Hi friends, I have developed short sightedness over time...I think its because of using the computer for long periods...I use it for over 10 hours everyday...do you suggest anything for people who have to use it often and for long periods.
I read somewhere it happens because we stare at computer screen continously and it reduces our blinking rate and eyes get strained. But there should be something we can do.

either you stop staring at the screen and take every one hour break to save youself from getting those effects or suffer the consequences. You will feel greater pain, if you are wearing contact lenses. Maybe take more vitamin A or carrot juices should improve your eye sight. All the best

I was wondering if LASIK (eye laser ) will do the cure the short sightedness. It is one of the most advanced technology currently which enable people that wears spectacles or contact lenses to throw them off . However it could be quite pricey. The laser treatment helped my grand father who has cataract to be heel. We are still skeptical that once the laser treatment goes wrong so is our eyes. I would have tried not because of the gruesome stories I heard. Maybe I will just go to reputable doctor

yes, thats what I fear most, if anything goes wrong..I just feel unsafe of using any laser method..I will probably start spending less time on the computer and wear spectacles often.thanks for your advise though

well i do use the computer too for long hours maybe 10 or more including the time i spent while working at the office. When my eyes started to feel dry and gets a little strained, I just stop looking at the monitor. I go out from my desk and have a drink of water to replenish myself. While doing so, I also relax my eyes while looking at the outside window just watching the good view of nature or anything I found relaxing. This could last about 10 minutes including the walk until I reached our canteen area. I often do that when I'm not comfortable and it helps me reduce my eyestrain. -)

If you are using a CRT monitor, yes there are filters that can be used to protect your eyes. I have also used those in our home and it helps reduce my eye strain somehow. Or you could also try wearing a multi-coated lens for your eyeglasses. This type of lens are highly recommended for computer users. It protects the eyes from ultraviolet, radiation, and other two but I just forgot them. You should also consider consulting from your ophthalmologist first though just to make sure. Because these glasses are a bit expensive I guess.

I have been doing it...but It didnt help...I guess I have to take frequent breaks...to be able to cope up with this. I think there are some films that we can use on computer and it reduces the brightness of the monitor.....arent there??

When we are in the computer we stare at it the whole time, while reading too, for example, so we must take our sight to other places, both closer and further to exercise our pupils or they'll just lock in the same position and that's where we need glasses or the headache starts

The condition so developed due to over using of the computer for a long time is known as 'Computer Vision Syndrome'. What you can do is change your gaze occasionally,do some ocular exercise, use a protective shield for your computer, and also may use an artificial tear substitute. But what is more important is to consult with an ophthalmologist to see if there is any refractive error and if there is any, you should use a glass advised by the ophthalmologist.
