Advanced Vocabulary in Poem Writing

I have read through some poems, and I found out that the vocabulary used by the poets in the poems is essentially high level. Do we really have to use advanced vocabulary to write a good poem? Is good vocabulary counted as one of the beauties of poems? It is good if you guys can give specific examples about it. Thanks a lot.
