white owl - white owl our friend
India

Friends in our national language, Hindi an owl is called, ‘ullu’. Ullu means fool. But an owl is supposed to be wise, the proverb goes, ‘wise as an owl’; I really get weird. Can anybody explain this? What you think about this cute bird, which eats the insects, keeps environment clean, sleeps in day time, and awakes night time. Owl is supposed to be unlucky too. Many believe (not me of course) that if an owl sits on your roof at night and barks, somebody from the family will die soon.I consder owl as friend, never unlucky. Please respond, comment on this topic, is owl ‘fool or wise’, is it unlucky? Professor

That is really weird that they refer to an owl as a fool in your culture. I personally have never heard of an owl being referred to as anything but being a wise being. That said, most of the other superstitions that you have referred to are things that I've never heard either. Although it isn't specifically related to the owl, however, I have heard that if a bird gets into your house then someone that lives in the house is going to die in the near future.

A wise old owl sat in an oak, the more he heard the less he spoke, the less he spoke the more he heard, why aren't we all like this old bird?

In my culture, owls are considered to be wise. I don't think I've ever heard that they were unlucky...

hello professor, in many countries and elsewhere it is often referred to as "the wise old owl". might be due to its appearance, not to any superior intelligence. its staring eyes seem to be looking at as if the owl were thinking very hard; actually, those eyes are very sensitive to daylight. they are so placed that the owl has to turn its whole head in order to change the direction of its glance. and no other animals that i know could do that. have a nice day. ann

Owl looks beautiful and the eyes are shining which means wise. Do you know crow? Many people in china think it means some thing bad will happen if a crow fly cross your window. Actually crow is just a bird like owl which eats the insects, keeps enviroment clean and make contributions to spieces diversity. So it is just something about belief. If you believe then it is good,if not ,it's bad.
