Getting a new car is always the best. Used car would most likely just give you problem. Most owners are selling their cars because they are already having problems with their cars so when you buy one it would be buy one take all, buy the car and take all problem that goes with it.
Now if the car is still new and an owner is just selling it because of some unavoidable reason and you know the history of the car then that is a good buy. But it you will buy a car which has an old model, you are not saving because while the price is low, maintaining it would cost you a lot.

Here is how I see buying a used car. You are not getting someones treasure as it were they would not have sold it instead you get someone's headache. I did buy several in my past but have not for my last two were new.
Although no guarantee new cars will not something wrong eventually, at least you get quite a few years without the headaches. So new all the way for me.
