Credit card or cash?

Hi, I do not own a credit card. I am thinking if we really need to have one.Maybe yes,for emergency purposes like if we ran out of cash or so.But I am also thinking credit card is just giving us a reason to spend more because of the fact that we do not need cash as of the moment to purchase something. We might purchase those that we don't really need but because you like it and you do not need cash then you go for it. But of course,it is still up to the person. Be responsible in every actions, just make sure we pay on time so we won't have a problem with the bank. Always think before purchasing. But still I am confuse if I should get one or not.

I don't have any credit card too,but my friends always asks me to have one for the same reason that you've wrote here. But,if i had savings in the bank,i am thinking why do i need to have a credit card then? Anyway,i don't have any against for those credit card user. They had good reason for having it,and i can see it is also convenient when doing their shopping too.

Hi Cherryamor, I have nothing against credit card for it depends on your spending attitude that will put you at risk. Credit card is good at emergency but as you said, it would also be a temptation for you to buy useless or not so important things. Especially when you got short of cash. Some people say, why do you have to use credit card if you have cash to spend? Credit card incurred interest, if you say but not if you paid in full and on time..yes of course. But sometimes, if you knew that it is not yet your due date to pay, you got tempted to use the money in some things which is not included in your budget list and before you knew it, you have gone short for your expenses and got hooked of this credit cards. Yes, we are responsible for our own act, and if you know yourself better, that would be your decision. But since even you are in doubt of getting one, you must know why and believe in your instinct.

Hi cherryamor! I would suggest that you don't get a credit card. Tell you what, a few years back, my mom used to own a credit card. She used to purchase stuffs using her credit card especially when she ran out of cash. But there came a time wherein she bought items because she wanted it, not for the fact that she needed it. So time came, when her credit limit increased, she happened to purchase lots of items as well. So when the credit card company has billed her, it reached 200,000 plus in our money. Luckily, we were able to avail the promo that that certain bank offered. Wherein, we were able to avail the 50% discount, however, we needed to pay the amount for certain period of time. When we have paid all the debts, she turned down all the credit cards that were being offered by different banks. So if you don't want to reach this kind of problem, better yet, don't get credit card. But if you really want to get one, always think a thousand times before purchasing a merchandise using your credit card.

Hi, Thanks for the advice. I guess you are right. Though, we know how to control but sometimes we get tempted so its better not to have a credit card to avoid uneccessary expenses. And I hate getting bills every month, its just like you are working hard to pay your bills.

A credit card can be a really good thing to have, or it can be a nightmare. Try to find one that charges no annual fee and that gives you some kind of reward...airline miles, cash back, something. Then...and listen closely...PAY IT OFF IN FULL EVERY MONTH!! You do that, no problem. you start missing payments, then you can quickly get in over your head. They may occassionally send you the most boring looking documents you have ever seen in the mail. Read them. The credit cards can change the terms of your agreement, and these boring looking notices are the only way they tell you. If you use the card after they have sent out the change of terms, you have accepted the new terms.

I own a credit card that has a credit limit of around $2300 which was just offered by the bank for free on the first year since having an account with them. But I only spend less than $100 a month on an average since I use this to purchase my airfare tickets. I also use this for our groceries which is budgetted and when we dine on restaurants and I am too lazy to withdraw cash from the atm. I don't shop that often for me to swipe it right here and there. Bottomline, I pay my credit card bills in full without a chance of being late. I guess I am a living example of a person who has a strong control on wise spending. I make sure I remember all of my purchases so I won't go surprised when the billing statement arrives.

credit cards are good if you have an emergency or need to book a hotel, but other than that, they cause too much of a headache because of the high interest fees!
• Philippines

Hi, Unless we avail zero interest plan or pay the bill before the due date,we dont have to worry much. But still yes it is a headache if you dont take it responsibly. Thanks.

I have my credit card for a long time already. And it helps me especially during the times i don't have cash. And its convenient as well because you will not carry money to pay for something. The only problem with credit card is the fee or the interest if you don't pay on time or if you pay less than the minimum. Anyway, for me its better to have a credit card but be sure you will use this with proper supervision. Or else you will suffered.

This is so funny because I just got off the phone with my husband. He is convincing me to get a credit card. I am not really a believer of credit cards. This little card is often times just a temptation. However, I understand that sometimes during emergency situations, credit cards are really helpful. I am now slowly considering to get one, but I have to be very strict in case I get approved. I will only use it during emergency situations.

Credit cards can be convenient, but they can also be an annoyance. Cash is so much easier to handle. You don't have to worry about identity theft when you use cash.

Yes, credit can help out in times of strained cash flow, but I wouldn't worry too much about not having it either. As Dave Ramsey always says, "Cash is king. True wealth is not about how much a person can borrow, but rather about how much that person has in savings. Credit usually just makes a person a slave to the lender and then you get stuck at a job because you can't quit or risk losing everything. So, I try to pay cash for everything, but it is difficult sometimes in today's society. But it really is better that way because I know where I am at financially at any given time.

Hi, I agree, it is better to use cash at least we know where we stan financially. Or if we use credit card, lets just use it wisely. Thanks

Credit card is very useful when it is used and managed properly. There are a lot of things that credit card may offer to us. And your right, it's still up to the person who is using it. Be responsible, and you have to know your limitations. All I can say is, use credit card wisely and it's really helpful and useful.

yes, I do agree with you. Credit card is useful especially if you dont have cash. But , then you have to be wise spender, because we are responsible for our bills. Always be reminded for our credit limitations.

If you are not a big time spender and not a shopaholic. can control oneself in buying thing then credit card is for you. You just have to 20-30 percent of your credit limit to avoid over spending and then pay on time. Having credit card too lessen the chance of losing money because you will not carry lots of money with you.

Cash or credit is becoming the question. Should everything become electronic? I sometimes wonder just how secure credit cards are, with all the credit card fraud going on. Debit cards I think should be more favored. I believe one day all forency will be turned into some form of electronic system, in the future. The government would love that, they would be able to take our money from us. It is hard to imagine, but bet it happensm

True, its hard to trust nowadays knowing there are a lot of credit card fraud issues.I guess cash is safer and at least you would only spend things that you really need without any monthly bills.

It is easy to have a credit card here, so I have credit cards and I like to use them. I don't like bringing a lot of cash outside, because it is dirty and also dangerous. I like use credit cards to pay. And my bank will give me gifts according to my consuming amount. If it is not necessary, I like to pay by credit card than cash. I love China

Hi, Of course, you can consider to get a credit card for yourself and use it only during emergency period. For me, I do hold a credit card, for me 1 or 2 cards is more than enough and I will use my credit card for top up petrol or some shopping. If the amount of shopping is less, then I prefer to pay by cash. By holding a credit card, I have to control my spending limit. Or else, I may end up with huge amount of credit card debt. And always make a full payment for my credit card bill.

I definitely think a lot of people spend more because they pay with credit cards, it is much easier because you don't actually see how much money you are paying. If you have to part with real cash, it is much harder to do a lot of the time. So credit cards should be used with care. That said, there are some good things about credit cards too. Like, if you buy a trip or airline tickets. If you pay with a credit card then you usually have travelers insurance automatically and for free. And my bank gives me the option to round every purchase up a bit when I pay with my card. So if I buy something for $18, I can round it up to $20 and the extra $2 goes to my savings account. So it makes it much easier for me to save!

Having a credit card is not one of my dream. And it is the same for my partner. If we don't want to carry so much cash money to the shop or supermarket, or wherever we go..then we can always use debit card. Debit card has a same function with credit card ain't it? I don't really want to use credit card because as you mentioned, I may get tempted to purchase an unnecessary thing, and I hate the fact that I will receive one more bill every month. I only want to spend money that I'm sure is what I've earned and is really mine.

Wel l the utility of credit card .... is just not limited to non-availability of cash or emergency situations .... its quite indispensable as far as online transactions are considered ...booking of airline tickets, train tickets bus tickets ...not everything is debit card enabled .... amazon.com , ... any private org which allows online transaction generally first enable credit card transaction and then other form .. If you are comfortable with this then okay ...otherwise i dont think i can survive without my credit card !
