When will you break down and turn the heater on?

Haha, I'm starting this discussion because finally we broke down and turned the heater on last night in the house. It was just too chilly otherwise! We've had a bit of a cold front here in Minnesota of the U.S.
Here's my question for you: when do you generally start turning the heat on? Do you wait until it's absolutely necessary?

I'm in Texas, and while it normally doesn't get very cold until December or February, we've had nighttime temps around 40 - 50 lately. I've climatized to the Texas weather though, (even though I'm a born and raised northern gal, LOL), so I feel cold when it's 40 degrees, but we normally wait until it's necessary to use the heat. By the way, before we moved here, my husband wanted to move to Minnesota! :-D :-D

I think that's where he wanted to move, to Minneapolis, lol! Texas is ok, we've been here eight years but I still can't get used to it. Every time we get a Tornado watch or warning, I panic, LOL! We're next to Dallas though, and have been lucky with not much severe weather this past Spring. :-) Houses here have no basements or cellars either, that's always surprised me. But in general, it's alright here.

We still have not turned the heat on here in Virginia but that is because it is only about 60's in the days and 50's at night.
We do not turn the heat on until completely necessary. Probably because we all like the cold. What does completely necessary mean to you? How cold is it there?? I still have my window open to let the cold air in =)

We turned ours on last month. There were a few pretty chilly nights and a couple of colder days. Thankfully, we haven't had to run it continually yet.
I am one of those people who gets cold pretty easily, so, when the temperatures start to drop outdoors and I get cold, I will turn my heater on. There is no specific time time of the year, and I try to wait until I just can't stand it anymore, but if I am cold, it goes on.

I was trying so hard not to do it, had two blankets on my bed, sweatpants and a sweatshirt on, but was still shivering. So we turned it on last night, it was just to cold. I really wanted to wait until November but it just was necessary.

Haha we have a similar goal: wait AS long as possible!! November seems a little late, at least for where I am, because Minnesota definitely cools down about early October or so. Ironically, this year it has been the hottest October that I can remember (so far)!

Haha good discussion...
We usually do around here when it get down to anything under 68 in the house. Although it seems that shouldnt be bad but its chilly.. So we have been once in a while turning on the heat since the end of last month. In I completely understand with the cold front (Iowa here)....

We turned on the heat last month, it's been pretty cold lately.
As much as we don't want to put it on, because we pay for it, we have no choice as we have to keep ourselves and our pets comfortable.
We have lots of trees in our yard and they help keep it colder around our house, the sun doesn't reach the back of the house which makes that part of it colder.

Unfortunately its been so cold and rainy here lately that I've been forced to turn the heat on. During the day we just wear sweatshirts to keep us warmer but at night right before our showers it gets really chilly and who wants to take their clothes off and get in the water and get out and have that cold air hit them.

Hi. maezee. It is now 69 degrees in my apartment right now. It really feels very cool in here. Or could it be the iced tea that I was drinking? For the past week, we had to turn on the heat at night. It was really chilly when I would wake up. At first, I thought that it was me, but it wasn't. It was the chilly weather! It is getting colder now. It was 51 degrees this morning, as I took my son to the bus stop. It was really cold. I think that we will be needing the heater on for quite a while from now on.

If i would decide that, the heat was already on , but as i`m staying in a rented apartment with 2 girls, i can`t say that from today we will have heat in the house, because maybe they don`t want that, and so, we are just turning on the heat about 3-4 hours / evening and then we are turning on 15 degrees , witch is so cold, but until morning it`s just fine . On daylight it`s colder than in the night .
But in my parents apartment they must wait for the central to open the heat, because the hole block , all the neighnor are receiving heat from the same source . But they already begun to sent heat , just to test the instalation .

We normally dont turn our heat on till the end of October or beginning of November but this year we have already turned it on..it has been cold already this year and I am hoping that is not a sign of what we may be in store for. We turned our on last week because it has been in the low 40's here at night...

Hi Maezee
I just turned on my 2 freestanding fireplaces for heat they work pretty good they really take the chill off without having to turn on the heat I have one in the living room and one downstairs in the family room it gives the house a nice cozy feeling and like you we have had a cold front move in here and it got to in the upper 40's low 50's overnight
I am going to try and hold out from turning on the heat for as long as I can the fireplaces don't burn as much energy like I said earlier theyr'e able to do the job

I've been sleeping with a blanket for the past two weeks but I haven't turned the heat on yet. I usually wait until late October since I can handle the chill right now. It also firms the skin! I'm just kidding, the climate here is quite mild and the sun still shines brightly during the day so I don't feel I need it just yet.
