Christians and Muslims shouldn't do Yoga

Or at least that's what a few religious leaders believe. A southern baptist is the newest leader against Christians doing yoga. He believes that it is against everything Christianity stands for because its based on Hinduism and has chanting. Christians aren't the only ones being warned about yoga. Muslim clerics have forbid Muslims from practicing Yoga in Egypt, Malaysia and Indonesia (according to an article I read). However, many people are defending yoga saying that they use it for mental and physical reasons, not spiritual. What do you think? What's your take on this? The original article can be found using this link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101007/ap_on_re/us_rel_southern_baptists_yoga

The problem these days id we have too many charismatic churches making their own interpretation of things. In my country, the Muslims have decided to avoid yoga because it seems it has Hindu roots. As for the Christians avoiding yoga, could it be the same reason? I need to read more about this.

I had practice Yoga before hoping that it can help me lose weight and it does. When I heard the news about it I have second thoughts and stop for a while.I did a research and actually found that "it is a way of worshipping the sun god".Maybe muslim and christian scholars have prevented it's believers because it's against their religious teachings.Personally, I believe that the goodness of all things that you do depends in your intention. So,if your doing Yoga to worship the sun God then it's really wrong but if you practice it to become fit, then it becomes right.

I have heard this before which is kind of strange because yoga is about bringing life force up nothing to do with belief system anyone who is alive should be allowed to experience the advantages of yoga I can see though, why religions don't allow yoga practice because religions are limiting, while spirituality is expanding some people think both are the same, so they just follow like a sheep

Even in India, the birth place of yoga, some Christian and Islamic schools, have banned yoga. The fact is, Indian Christians think they are more pure than any other christians in the world, and their culture will be spoiled if they practice anything that is associated even remotely with Hindu culture. I move around with a lot of people from Europe, and I found that they are quite interested in yoga, and the fact is, now days you see a lot of Europeans in the yoga classes than our own Indians. These people know more about Yoga than us, and they even understand the Sanskrit slogas which are thought there. I am sorry to say, that even I do not understand these slogas. The another interesting fact is, there is blond woman in my town, who teaches yoga on our beaches every Sunday. This woman is not only beautiful, but she knows, what she is doing, and usually a crowd will be there to watch her perform the various Asanas. So much for the Church or the Malysians forbidding people from practising yoga.

For goodness sake!! What ever next? Not that I do yoga but if I wanted to if I would - the people I know who do attend yoga classes do it for relaxation and physical reasons. The minister should mind his own business and attend to his flock and leave others to do as they wish!

For me as a born again christian, my point of view is that Yoga is one way of practicing unacceptable activity before God. yeah it is true that Yoga used for self relaxation, and having peace. But, in depth meaning, it has something to do with evil things.

Yoga essentially means union of finite with infinite;it leads an individual to transcend from his ordinary level of consciousness to cosmic consciousness. It is the Absolute truth of life and has nothing to do with any kind of faith or religion.Yoga is natural means of guiding one to realize one's ultimate source of existence and one's true identity. Those who have chosen Yoga as their basis of living on this earth are not bounded by rituals of any religion; they stay perfectly aware of the unified essence of life-the state of Absolute Being.Thanks.

practicing Yoga as a religion goes against the precepts of Christianity, if you take the mystics out of yoga, aren't you really just stretching?

Yes Jenkins, I read that in newspapers long back. It was about Malaysia. Now they are everywhere. I believe that this is more to do with politicization of Religion rather than just religion. France banned the Burqa(veil) stuff and they came up with banning yoga. Unfortunate to see that some christian schools also doing the same thing. The people who are supposed to be the leaders of religion are nowadays politicizing every aspect and this is why they are doing the banning of yoga. As far as I know, yoga is just a way to lead a healthy life. Something like and exercise. There are some poses though that they cite are not in accordance with their religion. But I ask - Does the Health of a person stand secondary to the religion? I think not. People have a right to stay healthy and fit.

I don't see how doing this yoga is against these religion. It is just a matter of exercising to me lol...and to help you breath better. All you have to do when you do yoga is yes do the exercise, empty your mind (what is wrong about emptying your mind for few minutes), then relax, and breath...hahahahha I dunno, this claim is just unbelievable, I dunno what exactly to say. I have so much in my mind right now about this. But I certainly won't fall for this claim so easily.

I am a Christian and I did yoga a few years back. I did not find any 'spiritual brainwashing' from the sessions I attended. They were purely sessions to teach proper breathing, stretching, and relaxing the mind and body. There were a few chants at the end of every session which I really do not understand, but I just went along with it and did not take it seriously. My take on this is that if you have strong faith and a solid foundation of your beliefs and religion, plus an open mind to respect the view or beliefs of others, then I do not see why yoga could be harmful.

where does these things are coming. Yoga is not specified to only a single religion and it is practiced for betterment of health not for any religious symbol. It depends upon peoples to do it or not and it is not depend on any religion.

Many people think that yoga consider as one of Hinduism religius movement, so doing that movement by another religion believer is forbiden because it means that they're mixing different religion doctrines. If we were forbiden to do yoga, there are many other ways to exercise our physic and mental like doing sport, aroma theraphy etc. Anyway, everyone have their right to see about this, if there are people who insist to do yoga with their own reason, I think we should respect that.
