Ever been in a dilemma as to what calcium supplements is best for for? NOw, cosider this- Calcium Carbonate vs. Calcium Citrate. These two are the most common forms of calcium supplements in the market. Knowing what works best for you is to know how well each is effectively absorbed by our system (particularly your gut).
According to the Dietary Reference Intake DRI for calcium, an adults needs 1000mg to 1300mg of calcium intake per day depending on the age and gender. This is the reason why we need to know our options in choosing which calcium supplements is best for each individual. Take for example, Calcium Carbonate (Tums or Caltrate)which requires an extra stomach acid for better absorption, hence it is best taken after meals. On the other hand, Calcium Citrate (Citracal or Solgar) does not require an extra stomach acid for proper rabsorption, therefore it can be taken anytime of the day, even in an empty stomach!
The downside is, it usually provides a lesser elemental calcium which requires an increase in the intake of this pill depending on your needs (except for acid reflux disorder).
Checking for the USP on the label is a must. It tells whether or not USP standards of supplying adequate elemental calcium is met and that it really works! I hope that clears some misconception on calcium supplements.
