I've encountered people like this several time, mostly women with child, just standing somewhere many people is passing by. They were asking me for money cause they run out of transportation fare and they are going too far from where they are. I've given one women with a little amount, she still stood remain there. I didn't get the idea of this, if this a modus operandi or true. I can see the disturbance in that women's face. How bout you guys? what did you do in this situation?

No never for transportation fare. Someone did ask advice to me because she believes she didn't have enough money on her chip card but I told her to check in and immediately check out in the back of the bus. Especially immigrants are very well known with this trick... hehe...

I beg to disagree Ma'am or Sir. Sometimes we shouldn't generalize people. People are unique and indiviualize. What applicable to them might not applicable to others.

But sometimes we should. I travel by bus everyday and never have I seen a native Dutchie use that trick.

I also did not encounter any one doing this trick in the bus. This people do this in an area where there are many people passing by, like in a town where markets and buss. establishment are there. They just standing there, waiting for someone to approach.

Why don't they ask the police for help? If they are not hiding anything, it should be okay right? but why do you think they avoid being near police officers. It's good to give but you are just making that person more unproductive and it's even dangerous to be talking to this people as I've heard that some somewhat do some hypnotizing stuffs to you and you will be robbed easily (usually they have an accomplice near the area). Really, one must avoid this types of persons, if you really want to help the person, report it to a police officer near the area.

If this people are true and not a scam, the easiest thing to do to get money is to ask for it from strangers, it's not sure if the police will help you immediately. Don't ever look straight into strangers eye, hypnotizing really happens.

Actually ever since this hypnotizing thing spread to the public, I don't use eye contact anymore when talking with others. I usually talk with someone while doing something. It's really hard to know whether they are true or scam, I just avoid these people whenever I can.

Well dear this is one of the modus operandis of scrupulous people around. I was also actually fooled by an old woman who looked so pathetic. She was telling me she was left alone by her grandchild. I asked her if she knows how to commute toward her home and she said says. So I gave her enough money to go back to her place. But you know what after a week I saw that same woman again asking transportation fare from people who were passing by. And worse, when I passed she was again telling me the same story. I felt really bad. How this woman at her old age would still engage in this modus operandi.

Yeah, that was disappointing, you thought they badly needed your help but they actually trick you. What even worse it that the old woman can't find other way to get money for their food but to scam people. How can her children let her do this.

Yes, I'd been accosted many times by women like that bringing babies or kids and asking for money which they said they needed as fare. I never believed any on of them because I'd still meet them after that asking for money for the same reason. I mean, it is obvious that this modus operandi worked with some people that is why they are using it over and over again.

I never encountered such situation in my life. You are very kind to help the woman. I do know of some of my friends that had encountered the same situation though, but they said they like a young guy wanting to go somewhere but have no money. But they can't tell if the guys are honest or what.

It's hard to tell if the beggar is true or not. I do help by giving coins but sometimes I don't, depends in my mood and on the look and age of the beggar.

Yes, I have encountered women with child asking for their fare. I don't think they are really running out of money... It's just a syndicate or whatever we can call them. There's a lot of them in the city and I don't believe that they are really run out of fare. It's nice to help people but it is not nice to tolerate them doing this things, they won't stop it if there are some people that believes on their lies.

That line has been used many times. You are right that if we tolerate this wrong doing, they will not stop, they will grow skyrocket. They might think that is there's no reason to find a real job when they can earn money by asking for it.

yes i have. i think quite a lot especially at this place near where i am supposed to ride home. there was this one time that there was a group of people with like 4 teenagers, 1 mom and about 3 kids in the middle of the walk way... they asked for money and i said i had no extra to spare.. this one woman insisted and i told them i really had none and i only have enough for my fare. you know what, this woman shouted at me! she said that i am not a good person because i am not sharing with them! she even used a tagalog word "Madamot" means selfish because i have not given them anything! wow! can you believe that! they are angry at me!!!

It's funny that they even hate you for not giving what they want. This people has no breeding. I have also given a boy P2 and he left but shouted at me that I am "kuripot".

I think that is a modus. I have encountered a situation like this. But I ignore it because there are members of syndicate that has a strategy like that. Or they make use of their children to beg.

Yeah, it is. This discussion proves that it is a modus by a syndicate or people wants to get money without working. Thanks to people who share their experiences.

Yes, I do have an exactly the same experience. At first I didn't know that this was a modus. I gave Php 100 because I pitied the woman and her little girl. Then, one time I talked to a friend; he said that this was indeed a modus operandi. That was the first and the last time I did that.

Awww. P100.00 is such a big money. The first time I've encounter this I ask her where is her destination and I gave her enough money so that she can travel back but she remains standing.

Yes. It was when I was in college. A man was approaching me telling how where he can ride a jeep going to Pampanga and asked for some money even P5. I remember I gave him P15 to let him go and to finish the discussion. Then after some days, my classmate told me that a guy did the same thing to her to. The guy's description led to the same guy that asked help from me too. Then we got it. It was a scam.

I've experience that too.But the difference is, she's a pregnant woman. She asked for a certain amount and thank me for giving her some. I think when someone is in that situation, I suggest not to look in their eyes while talking to them because we never know if they are a member of 'salisi gang' that uses hypnotism and distraction as their modus operandi. We should be aware of strangers that we encountered especially those who ask sympathy from us.

My friend was a victim of hypnotism. She didn't realize she gave the money that her mother gave her to buy items for their store to that person. She only realize it after the person run away. People who hypnotize really do exist so beware and do not look directly in any strangers eyes.

I was asked so many times regarding this. This is a modus operandi. A disturbance in the face of a woman can be pretended. I can do that too!! Just because the person's face is disturbed or worried, does not mean she is telling the truth. She can be a good artist! tomorrow she can at the same spot asking for transportation fare again.. shucks, she can be there everyday!

There was this one time when my classmates and I had a road trip and we stopped over at the Theotokus Shrine. We were taking pictures when an old lady walked toward us and asked us for money so she could go home. She says she doesn't have money. We were not bringing money that time because we left our wallets in the car which was parked far from where we were that time. We pitied her but we really couldn't hand her anything. We felt sorry and some thought that what if it was Mother Mary or Jesus. I know, it somewhat preposterous, but we would have been glad to help.

My heart melts whenever and elderly approaches me, this very old woman who bring her own chair at the front of the church. I once saw her crying alone, my heart melts, I am thinking how can her family and children let her begged for money, what if this is my mother. My bf told me that the old woman is crying, I bought a bread and gave it to her immediately. I wish I can help her more but there are times the I pass her by cause I am in rush or out of money.

Hi Lanie! I've already encountered those people several times specially when I was in college. Most of those people were really old. They said that they run out of cash and they need only a little money so they could go home, or sometimes they said that their money isn't enough to cover their fare. Without having any second thoughts I tried to give them cause I don't like the idea that if they cannot go home they'll just sleep on the sidewalks or on the street which is quiet dangerous. I'd nver thought that their were just doing that inorder to gain money or it was their modus operandi because their not asking a specific amount nor forcing me to give them a huge amount of money. Seeing those grandma and grandpa seeking your help is really a heartbreaking experience. It seems I can see my grandparents through their eyes.I also think that what if that situation happens to my loved one- my mom, my dad or my grandparents do you think someone would help them? I believe in karma. If their only goal is to trick other people, it isn't my fault. Their committing sins not to me but to God.

You got a good heart. It's ok to give if they are really in need but not to abuse people. You are right, God see's what they are doing and they can't run from Karma.

If I have money I could have given some. She with her child begged but I am reluctant to give the money that is only for my use. I've been skipping breakfasts and I couldn't abuse myself more by giving money to them.

I wanted to give them but the money I have is enough for my daily use. Do you believe in what they say that they run out of money?

Hi dear. It is just a fooling around and nothing other than this. In the past 6 months time, about 5-8 cases I know directly. The lady along with a small kid was standing on the over bridge of the railway station and keep asking people for money, as they come to town and they need to go back to their villages, as having no money. So many years before, when I experience the same for the first time, I thought, poor people don’t have money and somebody must have cheated, as they came from the village to the city for some purposes. I gave something and they were happy and even I was happy. A few days later, I saw the same lady with an old man doing the same thing on a different location. Then I got the doubt. And within so many years, I have experienced many cases here in this city. So, chances are more on fraud, and I am telling there may be few genuine cases too. But, in such cases, if there is any genuine, they will be trapped. Beware and take care of such people. In such cases, your brain should work, and judge them whether they are genuine or not? If not, just leave it. They will manage, but if you pay them, you may be cheated by such people. Regards, Thank-s

Thanks! It's hard to tell if they are genuine or not. This people or doing this for a job. They don't get a real job cause they know that people have a soft spot for old and child beggar, however, this old ones can't think of other way to earn money but to begged for it. It's so sad that they need to do it cause no one will give work for them anymore.

I never encounter people who as for transportation fare, but I do meet someone who pretend to be selling stationary for charity. These people will go from table to table in some of the hawker center that selling foods. The will say that they are selling something like pen to help some of the orphanage house. Let say one pen is cost $10 but actually what actually the actual amount that really goes to the orphanage house is many be less than a dollar or may be non. And they will keep the rest of the money. I really hate this kind of people so what I do is I will ask them where are the orphanage house and I will send the money straight away to them. I believe in this way, without going through the middle man, the money for charity is safe and really go to those who really need the money.

Absolutely true, even if they have ID's and uniform, you can't tell if they will give the money to the charity and by the way, that's PEN is so expensive. I remember I am walking in front of the church, one woman approach me and said she will give me a free holy thing. She did give me a cement type with picture of Jesus but the catch is I have to give a donation for a certain charity. So I gave money and wrote my name in a notebook. This woman are desperate to catch a possible target, they will wear you a necklace or rosary without your knowledge, I refuse that, they didn't approach the person first if they agree before putting on necklace to their neck.

OMG! I am glad some one has brought up this topic! I do and always come across such people asking for transport fare! From elder women to street kids. What is amazing is that some goons have found it profitable! You even find well dressed youth's in the parks asking for contribution! Shame! I only give when I can and to those I feel are in real need!

Thanks! I suddenly think of this topic when I saw a topic relative to beggars. I've experience this twice I think. It's hard to believe cause this people carrying many bags with them without transportation fare? Would you leave the house to go somewhere far without big money? Since many people do this with a pleasant dress and looks normal, this is really a modus.
