Are you aware about the fact that traffic light on the street came much before manufactur of cars?
It was J P Night, an Engineer of British Rail Road, who used two lanterns in green and red signal in 1868 and fixed them on the crossing of George and Bridge Streets to in front of British House of Commons to regulate traffic of horse-drawn carts and pedestarians.
Cars came in USA in 1890 and need of traffic lights was felt. First automatic traffic system was installed in Chicago in 1910. Thereafter in 1912, Electric System was introduced by Lester Wire of Salt Lak city. It was installed at Cleveland of Ohio in 1914. In 1917, William Ghigliary of California claimed the patent and added yellow signal.

I am sure it did, people with horses and buggies were probably bumper-to-bumper on the Oregon Trail.
