending in opposing reviews when I get back and saying just what I thought!

I never really read travel reviews. I've read a few reviews of hotels or the like, and found them generally accurate. It's also useful to know what there is to visit locally, but I think that reviews can be too subjective to be of great use.

I must admit that I have stopped reading them because of the varying views - I was just trying to find if there was a kettle in our room ! (sad I know but I love my first coffee in bed!!)

Hello Oldchem1! I do not think it it wise to listento what some review says, because it is one person opinion, how HE sow it, how HE enjoied himself, how HE like it or not. It is a personal opinion, and how people are presenting a very large of variety in preferences, so you will find the reviews! Better test it on your own skin, and be prepared for the worst/or best, and after make your opinion on the degree that that hotel/trip raised up to your expectations :)

Yes that's what I'm going to do. I am looking forward to the break as we've not had a foreign holiday in two years, so I shall be happy just to relax!! From what I can see the area and hotel seems lovely and I'm sure tat I shall love the food - it seems like it is all very Spanish - lots of paella, traditional Menorcan cheeses and of course Sangria!! It's all paid for now so I'm just going to sit back and enjoy it. This time next week I shall be sat there eating my meal and washing it down with a nice jug of Sangria!!!

Okay, a few months ago I went to Majorca for two weeks, I too researchd various hotels on tripadviser and found the same problem, half great reviews and half dreadful. Keep in mind that the Balearic Ilses (at least Majorca) are primarily British almost all bars/restaurants offer meals which primarily british people enjoy. The problem with tripadviser is that the reviews aren't excatly 100% accurate. A lot of times other hotels write bad reviews about their competiotion and vice versa, it happens. The food is never as horrible as people claim. Good choice going for the all inclusive, all other packages suck because they make you pay around 2 euros for a glass of water at the restaurant hotel.

I do like the all inclusive for that reason, it was good value holiday so id we do find a restaurant outside the hotel we want to eat in one night we wouldn't feel that it was a waste of money!! I've never been to Majorca but found the smaller Menorca charming last time I went and it wasn't too 'British' !! I think people complain when it isn't 'English' bacon or egg and chips!!

I do read reviews when I plan to go out somewhere for travel. At most times, those information are quite useful and help me a lot. Though different people may have various opinions about the same hotel or travel places, you can make your own comprehensive evaluation after reading them. In current days, it's hardly to go somewhere and you know nothing about it.

some reviews are quite right but the others are not. you should realise the fact about it. so you can regard this experience as a lesson, when you find something through other's reporting, you should divide them into the right and the wrong to deal the problem.
